Bug#258789: locales should be set up in init scripts instead of /etc/environment

2004-07-14 Thread Florian Effenberger
Okay, I see this seems to be a lot of work to do. However, I'm not that
skilled to do this at the moment, so I prefer to wait until someone else
picks up my idea.

OK, I put into libc-udeb.install:

debian/tmp-libc/lib/libutil* lib

It will be in 2.3.2.ds1-14.

Oh boy, did you even try to write /etc/init.d/locale?

In first, you need to consider about pam_env. Then, you need to
consider about the merit and the demerit when we transit to your
framework. Plus, you should discuss about this issue in
debian-devel@lists.debian.org before we introduce your framework
because someone may not want to use your idea. You need to check
which script uses /etc/environment. In addition, you should write
/etc/init.d/locale.

It seems you throw away these works to us. I concern this
modification affects a bad impact to the system.

OK, I put into libc-udeb.install:

debian/tmp-libc/lib/libutil* lib

It will be in 2.3.2.ds1-14.

Oh boy, did you even try to write /etc/init.d/locale?

In first, you need to consider about pam_env. Then, you need to
consider about the merit and the demerit when we transit to your
framework. Plus, you should discuss about this issue in
[EMAIL PROTECTED] before we introduce your framework
because someone may not want to use your idea. You need to check
which script uses /etc/environment. In addition, you should write
/etc/init.d/locale.

It seems you throw away these works to us. I concern this
modification affects a bad impact to the system.

We don't put libc6-udeb on floppies, or indeed on any initrd images;
it's only ever retrieved from the CD or the network. Size constraints
aren't a big deal in this case.

The locales should be set up in init scripts instead of
/etc/environment. Then the locale would be active for every user, not
just for users logging in. This is especially useful for CGI or PHP
scripts that would otherwise not use the locale.
