Bug#807241: ITP: archlinux-xdg-menu -- Convert freedesktop files to a format used by various WMs

* URL : https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xdg-menu

  Programming Lang: Perl
Description : Convert freedesktop files to a format used by various WMs

xdg-menu generates menus for WMs using the Free Desktop menu standard. You can
install archlinux-xdg-menu from the official repositories.
The following WMs are supported:
twm
ion3
WindowMaker
fvwm2
icewm
blackbox
fluxbox
openbox
awesome
KDE, Gnome, Xfce, Enlightenment are already XDG compatible.

I am considering adding it to the Perl Debian group repository.

Getting hold of the source code takes a bit of hunting down,
but actually it is an Archlinux community project, so there maybe similar
projects.

What archlinux actually stores is the file:
https://www.archlinux.org/packages/community/any/archlinux-xdg-menu/

Clicking on the "Source link" ultimately takes you to the PKGBUILD file:
https://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit/community.git/tree/trunk/PKGBUILD?h=packages/archlinux-xdg-menu

This specifies a location and a current version:
pkgver=0.7.6.2
source=("http://archlinux-stuff.googlecode.com/files/arch-xdg-menu-$pkgver.tar.gz";)

Moreover as I understand it the version of piuparts that runs these
tests is not yet in sid. Surely it is unreasonable to expect people to
fix these bugs - in the middle of a freeze no less - without this tool.

Bug#678460: RFH: maradns -- simple security-focused Domain Name Service server

2012-06-21 Thread Nicholas Bamber
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I request assistance with maintaining the maradns package. The reason is mainly
lack
of time and having someone to talk to about it would add some interest.

The package is in reasonably good shape except that we need to plan a transition
to the 2.0 version (currently in experimental). I had been thinking of working
hard to get a smooth upgrade. I no longer believe this is worthwhile. It just
requires
a new maradns2 package. The duende package can be shared between the two. A
new package
also gives an opportunity to clean up the config.

The package description is:
An easy to configure DNS server that functions as a
recursive and/or authoritative name server. Maradns is
optimised for serving a small number of domains quickly and
efficiently. Well suited to host your own private DNS server
for making up subdomains with minimal fuss. Maradns is
security-aware by utilising a special string library which
is resistant to buffer overflows and mandating to run as an
 unprivileged user.

Here "these scripts" refer to "package maintainer scripts"
({pre, post}{inst,rm}) and not to "init scripts". So there's no
contradiction.

The problem of using "set -e" in init script is even documented
in policy 9.3.2:
http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-opersys.html#s-writing-init

| Be careful of using set -e in init.d scripts. Writing correct init.d

2012-04-11 Thread Nicholas Bamber

thanks

Regarding #621020

"/etc/init.d/mysql uses "set -e" for most of the script, but that is not
compatible with the LSB library /lib/lsb/init-functions. This
particularly causes problems whenever log_end_msg is called with a
nonzero argument, as log_end_msg will return that argument and halt the
script. So there are several chunks of code that will never be called
(some informational messages and the stop-using-kill bit)."

Hmm... This contradicts section 6.1 of the Debian policy.

"The package management system looks at the exit status from these
scripts. It is important that they exit with a non-zero status if there
is an error, so that the package management system can stop its
processing. For shell scripts this means that you almost always need to
use set -e (this is usually true when writing shell scripts, in fact).
It is also important, of course, that they exit with a zero status if
everything went well."

RC4 is a stream cipher designed by Rivest for RSA Data Security (now RSA

operations. The algorithm is based on the use of a random permutation.
Analysis shows that the period of the cipher is overwhelmingly likely to be
greater than 10100. Eight to sixteen machine operations are required per
output byte, and the cipher can be expected to run very quickly in software.
Independent analysts have scrutinized the algorithm and it is considered
secure.

You can either flag methods in your CGI::App subclass with the "Runmode" or
"StartRunmode" attributes or simply declare that every method in a class
is a
run mode. You can also assign a delegate object, all whose methods will
become runmodes. You can also mix both approaches.

The LWP::Protocol::https module provide support for using https schemed URLs
with LWP. LWP::Protocol::https is a plug-in to the LWP protocol handling, so
you don't use it directly. Once the module is installed LWP is able to
access

sites using HTTP over SSL/TLS.

If hostname verification is requested by LWP::UserAgent's ssl_opts, and
neither SSL_ca_file nor SSL_ca_path is set, then SSL_ca_file is implied
to be

the one provided by Mozilla::CA. If the Mozilla::CA module isn't available
SSL requests will fail. Either install this module, set up an alternative
SSL_ca_file or disable hostname verification.

This module used to be bundled with the libwww-perl, but it was unbundled in
v6.02 in order to be able to declare its dependencies properly for the CPAN
tool-chain. Applications that need https support can just declare their
dependency on LWP::Protocol::https and will no longer need to know what
underlying modules to install.

Bug#617974: ITP: libfile-listing-perl -- module to parse directory listings

2011-03-12 Thread Nicholas Bamber

Package: wnpp
Owner: Nicholas Bamber
Severity: wishlist
X-Debbugs-CC: debian-devel@lists.debian.org,debian-p...@lists.debian.org

* Package name: libfile-listing-perl
  Version : 6.00
  Upstream Author : Gisle Aas
* URL : http://search.cpan.org/dist/File-Listing/
* License : Artistic or GPL-1+
  Programming Lang: Perl
Description : module to parse directory listings

File::Listing exports a single function called parse_dir(), which can be
used

to parse directory listings.

The first parameter to parse_dir() is the directory listing to parse. It can
be a scalar, a reference to an array of directory lines or a glob
representing a filehandle to read the directory listing from.

The second parameter is the time zone to use when parsing time stamps in the
listing. If this value is undefined, then the local time zone is assumed.

The third parameter is the type of listing to assume. Currently supported
formats are 'unix', 'apache' and 'dosftp'. The default value 'unix'.
Ideally,

the listing type should be determined automatically.

LWP::MediaTypes provides functions for handling media (also known as MIME)

defined by the media.types file. If the ~/.media.types file exists it is
used

According to #370348, since 5.3 base-files has supported /etc/profile
sourcing /etc/profile.d. I am using version 6.0.

To faciliate this it will use the pkg-components tool and in fact will

Re: Thinking about bundles

2010-09-19 Thread Nicholas Bamber

Raphael,
   Thanks for the feedback.

However I have to say that Debian as a whole cannot have it both
ways. Either ftp-master lifts the restriction on
small modules or there has to be decent support for "components". I have
started work on this
(http://github.com/periapt/pkg-components/blob/master/TODO) though I
have some way to go. (And it is not my highest priority).

Catalyst is not actually the best example in some ways of the utter
horribleness of bundles. It is actually a coherent set of modules even
if they are not distributed that way on CPAN. I prefer CGI::Application
and the current package structure
there is much worse. Development/Debugging tools that one might
reasonably want to keep off a production machine
are mixed in with core modules. In another of the bundles modules are
grouped together that are not even necessarily compatible. For example
no one is going to use both "AnyTemplate" and "TT". So yes if the
ftp-master's restriction is

going to be lifted then fine. The whole business of bundles can die.

However I do not seriously believe that will happen. And if you
actually (clothes peg tightly fastened onto nose)
look into these modules and try to maintain one it gets worse. Having
the tools in Debian but not officially encouraged might be a workable
compromise if it comes to it.

In the article, I mentionned that bundling unrelated software is not a
good idea in general (mainly because there's no common software version to
use).

So I think that we should not create any infrastructure to make it
even easier to create those bundles.

Thinking about bundles

2010-09-09 Thread Nicholas Bamber
I have been looking into the packaging of bundles - that is packages
that have multiple upstream sources. There was recently an article on
the subject:
http://raphaelhertzog.com/2010/09/07/how-to-use-multiple-upstream-tarballs-in-debian-source-packages/
.

However one must notice this quote:
"The supplementary tarball is now part of the source package but we’re
not making anything useful out of it. *We have to modify debian/rules*
... to install the new files in the binary package."

I have recently looked into a number of bundle packages. All of them
have different implementations of the debian/rules although the ones I
looked at had clearly once had a common parent. Hence I have been kept
awake at night thinking how this situation might be improved. The
following proposal draws upon the ideas I have picked up from those bundles.
All those bundles were perl ones though I think I have managed to make
this proposal language neutral.

Proposal: dh_components
Purpose: Support for additional components in debian/rules

To be activated one would need to run "dh --with components $@" and also
there would have to be a "debian/components" directory.

Directory structure

debian/components/ rules
" / " / copyright.in
" / " / [component1] / rules
" / " / " / control
" / " / " / copyright
" / " / " /patches
" / " / " /watch

For each component there would be directory below the debian/components
directory. Files that could be in an individual directory are as follows:

watch: Just the same as a normal watch file.
patches: Just the same as a normal quilt patches directory
copyright: This would not be a full copyright file. It would consist
only of the stanzas relevant to the component.
control: This would be in the same format as the main control file but
would only accept certain fields - namely a long description fragment
and various dependencies such a Depends, Recommends, Suggests, Conflicts
etc. Build dependencies would not be supported as there would be no way
such information could be used.
rules: This would be an executable description described in more detail
later.

Of the above file I think only the copyright and control files would be
mandatory. There would optionally be a rules file at the
debian/components directory.

The '--with' option
===
There would need to be a 'Debian/Debhelper/Sequence/components.pm' the
sole purpose of which would be to install the 'dh_components' hook just
before 'dh_installdocs'.

The 'uscan_components' script
===
This would be a wrapper around uscan. It would iterate through the
components and run 'uscan --watchfile [file]' specifying the components
watch file and passing on any arguments that make sense. It would make
sense to integrate this functionality into uscan, but this script would
be a work around whilst the project is experimental.

The 'dh_components' script
==
This would have three jobs:
* Patching together the copyright file from a template
'debian/components/copyright.in' and the copyright files in the
component directories.
* Patching together various variable substitutions such as
${components:Depends}, ${components:Recommends}, ${components:Conflicts}
and notably ${components:Description} from the component control files.
These should be used in the main debian/control file.
* Running the build process for each component. The build process would
consist of the following phases:

1.) *copy* from the component source directory to a build area
2.) *patch* the source in the build area using the components patches
directory. This includes a link from [component source
copy]/debian/patches to [component patches area] so that the quilt
config which works for the main package should also work for the component.

3.) *configure* the copy in the build area
4.) *build* the source in the build area
5.) *test* the source in the build area
6.) *install* the source from the build area to the package install area
(usually debian/[package]/...).

Exactly how this would work would depend on the combination of the rules
file in the "components" directory and the component "rules" files in
each individual components directory. This would allow some components
to be handled in a standard package wide manner and others to get
special treatment -- possibly only at one build stage. There would also
be arguments to instruct dh_components to only handle certain components
and only certain tasks or build stages. This would be useful in
debugging and managing component patches (see below)

The 'rules' file
=
The 'rules' file must be an executable script. The spec is intended to
make it easily implementable as a make file though this should not be
assumed. It should pick up the component being worked on from the
DH_COMPONENT environment variable and the build stages 1-6 should all be
targets. The rules file is not required to implement all six targets but
it must imple

I don't see how you can really have packages maintained by more than one
person. I reckon the always has to be one person responsible. So I was
wondering exactly what extra privileges those persons would have.

Formally you are right, but I would consider a maintainer as "not really
interested" if he misses the chance to answer this kind of mails.
That's why I come back to my initial proposal: We should try to reach a
state where high popcon packages are maintained by more than one person,
especially if the maintainer does not care about pings like "CCed in
debian-devel mail about problems in his package".

Kind regards

Would appreciate advice on Debian Policy and draft webapp sub policy

2010-07-27 Thread Nicholas Bamber
I am in the process of trying to fix the bugs associated with
w3c-markup-validator. I have hit a particular problem as I look into
#477792.

The package requires a web server with CGI support and support for SSI
includes. The dependencies specify a dependency on "apache2 | httpd".

The latter conjunct makes no sense to me. The httpd virtual package
explicitly does not provide CGI support - one needs httpd-cgi for that.
So lets say I change the dependency to "apache2 | httpd-cgi". I suppose
also the package should be tested against other web servers in httpd-cgi
apart from apache.

Now looking down the list in httpd-cgi 'tntnet' could my eye. Looking at
its description I don't see how it can cope with cgi scripts not written
explicitly for it. So I suspect either its description should be
clarified or it should be removed from the httpd-cgi virtual package.

Now how about the SSI include functionality? I assume (but do not know)
that webservers other than apache2 support SSI. However it seems
unlikely that all the servers do. So I believe that this dependency
should be simplified to "apache2" but leaving the door open to adding
additional conjuncts after suitable testing. Lets say that some how this
was done and actually the dependency is now "apache2 | X".

I am then left with the problem of making sure that the config is
suitably adapted as necessary for webserver X.

Now we come to the nub of the problem. The bug report suggests that the
post install script should run "a2enmod include" (and then bounce the
webserver). I looked for guidence in the policy manuals but could not
find any indication of how to handle dependencies of this sort. Bouncing
the webserver seems a bit drastic in some ways. Maybe the person in
charge might want to install the modules during the day but bounce the
web server late at night. It seems a big step to me for a package to
take this choice away from a the person in charge. Assuming one does
make the post install script work that way, what would the post remove
script do? It cannot blindly run "a2dismod include". The more I think
about this the worse it gets.

I summary:

* I believe the dependency should be tightened from "apache2 || httpd"
to "apache2 || X" (which currently means "apache2").
* I believe that tntnet should be removed from the httpd-cgi virtual
package.
* I believe the w3c-markup-validator source package should generate a
separate deb package for every supported web server.
* What am I suppose to do with dependencies like that on "mod_include"
being enabled?

* Could we have all of this clarified in the draft webapp policy?

Re: How to make Debian more attractive for users

I reckon a forum would be much easier to finance (even with moderators)
than a phone line. It could probably be integrated with one of the
mailing lists which would go a long way to make it look friendlier.

I would have thought that would be really confusing. It sounds like
"what is the purpose of this machine" question you get during
installation. Better would be

stable => solid,

testing => edgy,

unstable => bleeding_edge

That said I think there is noting wrong with the current terms.

Hi all,

and there is another point, I would like to mention.

The naming of the repository is not well chosen, as it let new and
unexperienced people to debian feel a wrong way. The names "stable" "testing"
and "unstable" let the poeople think, debian is using crippled software, which
is unstable, not well tested. In fact, even software from "unstable" is often
running better, than other (including closed source) software.

I suggest for this, to thinlk about other names, for example

- stable = server

- testing = desktop

- unstable = super_modern

Just an example.

Have fun!
