I have been added to pkg-java project recently and I am still working on getting a package, that I updated in Ubuntu, adopted in Debian. Which is A Good Thing(tm) in my opinion. So please go ahead and package this nice piece yourself, when you feel you can "carry the burden". Suggestion: File an ITP now, but declare in it that you are fine if others take over the packaging or working together in this or that team (or whatever you're fine with).
