Of course it should; reportbug needs to know who is sending the mail, and the proper place to store that is in the user's home directory. rm ~/.reportbugrc; if you want to test it out. The default if you don't have an MTA configured or know your ISP's relay is to send mail directly to bugs.debian.org, which is perfectly reasonable, provided your ISP doesn't block port 25 outgoing. Using port 587 is more ideal, but that's blocking on #421046, eg: https://rt.debian.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=74 Oh ok thank you, that explains why it didn't work here even with deleting the config files, there is an MTA configured. It is preferable that you do not embed copies of code in your packages, but instead link against packages that already exist in the archive. Please contact us about any missing items you know about. Unfortunately this is not always viable, because in some cases embedded libraries are de facto forks of the original ones, or the program depends on a specific version (and API) of the library. Yes true but in most cases the code base is nearly the same and we can check this without knowing ;) I wonder if in those special cases an Embed: source tag could be added in debian/control to help tracking things. That would be a nice thing, also if this would include information if the code is really included or just statically linked against it. Well, I would consider statically linking a non embedded (i.e. a packaged) library a bug... Are there known cases where this is a required condition? Yes, dpkg for example links statically against libbz2 and zlib just to pick a famous example. Re: Liferea dies with sqlite 3.5
Hi, * Luis Rodrigo Gallardo Cruz [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2007-10-11 11:54]: tag 446050 help thanks The current version of liferea in Debian unstable (1.4.3-1), as well as the latest upstream version (1.4.5) fail if used together with libsqlite3-0 from experimental (3.5.1-1). The program works correctly with the versions in testing and unstable (3.4.2-1, 3.4.2-2). The following error mesage is printed to the console: *** glibc detected *** /usr/bin/liferea-bin: free(): invalid pointer: 0x08514040 *** [...] The reason might be the change in sqlite3_free. In prior versions it did the same like free but now it does some additional mutex stuff for example. Maybe some free needs to be changed to sqlite3_free (you'll see in a backtrace). Re: Debian Packaging Handbook project
Hi, * Davide Truffa [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2007-08-08 06:00]: we are a few wannabe-DD who think it would be really helpful to have a comprehensive packaging manual covering just all technical topics about making and maintaining Debian packages. At this moment, we have the New Maintainers' Guide and a bunch of other more or less good tutorials, anyway when one wants to make an even simple package she/he often have to look at dozens of guides, tutorials, manpages, manuals etc. and not infrequently this will not be enough. So we decided to start a project aimed to collaboratively write a packaging handbook, which should actually cover *almost all* of the information required to create and maintain *most* packages, efficiently using any interesting tool provided by Debian. [...] I don't want to run down this idea but wouldn't the result be nearly the same as the new maintainers guide + developers reference + things you think are missing from the current documentation but can be added? Kind regards Nico -- Nico Golde - http://ngolde.de - [EMAIL PROTECTED] - GPG: 0x73647CFF For security reasons, all text in this mail is double-rot13 encrypted. pgpfQQNH5tGtb.pgp Description: PGP signature

needs=vc as menu field useful and needed?
Hi, I recently stumbled upon the needs=vc field for debian menu files. The menu manual says the following about them: 3. `vc': if it runs under a linux virtual console but not under a X terminal emulator. Currently we have 27 _programs_ using this special field. I asked myself why a user wants to have a program that can't run under no circumstances under X in a menu under X. The packages using needs=vc with debtags information: aatv: Tag: game::toys, hardware::video, implemented-in::c, interface::commandline, interface::text-mode, role::program, scope::utility, use::viewing, works-with::video apple2:Tag: hardware::emulation aumix-gtk: Tag: implemented-in::c, interface::x11, role::program, scope::utility, sound::mixer, uitoolkit::gtk, uitoolkit::ncurses, works-with::audio, x11::application bsdgames: not tagged c3270: Tag: uitoolkit::ncurses cadubi:Tag: use::editing chdrv: Tag: culture::chinese, culture::taiwanese cthugha: Tag: sound::player, uitoolkit::athena, uitoolkit::ncurses dvifb: Tag: interface::framebuffer, role::program, scope::utility, use::viewing, works-with::text, works-with-format::dvi dvisvga: Tag: interface::svga, role::program, scope::utility, use::viewing, works-with::text, works-with-format::dvi fbtv: Tag: interface::framebuffer, role::program, scope::utility, uitoolkit::ncurses, use::viewing, works-with::video fte-console: not tagged heroes-ggi:Tag: game::arcade, interface::x11, role::program, use::gameplaying, x11::application heroes-sdl:Tag: game::arcade, interface::x11, role::program, uitoolkit::sdl, use::gameplaying, x11::application libggi-samples:Tag: devel::examples, devel::library, interface::x11, role::program, scope::utility, uitoolkit::ncurses, x11::library luxman:Tag: game::arcade, interface::svga, interface::x11, role::program, use::gameplaying, x11::application lxdoom-svga: Tag: game::arcade, interface::3d, role::program, use::gameplaying pinball: Tag: game::simulation, implemented-in::c++, interface::x11, role::program, uitoolkit::ncurses, uitoolkit::sdl, use::gameplaying, x11::application prboom:Tag: game::arcade, interface::3d, role::program, uitoolkit::sdl, use::gameplaying, x11::application psmisc:Tag: interface::text-mode, role::program, scope::utility, uitoolkit::ncurses, works-with::software:running sabre: Tag: game::arcade, interface::3d, interface::x11, role::program, uitoolkit::ncurses, use::gameplaying, x11::application scheme48: not tagged svncviewer:Tag: interface::svga, network::client, role::program, use::login, use::viewing synaesthesia: Tag: game::demos, interface::x11, sound::player, uitoolkit::sdl, use::viewing, works-with::audio, x11::application thrust:Tag: game::arcade, interface::svga, junior::arcade, role::program, use::gameplaying When looking at the tags it doesn't look like the programs can't run in an X terminal. I tried worms from bsdgames, cadubi and pinball (randomly picked) and they all worked flawless in my aterm. So even if I missed some packages that really don't run under X, what's the purpose of having them in the user menu and is there really still a need for needs=vc? Should it be removed? Opinions, do I miss something? True. I tried worms from bsdgames, cadubi and pinball (randomly picked) and they all worked flawless in my aterm. I may have had a reason to make worms needs=vc. IIRC it locks up certian dumb terminals due to spewing so much data at the terminal. However my reasons for doing it has been lost in the mists of 1995 and I reverted it. Hehe A lintian test for needs=vc programs that are not linked with svgalib or directfb would be nice. Oh that is a good idea. I will file a wishlist bug. Re: List of (un)sponsored packages on Mentors (approximate)
Hi, * Kumar Appaiah [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2007-07-22 19:26]: (Cross posted to debian-devel, debian-mentors) Dear Debian developers, I have written a few crude and rudimentary scripts to find an approximate list of packages which have been or have _not_ been sponsored despite an RFS to debian-mentors. The program generates bad output if the RFS mailer has not given the package name right after the first RFS in the subject, that too, with a space etc., but it's a start, and gives you the idea. Also, the list is a HTML page, with every package having a link. The link points to the RFS message in the Debian Mentors archive. [...] Thanks for your work! But basically you do work that already had been done by mentors.debian.net. Ok not everyone is using this service but it would be good if they would. I also see a problem in missing descriptions for the RFS. Sure it would be not very efficient to download the message from the archive and parse them but browsing a huge list of non-descriptive names is somehow bad. Hallo Russ, * Russ Allbery [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2007-07-19 20:12]: Nico Golde [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Do we need package descriptions anybody can understand even without knowing anything about the topic or what? I think it's reasonable that if the package short description matches a search for OpenSSH, someone who knows OpenSSH should be able to work out what the package does. Also, the long description should describe what the package *does*, not the possible computer environments where what it does may be useful. My guess is that pssh runs multiple ssh commands in parallel to multiple machines and collects the output in a reasonable fashion. If so, just say so in the long description. Exactly my point! Re: Policy about debian/compat
Hi Bruno * Bruno Costacurta [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2007-07-09 16:53]: what is the policy about file debian/compat ? There is no policy for compat since compat specifies the compatibility level of the debhelper tools and you don't need to build your packages with debhelper. I was not able to find any policy about it in 'Debian Policy Manual' on debian.org. It seems it should contain package version mentionned in field 'Build-depends:' in debian/control for building from source package ? Ie. if my package is build with latest version of dpkg-buildpackage (from package dpkg-dev) I should mention following: 'Build-depends: dpkg-dev' in debian/control ' 1.13.25' in debian/compat I'm correct ? No dpkg-dev is part of the build-essential, see 4.2 in the policy. Re: Suggestion: Set up web pages with as much info about Debian machines as possible
Hi, * e2xbegqsdyt21hfc [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2007-07-01 16:27]: I believe that the Debian project can further help its users by setting web pages with as much details on its servers as possible. In particular, I refer to the contents of the configuration files of the software used by its servers, and their version. This can further help users to have working examples for DNS, MTA, sshd, syslogd, kernel, hardware specs (perhaps taken from /proc and/or boot.log files) and so on. Obviously the network topology can help to clarify the big picture. From the security perspective I guess this absolutly not possible, for the user perspective there are enough examples and documentation flying around in the net for various services.
