As Jacob said, what you have isn't really RAID. It's software RAID
(meaning, all the work is done on the host CPU, not on the IDE chip),
which loads a BIOS extension so that it works automatically in MS-DOS
and derivatives. The Windows driver is also software RAID. If you
paid extra money for the "RAID" feature, someone cheated you. :(

See http://linux.yyz.us/sata/faq-sata-raid.html for more information.

Unless you need to access the same RAID configuration between Linux and
some other OS, like Windows XP, you are best off ignoring the "RAID"
features and running the card purely as an IDE controller. (You can
set up native Linux software RAID, same as you would with any other set
of IDE disks.)

If you *do* need to share a RAID partition with a legacy OS, see
questions 8 and 9 on the web page above. As far as I know, Debian
doesn't have tools packaged for either solution mentioned.

What motherboards call RAID is really a tricky way to make Windows see
and use software RAID. You will probably want to Google about "software
raid" in Linux for more info. I'm sure there's a couple tutorials about
it out there.

Jacob

That "RAID" isn't. What you see is correct.

Little help about Intel865PERLL with ICH5

2005-04-29 Thread Ivan Adams
Hi,
I have Intel865PERLL with ICH5 and I need to make SATA RAID to work. I
have made the Enhanced Mode in Raid BIOS, but no one (debian) kernel
didn't saw it property. Even now I am with Knoppix 3.8 and it saw it
wrong. I have Debian Sid cd1 and Debian Sarge cd1 and Debian Sarge
Netinstall and also Debian Stable (7 discs).

Can someone help me howto make it work.
Here something from my logs:

Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
