Package: dpkg-dev
Version: 1.10.21
Severity: wishlist
File: /usr/bin/dpkg-source

dpkg-source does the right thing when unpacking a source package. But
there are situations, where you already have the source package
unpacked, and would like to see the original package again. Using
dpkg-source again would result in the already unpacked tree being
influenced.

It would, IMO, be a good idea to have an option that can control the
output directory. "dpkg-source -x foo.dsc -o foo-old" would unpack
into foo-old instead of foo-version.

Greetings
Marc

Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
X-Debian-Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII

Package: dpkg-dev
Version: 1.4.0.22

My intention was to extract a source, mv the DIR to DIR.orig, extract
the source again, make some modifications inside DIR and then do a recursive
diff from DIR.orig to DIR by hand.

Well, dpkg-source did not let me to do that.

I dowloaded the source of gzip (as an example) and I did the following:

$ dpkg-source -x gzip_1.2.4-26.dsc
dpkg-source: extracting gzip in gzip-1.2.4
$ mv gzip-1.2.4 gzip-1.2.4.orig
$ dpkg-source -x gzip-1.2.4
dpkg-source: extracting gzip in gzip-1.2.4

At this point, the gzip-1.2.4.orig directory dissapeared.
This should not have happened, or there should be an option
to override it, since dpkg-source obviously can do its things
in whatever temporary directory to extract the sources properly.

Thanks.

Package: dpkg-dev
Version: 1.10.25
Severity: wishlist
File: /usr/bin/dpkg-source

Hi,

please consider adding a possibility to tell dpkg-source where to
unpack the package. Currently, dpkg-source insists on choosing the
directory name itself, which is bad if you want to unpack a source
already unpacked and modified for comparision purposes. Additionally,
it might be desireable to have a script _know_ where a source package
is being unpacked without sedding the .dsc file and/or parsing
dpkg-source's standard output.

I think that simply modifying dpkg-source's semantics so that

dpkg-source -x .dscfile targetdir

would unpack into targetdir won't break any backwards compatibility.

Optionally, if targetdir is specified and already exists, dpkg-source
should refuse to do the unpack and return an error.

Greetings
Marc

hi,

at http://selinux.lemuria.org/newselinux/ some patches can be found
which are to communicate with an SELinux enabled/compiled kernel.

the patch to dpkg is to do some pre-running and post-running.

i don't know if this is already done, but it is necessary with
selinux, after a package is installed, to run EXACTLY the same
stuff to plop some security permissions on top of the package files.

zero modifications are at this time required to each package installed.

hope this can be accepted.

Hi,

I have created a small (68 lines addition in lib/star.c) patch
for SELinux support in dpkg. This is against the version pulled from
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]/dpkg--devel--1.13--patch-137. Adding in
changes to configure, Makefile.am's for the binaries, ChangeLog, and
./debian/changelog, we have 188 lines of addtions, 7 deletions over
10 files (the bulk being 68 lines of code change and 30 lines of
 ChangeLog).

There is no change in the generated binaries unless configure
is called with the --enable-selinux option, and then no change in
behaviour on a non-selinux system. You can browse the branch at:
 http://www.golden-gryphon.com/cgi-bin/archzoom.cgi/[EMAIL
PROTECTED]/dpkg--selinux?expand?

I have tested the build on SELinux UMLs, and on non-selinux machines.

 Pre-build binaries are available from

 deb http://people.debian.org/~srivasta/ packages/
 deb-src http://people.debian.org/~srivasta/ packages/source/

 Thanks,

 manoj

Copy the available-old file over available, if that isn't corrupted --
otherwise empty the available file and use "dselect update" to update it
again.

looks like we're changing this variable anyway, substituting linux by
linux-gnu. There are some packages, for which the change from i386 to
i486 makes a difference, and we're not targeting i386 anymore.

We had some fun with dpkg-architecture in Ubuntu this morning ...

09:12 * \sh checks why breezy morphes into hurd
09:12 < \sh> -rw-r--r-- 1 shermann shermann 2688 May 18 08:08

09:12 < \sh> -rw-r--r-- 1 shermann shermann 2154 May 18 08:08
libqssl2_2.0-1ubuntu1_hurd-i386.deb

09:31 < Kamion> \sh: try 'dpkg-architecture -qDEB_HOST_ARCH'?
09:31 < \sh> hmm
09:31 < \sh> hurd-i386 *g*

Turns out that dpkg-architecture iterates through cputable and ostable
in whatever order the regexes happen to come out of the %cputable_re and
%ostable_re hashes. In practice the first one is always /gnu[^-]*/, and
since the first gcc-4.0 upload to Ubuntu after we synced dpkg_1.13.4
picked up the change to DEB_HOST_GNU_TYPE and started to spit out
*-linux-gnu in 'gcc -dumpmachine', /gnu[^-]*/ always matches on Linux.

I fixed this using the following patch (I can't seem to get to your arch
archive right now):

cputable probably didn't need to be changed since it's fully anchored,
unlike ostable which is only partially anchored, but I did it anyway for
symmetry.

However, you should probably also reorder ostable so that the least
specific regexes are last, otherwise this will cause dpkg-architecture
to think that both KFreeBSD and KNetBSD are the Hurd. Moving hurd after

- Change DEB_*_GNU_CPU from i386 to i486, to reflect reality.
DEB_*_ARCH_CPU remains at i386, you should be checking against that.

Package: dpkg
Version: 1.10.28
Severity: normal

I was told that "dpkg --purge foo" should be able to purge the
remaining configurationsfiles etc from the (removed, uninstalled but
nor purged) package foo. It does not do that, so is it a bug, or is it
no supposed to work?

  # dpkg -l | grep ^rc.*cupsy
  rc libcupsys2 1.1.20final+cv Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - libs
  # dpkg --purge libcupcsys2
dpkg - warning: ignoring request to remove libcupcsys2 which isn't installed.
  # dpkg -l | grep ^rc.*cupsy
  rc libcupsys2 1.1.20final+cv Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - libs

I must say that the man page really does not hint about it. But I read
it somewhere, and judging from the remaining stuff /var/lib/dpkg/foo.*
it should be possible. I would be happy if it worked!
