Ill-informed? How about poorly documented task proposals
which did not reflect reality? the changelog entry was taken straignt
out of the task porposal as presented to the policy group; and since
there has been no mention in the last few months in debian-devel, is
it surprising that I assumed that the proposers of tasksel knew what
they were talking about the proposal.

This is a seemingly ill-informed changelog entry, and not Policy, FWIW.

Hmm. According to the latest policy the Task: method should be used
which I think is not the best thing...

From the changelog of Debian policy package:

debian-policy (3.5.7.0) unstable; urgency=low

special field in the control file (and these should be added only

I guess the policy document describes how this is to be done _now_.
(That is after woody ;)
Whereas the override file was they way this was handled for woody.

Maybe ask on debian-policy on this issue?

Greetings,
Erich

No, that's not how it works. File a bug against tasksel if you are not
seeing the spanish task, which it already has.

Try running 'dselect update' first though.

Not very clear, I must admit. I modify this particular override file if I
want to add packages to a task for custom CDs. A new task could be
created the same way, but I am not certain if this canonical.

The info for the Tasks is in debian/indices/override.woody.extra.main.gz
if you want to have a look. debian-cd then adds this info to the Packages
file.

uhm, they should _not_ be added to the control file. They should be
added by the override files plucked from base-config's CVS. Skim the

Thanks. Then is everyone ok if I include (or submit bug against the packages
that
don't) Task: spanish to the control files for

doc-linux-es
doc-debian-es
debrecipes-es
apt-howto-es
user-es
aspell-es
ispanish
wspanish
language-env
manpages-es
manpages-es-extra
wordtrans
i2e (should be superceeded by wordrtans for next release)
ayuda
xfonts-intl-european

Ummm... wait a minute... some of these already are in tasksel!
It seems that the following are:
 wspanish
 ispanish
 doc-linux-es
 manpages-es
 user-es

However, when I installed with some brand-new woody CDs the 'Spanish' task
would not show up... I will try to dig this bug out.

In any case... anybody against broadening the Task package? It's just to make it
similar to task-german, task-french et al..

Regards

Javi

See debian-policy...

Excerpt from the changelog:
  * we no longer have task packages, instead, we define tasks using a
special field in the control file (and these should be added only
after discussion on the mailing lists) closes: Bug#97755

Where are tasks now and how are they handled? (Woody sucks because there is no Task: Spanish)

2002-09-02 Thread Javier Fernández-Sanguino Peña
(I have skimmed this year's debian-devel-announce as well as the developer's
policy and haven't found this explained)

One simple question: how are tasks managed? what policy is there for
creation/addition of packages to it?

Aj[1] seems to say that this is managed by override files. But I wonder if
whomever
did this checked if the changes were made properly. Why do I know?

1.- Because 'tasksel' does not show up any "Task: Spanish" when in fact there
was
one in potato.

2.- Because this seems to be a consequence of *no* packages having "Task:
spanish"

Should I have done something (as maintainer of the task-spanish package), how
can
we fix this? could it be fixed for woody r1 ??

Regards

Javi
