Hey Joe,

thanks for the hint! Def'ney better look'n'feel - but I still have to
wait 3-4 minutes when ever I want to open an ICS with iceowl from
firefox...

Would love to get rid of this crappy file dialog.

Cheers

Dear Sam,

thank you for your patient and thorough reply.
I added my points to some existing bug reports - I hope
they won't get me wrong.

Well, with KDE, I get a /!\ Warning:
"Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'.
Without the GNOME settings manager running, some preferences may not
take effect. This could indicate a problem with Bonobo, or a non-GNOME
(e.g. KDE) settings manager may already be active and conflicting with
the GNOME settings manager."

Maybe I need to install Gnome Desktop and run this tool from there?
But maybe there is a global option to replace the gtk+ FileChooser by
any other fileselectbox (as known from Atari GEMDOS)...

@Michael: You are possibly right - but:
- Developers tend to know better what component is responsible
- Next to bugzilla, a developer list might be a working option
to reach the GTK+ coders themselves.

Sorry

Annoying GTK2 file dialogue - where to file the BUG?

2008-08-09 Thread Rudi Effe
Dear list,

for some reason, Debian favors Gnome to be the default desktop.
My reason for using KDE is mainly Gnomes file browser. But as a
matter of fact, major applications are using the GTK2 libraries
(Mozilla, Openoffice.org, Gimp, Audacity etc.) - and Opneoffice.org is
the only one that allows to use the KDE file selector.

Now, what's wrong with the GTK2 file chooser? I will report a bug if
anybody could name the package/library I have to refer to.

Look at this screen shot for instance:

http://imagebin.ca/view/wxHN3lH.html

(1) all entries are displayed twice
(2) there is no option to sort by size or to even display size.
maybe this must be enabled by the calling app (audacity here)
- but if this option is not diallowed explicitly, it should be
possible to add it by the browsing user.

(3) whenever I tell Mozilla to open a dialogue with a specific app,
I can (to be quick) enter its path right in the file name box
(say: /usr/bin/ark). Next time however, the file selector will
start browsing that directory (/usr/bin) and produce a hang
lasting at least 4-5 seconds. Suspecting
- missing caching
- slow algorithms
- bad threading

(4) missing eyecandiness: grey and simple icons, no rounded corners,
dominating dark grey, low percentage of area used for content/
information (too much frame).

Sorry, don't get me wrong - I just wanted to share my personal
impression of this fun stopper - it's like a hair in a five star soup!

Regards
Rudi

Bug Squashing Party: Priority queue?

2006-08-11 Thread Rudi Effe
Dear dd's,

I just found an invitation for a debian-edu bug squashing party at
central Germany [1]. As this is quite a distance from where I live, I
probably won't make it myself - but will try to join the team via IRC
(#debian-edu). Now I wonder, if there is more folks around who might be
joining, and (most important), if we have a list of topmost relevant
bugs to fix?

These are the ressources I'd go for in the first place:

http://bugs.debian.org
http://bugs.skolelinux.no
http://wiki.debian.org

Thanks
Rudi

Dear Joseph,

happy new year to you all. In this matter, I'd like to stress the
importance to gain the youth, i.e. pupils, for free software, i.e.
GNU/Linux. I plea to support all Edu-Projects (KDE-Edu, Debian-Edu
etc.), therefore. Spread kid-friendly live CDs to your environment (I
can recommend http://www.skolelinux.no/~conrad/snofrix.html), ask your
local school to use free software, develop artwork and software for
pupils and kids.

That's my 2 pence for now.

How about a software application of what many hardware "PC guards" (and
likewise) do:

Use unionfs as a layer that you put away at any reboot to obtain the
original system.

Maybe "slagging off" is not the right expression. Apart from the last
sentence that I don't really understand (as non-native speaker), I
could imagine that Anand was annoyed about his comments on Ubuntu that
expressed the fear that the project might fork...

the unfree packages have been renamed to unrar-nonfree. the unrar
package in main is free - but does not support some current rar
features.

Hi Timothy again,

how's your work proceeded, meanwhile?
Thanks again for your valuable comments, I think it is really important
to tell pupils, it is not "Linux" to blame when, say, KDE's kicker
crashes. [No, don't start defending - I am talking bout KDE 2.x :) ]

BTW: Connected to this thread, there was some "Linux New Media Award"
for a debian based Linux distro called "Skolelinux" that specializes to
schools' needs AFAIK.

Educational Debian packages named preinstalled are gcompris, kmplot,
tuxtype, kgeo, ...

So, apparantly, there are already many developers thinking of the
generation to follow - which is just great :)
