it was really a question, not an argument. My personal opinion here is that 
adopting standards enabled by freedesktop.org could be good, because 
upstreams seem to adopt them :)

I lack the technical knowledge about .desktop files and debian menu system 
that could allow me to have a real good opinion on the subject. Hence the 
question : Where are the real differences ?

.destop files advantage(s) :

 - well integrated with upstream desktops
 - i18n enabled
 - supported by freedesktop.org
 - ...

debian menu advantage(s) :

 - well integrated into debian :)
 - ...

Please, fill the blanks :)

The other question is "how hard could it be to adapt menu to desktop files ?".

The silly question is : What does our actual menu system provide that 
shouldn't be achieved by using .desktop file ?
