Downloading and install netqmail-1.04 (which incorporates this patch)
solved my qmail problems, only VMWare is still affected. Petr
Vandrovec's solution:

mv /usr/bin/vmnet-natd /usr/bin/vmnet-natd.bin

and create /usr/bin/vmnet-natd:

#!/bin/sh
LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 exec /usr/bin/vmnet-natd.bin "$@"

Phew, another glibc update has failed to bring down my system :-)

Thanks,
Jurriaan

Hi debian-amd64 guys,

We're encountering #218657. This bug says many programs become
unusable when libc6 2.3.2.ds1-8 + kernel 2.6 is used on amd64
architecture. We all debian-glibc developers can't access such
machine, so could anyone try to reproduce and track this problem?

(I resend this mail because the past one was not reached to debian-amd64)

Bug#219025: update

2003-11-06 Thread debbugreport
Ok, I have this working now.

I figured out that I needed to download the files for i686 from here:

http://ftp.debian.org/pool/main/g/glibc/

Note that when I checked previously the i686 files were not there - only the
ia64 and hppa etc.

Anyway, I then ran

dpkg - i each_of_the_deb_files

and it now works a treat.I can continue to use apt-get and update latest
files.

Many thanks for resolving the problem guys.

What not rename linux-kernel-headers to simple system-headers-linux?
This will prevent confused users (or: lazy to read the description users)

Bug#219459: NPTL breaks abort()

That just means GDB can't backtrace through abort. The compiler knows
that abort is a noreturn function, and is allowed to take all sorts of
liberties with the calling sequence - there's very little the debugger
can do.

You won't be able to get a backtrace at least until GDB and your kernel
agree on how to dump the sysinfo DSO to a core dump and how to parse
it. The code's still being worked on.

Because that dependency has repeatedly been demonstrated to be
necessary, and when we leave it out we get bug reports that people's
locales don't work?

Always the same answer... Instead of telling "use at your own risk",
shouldn't we simply try to solve known problems?

There are some good reasons I'm forced to run Debian unstable, believe
me. Why should I (and potentially many others) be annoyed by things
that seem to be easily be avoidable with a little more fine-grained

Sorry, I mailed that to you because I'm not a debian developper

If you don't want this to happen, use testing rather than unstable. It's
designed to insulate you from (most of) these kinds of problems.

Bug#204789: [Gcl-devel] Re: ia64 function descriptors and unexec

2003-11-06 Thread Camm Maguire
Greetings, and thank you again for your vital feedback. The solution
I've just implemented would have been impossible without it.

I'm pleased to announce a just-committed resolution to this issue,
bringing stability to gcl/maxima/acl2/axiom on ia64 and any future
platform like it which may use dynamic function descriptors. (I've
heard hpux and ppc64 are in the same category already).

There is now a #define switch STATIC_FUNCTION_POINTERS which will
ensure that all C defined functions installed into lisp as pointers
are static. We were *very* fortunate that compiled lisp code did not
have to be changed at all -- only the files in the o/ subdirectory, by
in large.

I'm uploading new .debs for 2.6.1 and cvs which will close the two
bug reports pertinent to this issue.

Take care,

If you don't want this to happen, use testing rather than unstable. It's
designed to insulate you from (most of) these kinds of problems.

Take care,

This issue has been noticed and discussed here:

(a bug had been filed for the kscd application).

There is no bug in the kernel headers. Undefining __STRICT_ANSI__ is a
terribly bad thing to do. Fix this by adding a #define inline __inline__
below the #define asm __asm__, I suppose.

The concerned piece of code from plat_linux.c:

/* needed for vanilla kernel headers, which do provide __u64 only
   for ansi */
#undef __STRICT_ANSI__
/* needed for non-ansi kernel headers */
#define asm __asm__

mktime patch when ?

2003-11-06 Thread Sven Goldt
Hello,

today i installed the testing deb package of glibc (2.3.2-9)
and the mktime patch
http://savannah.gnu.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs/gnulib/gnulib/lib/mktime.c.diff?r1=1.35&r2=1.36
is still not installed.
Now mktime will still not work for dates < 1.1.1970.
Could you please apply the patch in the next release of libc6 ?
Obviously SuSe 9.0 has the patch installed in their libc6.

Thanks,
Sven Goldt

I've downloaded the latest 1.3 JRE from IBM, and it still segfaults at
JVM startup. It works fine with libc6 2.3.2-9, it crashes with
2.3.2.ds1-9.

VM Version:
Classic VM (build 1.3.1, J2RE 1.3.1 IBM build cxia32131-20030618 (JIT
enabled: jitc))

And stack trace:

I've found some reports that this JVM also crashes on RedHat 9 with the
same stacktrace. It does tell a workaround with LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5,
which forces glibc to use the old pthreads instead of NPTL.
http://www.mainframeforum.com/t584476.html

This workaround doesn't work on my debian, though :-)

Actually, the IBM java startup scripts _do_ contain code that sets
LD_ASSUME_KERNEL. It just doesn't work for us.

Bug#219025: acknowledged by developer (Bug#219025: fixed in glibc 2.3.2.ds1-10)

2003-11-06 Thread debbugreport
Please excuse my ignorance, but how do I install this update?

I can't install or remove anything using apt-get due to libc6 failing on the
ldconfig fault. Do I just need to do apt-get update & dist-upgrade but first
modify the sources.list to pick the new files up?

Do I just download the deb file and run dpkg -i debfile? Which deb file do I
need to download and where would it be located?

uname -a
Linux . 2.2.20-idepci #1 Sat Apr 20 12:45:19 EST 2002 i686 GNU/Linux

Cheers.

Bug#219356: I also think libc6-i586 would be useful

Ah, so the main libc6 packages already have NPTL? I don't need to
install libc6-i686 to get NPTL? Cool (you should make that more obvious
in the package description for libc6-i686, that you do not need it for
NPTL).
