Well, I thought it *was* team maintained, which made Torsten's comment that
you wanted to take it over rather surprising to me given that I haven't
seen you post to the alioth list about it...

The Uploaders entry in openldap currently states that on that team are
Stephen Frost, Roland Bauerschmidt, you and myself. As far as I know
Roland and Stephen both have no time to commit to OpenLDAP and IIRC you
only wanted to help out for the release.

That doesn't mean that I shouldn't take action. ;)

Most of the mail I send was off list and not to bug #340349. Well,
that's my mistake.

My memory might not be correct. Anyway, it was a mistake to post to
debian-devel and not to pkg-openldap-devel. I did not think about it,
 sorry.

 Greetings

   Torsten

Until now I see two people that are willing to maintain OpenLDAP, Russ
Allbery and me. And Torsten is eventually willing to upload it to the
Debian archive.

Ok, what I wanted done for this package is:
- - Move to a patch system like dpatch or quilt
- - Move to dh_install instead of copying around files.
- - Understand how the maintainer scripts work in detail.
- - GnuTLS patch for the 2.3.* version. (And make the patch generic so
that newer versions of OpenLDAP doesn't require a large modification to
the patch)

There is probably more that needs to be done, but I can't remember
myself more, so please add to the TODO list. :)

I moved already to the dpatch system (I am pretty familiar with it, but
if quilt is preferred please say so), I have made a start with the move
to dh_install.

I will commit my changes later today.

Matthijs Mohlmann

Chances are great, especially if those doing the Skolelinux-specific

hand them the hacks, as they seem to have plenty to do already).

I think if a software will be used mainly with skolelinux the field
should be something like Debian-Edu team as italc :
 Maintainer: Debian Edu Developers debian-edu@lists.debian.org

What makes sense to me is that the developers growing an expertise in
slicing Debian into the sub-parts distributed as Skolelinux focus on
the knowledge specific to that slicing.

I don't think it makes sense to bother *all* those same folks with C++
transitions, Python policy changes, different version control systems,
and and..., just because the software has an educational use.

Those interested in both infrastructural development of a CDD and
specific packaging of an educational piece of software can simply join
both teams - but when mixing then you make it more complex to join and
help out.

But if it is a software which will be used both in Debian and
Debian-edu and moreover if it's a small package, only one person
 should be in this field.

There's nothing wrong in teams with only a sinlge person. The
difference between single-person teams and personal maintainance is the
difficulty for person number two to join later on.

I did not wonder about the historcial facts of the relationship with the

I wondered if it wouldn't make more sense to move to a
team-maintainance of its own (or perhaps together with a group of
related packages - related in developer skills and technical interests
rather than related in target user groups).

The best way is to have all packages in Debian, but as I know we have
packages in skolelinux that aren't now in Debian. So we have Debian and
Debian-Edu maintainer.
In the future, I hope every package will be in Debian :)

I think if a software will be used mainly with skolelinux the field

Hmm, you are right, it's more complex to help but for big packages, we
need to have more than 1 or 2 person to help, package, upgrade...

But if it is a software which will be used both in Debian and
Debian-edu and moreover if it's a small package, only one person
  should be in this field.

There's nothing wrong in teams with only a sinlge person. The

that's true. I know that some DD are working on to facilitate to maintain
packages with more than 1 person and moreover they are working for
enable non-DD to have a branch and could maintain software because some
people have asked to maintain packages and they don't want to become DD.
That's a real problem.

Now the best and so the easier way is to have a single-person to
maintain a package.

Friendly,

Upstream is working on official support for GnuTLS, which should make the
last point much easier when complete. I'm not sure what their timeframe
is, though.

I'm going to be a little busy with other projects through the end of the
year, but I'm willing to do bug triage and similar work on the package, as
well as do uploads if other people are busy. My co-worker, Quanah
Gibson-Mount, is one of the OpenLDAP upstream developers and wants to
learn how to do Debian packaging, so after the start of the year I'm going
to work with him on that and see if he's also interested in helping with
this package.

If someone could add me to the OpenLDAP project in Alioth, that would be
great. Thanks!
