  I would call it a bounce.

 I don't. Last time I checked, non-delivery reports aka delivery
 notifications aka bounces aka auto replies should work on the envelope
 only, i.e. send the notification aka bounce to the envelope sender
 address, ideally with an empty return path.

Exactly. That and nothing else is a bounce.

 I think it has something to do with loops, automatic mailers, and not
 parsing the headers as that is a lot more prone to errors.

Yep.

 But this is long ago, think might have changed since.

Nope

Re: Bug#568039: ITP: gatling -- a small, high performance http and ftp server

2010-02-02 Thread Ralf Hildebrandt
* Steve McIntyre st...@einval.com:

 Do we really need another ftp server or another http server? What
 makes this any better than the other alternatives?

* Small! (125k static Linux-x86 binary with HTTP, FTP and SMB support)
* Fast! (measure for yourself, please)
* Scalable! (see this document, measured using tools that are included in the
gatling distribution.
* Uses platform-specific performance and scalability APIs on Linux 2.4, Linux
2.6, NetBSD current (2.0+), FreeBSD 4+, OpenBSD 3.4+, Solaris 9+, AIX 5L, IRIX
6.5+, MacOS X Panther+, HP-UX 11+
* connection keep-alive
* el-cheapo virtual domains (similar to thttpd)
* IPv6 support
* Content-Range
* transparent content negotiation (will serve foo.html.gz if foo.html was asked
for and browser indicates it understands deflate)
* With optional directory index generation
* Will only serve world readable files (so you don't export files accidentally)
* Supports FTP and FTP upload as well (upload only to world writable
directories and the files won't be downloadable unless you chmod a+r them
manually)
* CGI support for HTTP, also SCGI and FastCGI (over IP sockets, not Unix Domain
yet)
* El-cheapo .htaccess support (see README.htaccess)
* Quick-and-dirty SSL/TLS support (see README.tls)
* Can detect some common mime types itself, like file(1)
* Read-only SMB support (good enough to read a specific file from Windows or
using smbclient from Samba)

 Also:

 jack:~$ w3m -dump http://www.fefe.de/gatling
 No such file or directory.

It's http://www.fefe.de/gatling/

 Hello folks,
 i have some trouble about a strange file problem experienced after
 a filesystem [ReiserFS] crash.
 In the /var/run directory I have 3 files (sshd.pid, sudo, motd) that cannot
 be accessed in any way. I try to remove it but rm -f returns a
 permission denied message
 sshd doesn't work but sudo does. The Inode has value 0 in all cases.
 Have you got any ideas?

Have you tried a full filesystem check? Backup your data, such repair
actions sometimes eat your data.

I'd suggest to mail debian-devel to find out a new maintainer as this

And thanks again for all your work!

 Yes, I have. Test was done in a sid chroot that hasn't been updated

 Updating with pdiffs took one minute nine seconds while downloading a
 completely new set of list files took eight seconds.

 Test environment was quite unfair though (an old machine with an 1200
 MHz CPU and a single, slow disk on an 100 MBit link to a rather local
 mirror).

There should be limit on the number of diffs that will be downloaded
before the whole list if used instead.

Re: glibc and PaX issue

2005-09-04 Thread Ralf Hildebrandt
* Grzegorz Bizon [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

 I have few question about PaX from grsecurity and glibc in Debian.
 I have etch, with kernel 2.4.28-grsec (compiled by myself) on my
 machine, and I recently ugraded glibc to 2.3.5-6.
 Suddenly few applications gone insane ;P

Welcome to the club :(

 I tried to google but I didn't find nothing interesting. I think it's
 problem with glibc and PaX from grsecurity patch.

I fell back to a non-grsec-Kernel.

 Installation of ,,fixed packages''[2] soloved this issue. But in my
 opinion better solution is fixing it in Debian :P. It is of course
 possible that I'm wrong and I've missed something (again ...) so,
 please, can somebody explain my what happened ?

I also tinkered with chpax and the like, but couldn't get anything
operational again.

Question regarding offensive material

2005-06-15 Thread Ralf Hildebrandt
I'm asking for guidance regarding this bug:
#313492: xscreensaver/GLSnake has sexually inappropriate imagery

This reminds me all to well of the hot-babe controversity, with the
difference that xscreensaver has been in Debian for ages a nobody ever
complained about that offensive material.

My questions:
=

1) Is it a bug at all?
   There's no technical problem in the program per se. It's just that
   this one person may find it contains sexually inappropriate imagery.

2) Which Severity is fitting (if it is considered a bug)

3) Is there any section in the Debian Policy that addresses these
   social/psycholgical issues? I had a look, but could only find
   issues related to freedom and licenses.

 It's been suggested to rename erect penis into DPL's tentacle.

That sounds good.
What about flaccid penis and vagina?

Re: Question regarding offensive material

2005-06-15 Thread Ralf Hildebrandt
* Steve Langasek [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

 The idea of being sexually offended by a particular configuration of
 simple geometric shapes seems rather bizarre.

Indeed. It's the naming, though!

 Nevertheless, I don't see any reason for the genitalia references here,
 so -- why *not* call the first of these models wizard's staff with a
 knob on the end?

I love that (for obvious reasons).

 GLSnake also seems to make singularly curious use of the word
 flaccid; and none of these models seem to correlate very well with
 the many penises and vaginas that WebCollage has been showing me;

Tits galore, I say!

 so I think it would be best if this package were updated to either
 disable these models by default, or to include better names for them.

I favour the latter idea. jwz will flame me for that.

 Or split the screensaver into GLSnake and (disabled) GLTrouserSnake
 components, I guess...

:)

 Is it a bug? Well, the package does not perform in a way that matches the
 expectations of a large number of users.

Wait! Nobody ever complained, except for that guy. So I guess it must
perform in a way that matches the expectations of a large number of
users!

 Unless you believe it's somehow a *feature* that the GLSnake
 screensaver is unsuitable for these users (while giving no overt
 indication that this is the case), then the other explanation is that
 it's a bug.

  2) Which Severity is fitting (if it is considered a bug)

 Does the severity matter? It should be trivial to fix, should it not?

Indeed.

 I would personally be inclined to treat this as severity: important,
 were it my package; but changing severities is less important than
 fixing bugs.

I have a penis, I'm not offended by it. Neither should you. Anyway,
perhaps it's renaming time.

 than the pictures in any sexual education book). So we have to do
 something about it, because it's a given. I was thinking that maybe
 debtags would provide a solution. You can invent a tag contains remote
 references to natural reproduction and anyone can use that to filter out
 unwanted packages.

Make that contains remote references to natural human reproduction
since the reproduction of amoebas would hardly offend anyone.

 This is the most wise contribution to any recent screensaver discussion in
 Debian! I wholly support this plan, please do.

I must admit, it sounds sane and absolutely solves the puritan problem.

 Since July 2004, I've got no news from Karl and any further attempt to
 get in touch with him has been unsuccessful. Even before this, it
 became quite obvious that the package is not very actively maintained.

Same goes for his xscreensaver package, which is in a pitiful state

 Karl is listed in the MIA lists and it becomes quite obvious that he
 is really MIA. I had exchanges with the MIA lists maintainers about this.

Ah.

 I have announced in many places my intent to take over the package
 development, which I'm in fact doing since mid 2004 (with NMUs).

Would you also take over xscreensaver and maybe let me co-maintain it?

 I'm afraid I have to decline. More packages would be, for me, a bit
 too much and I have no strong motivation for xscreensaver.

Just asking, since somebody would have to do it.

  Tried mozilla recently? It's a thousand times better than Netscape 4.7x

 There are some sites that still require Netscape 4.77. A good example is
 an online banking site here in Belgium, which 'supports' Linux, but you
 need to use Netscape to be able to use that site.

Even if you use konqueror and change the UserAgent it provides?

 You could start by telling us what maildirmake is supposed to do. Why

 procmail or maildrop, and the MUA mutt.

Same for Postfix.
Who needs maildirmake?

   also of generating them. This includes e.g. the exim(4) MTA, MDAs
   like procmail or maildrop, and the MUA mutt.

  Same for Postfix.
  Who needs maildirmake?

 I wonder how all this MTAs and MDAs create shared folders
 automatically ...

In that special case you need maildirmake, but not the simple shell
script, but the version that comes with maildrop.

  Again, if anyone knows of another client that supports both
  requirements I'll give it a go.

 A good mail client that works on Windows, provides IMAP and obeys
 standard headers? I suggest Gnus. It does all that, and more.

Mulberry, but it's not free

  You forget that lex, legis (f.) is well known with lawyers. They'll
  immedialtely recognize it, since so many laws are of roman origin and
  many latin terms occur.

 Are you trying to tell me, that if the list is named debian-lex, more
 people will know what it means, than by naming it debian-law?

 I think i can claim that pretty much all the lawyers that attend the
 list, know english. Atleast enough to know what 'law' means.

Well, med isn't a word at all. At least lex is a word.

  lex is the better word, as it is not only known in English, but also
  in most other (roman) Languages for law.

 Oh right, in finland there is a site finlex.fi, which is ofcouse
 obviously a site that contains the finnish law. This is the first time
 i've even heard the definition for 'lex', i support naming it
 debian-law, so that it's clear for the non-lawyers too.
