I am but a humble physics student ( ;-) ) who wants to package a few science things for his own personal and political reasons. I don't have time to be a powerful maintainer, and don't want to get any ego tied up in it. (and I've only been here 8 months) I had to toe the line on Christian's opinion on some docs. A lot of us are willing to do that because we appreciate the magnitude of the work of some of the key players. I hope Ch. is not leaving because of losing one battle (maybe its more). ( I am not taking sides on the number-of-maintainers-per-package issue, or on the how-to-challenge-policy-issue. Those folks may have taken reasonable positions. ) John Lapeyre [EMAIL PROTECTED] Tucson,AZ http://www.physics.arizona.edu/~lapeyre -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Therefore, I've decided to leave the Debian project. Sorry to see you leave. I must admit, I've been entirely negligent in following the policy discussions - due to lack of time, I've skipped them entirely. Instead, I've been relying on you to form a consensus and write them up into official policy. I suspect that most of the other older maintainers are the same way - they've skipped the policy discussions altogether - which would explain your perceived lack of support. I discovered about a year ago that the policy discussions are very draining and mostly negative, and seldom go anywhere. The only people who get anything accomplished in Debian are the people who actually do packaging and coding (although having a policy editor role is still important). I don't know how you held out for so long. Perhaps, instead of leaving Debian completely, try this -- just resign as the Policy guy first, and continue as a regular developer. I think you'll find it to be much more relaxed and enjoyable. This project is infamous for letting people burn out unnecessarily. Cheers, - Jim pgprDA7ghvuct.pgp Description: PGP signature

Christian Schwarz [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: PS: The Linux community will not lose me! I'm planning to join Bruce' effort to set up a new base distribution. If Debian should decide to support the new base distribution, too, perhaps I could act as person of contact for Debian. You should also keep your eye on the Red Hat Contrib Net (RHCN): ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/rhcn/charter which shows some promise. Red Hat is trying to set up a contrib system with signed packages, quality control, designated developers, etc. If it takes off, it would be promising source of non-base packages for both Bruce's project and Red Hat Linux. Most of their policy hasn't been set yet to the detail that Debian's is, other than a statement that maintainers have to be responsible for bugs and are responsible for arranging that their packages are available on as many platforms as possible. I've encouraged them to look at Ian's bug tracking system, which I feel would be well suited for a project like that.
