If you are still asking about getting this package into bullseye then I'm
afraid it's not possible. Otherwise, as already suggested, it's possible
to have it in bullseye-backports after fixing problems keeping it outside
testing.

Thats not the point.

The point is, how can we make sure that freeipa-client stays in Testing
for Bookworm, even if there is a fatal problem with freeipa-server?

I'm not going to do that anymore, but instead backport once the blocker
is fixed.

Please file a bugreport against freeipa, suggesting to split into two
source packages, one for server and one for client.

Maybe the maintainers will agree that it is a sensible move, but maybe
they will disagree that other concerns (e.g. simplicity of maintenance)
overweighs the risk of the package not stabilizing.

It really isn't sensible to discuss this among all Debian developers:
It's very much tied to the maintenance of that specific package.

Kind regards, and thanks for caring about Debian,

 - Jonas

You should have expressed it more clearly then.

Make it a separate source package, if it's possible to do a clean split.
Make sure the server package neither build-depends nor depends on the
client one.
The only sane way to do this is at the upstream side though.

FWIW, my suggestion would be to attempt to work with the Debian
FreeIPA team (there is a release critical bug open since September
2020, so it's unclear how active the team is currently) to get the
package healthy, and after Bullseye releases, work to get it into
testing, and then into Bullseye-backports.

Cheers,

- Ted

The freeipa source package is not in testing since 2019-10-07, so "at risk
for the next release" is an understatement.

freeipa is in trouble for the next release (again)

2021-03-24 Thread Harald Dunkel

Hi folks,

I understand that freeipa-server has a very serious problem (#970880),
making it unfit for Bullseye. It is *highly* painful that it puts
freeipa-client at risk for the next release, too. We had something
similar for Buster about 2 years ago, AFAIR.

For my own part, I run freeipa-server on CentOS 7. I am not affected
by #970880. I would be very happy with freeipa-client in Bullseye, even
if freeipa-server doesn't make it.

Do you think it would be possible to cut a clear line between freeipa-
client and -server?

Regards
Harri
