2023-05-27 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Hello tzdata maintainers,
a week ago I provided the update for the German Debconf translation.

Since we are now in hard freeze and the release quickly approaching,
could you kindly upload this translation so that it reaches bookworm?

I'm pretty sure release managers will accept this small but important
change (one string in de.po only).

If you need help, please let me know.

Thanks!

Greetings

Bug#1026321: locales: Issues in Debians locales man pages

2022-12-18 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Package: locales
Version: 2.36-6
Severity: minor

Dear locales maintainer,
the manpage-l10n project maintains a large number of translations of
man pages both from a large variety of sources (including Locales) as
well for a large variety of target languages.

During their work translators notice different possible issues in the
original (english) man pages. Sometimes this is a straightforward
typo, sometimes a hard to read sentence, sometimes this is a
convention not held up and sometimes we simply do not understand the
original.

We use several distributions as sources and update regularly (at
least every 2 month). This means we are fairly recent (some
distributions like archlinux also update frequently) but might miss
the latest upstream version once in a while, so the error might be
already fixed. We apologize and ask you to close the issue immediately
if this should be the case, but given the huge volume of projects and
the very limited number of volunteers we are not able to double check
each and every issue.

Secondly we translators see the manpages in the neutral po format,
i.e. converted and harmonized, but not the original source (be it man,
groff, xml or other). So we cannot provide a true patch (where
possible), but only an approximation which you need to convert into
your source format.

Finally the issues I'm reporting have accumulated over time and are
not always discovered by me, so sometimes my description of the
problem my be a bit limited - do not hesitate to ask so we can clarify
them.

I'm now reporting the errors for your project. If future reports
should use another channel, please let me know.

Re: Processed: Re: Bug#964477: libc6-dev: Fails to cleanly upgrade from Stable

2020-07-25 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Hello all,
I resolved the breakage by "apt-get remove libgcc-8-dev".

This removed noting central to me and allowed the subsequent
"dist-ugprade" to complete.

In the dist-ugprade I noticed two things:
a) All Debconf questions were asked in english, although they should
be available in my default locale, i.e. de

b) The "dist-upgrade" initially failed:

Ok, then this is not another local problem.

However, it does not help. Installing gcc brings in a few packages but
then dist-upgrade fails again the same way. g++ is already at the
latest version.

I reassign this bug to apt as suggested.

Thanks for your support.

Who would be the best party to fix this? (Sorry, at the moment I don't
have a clue what causes this problem).

I did an upgrade today (dist-upgrade is still broken) and for some
strange reason I cannot install gcc-defaults:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package gcc-defaults

I also get this in an current (unrelated) sid chroot. Strange.

Any help much appreciated (or pointers).

2020-07-07 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Package: libc6-dev
Version: 2.28-10

Until a few hours ago I run stable. Switching sources to testing and
then
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

worked. Now:

apt-get dist-ugprade tells me the following:

root@samd:~# LC_ALL=C apt-get dist-upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Calculating upgrade... Error!
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 libc6-dev : Breaks: libgcc-8-dev (< 8.4.0-2~) but 8.3.0-6 is to be installed
E: Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by
held packages.

If I try to remove either libc6-dev or libgcc-8-dev then a long list of
programms is scheduled for deinstallation, e.g. lots of KDE, okular,
libreoffice etc.

roundabout 7 weeks ago the debconf update was provided. As the hard
freeze is approaching, do you think it is possible to perform another
uplaod (with the translations in #920427, #920598, #923061) in the
next days to ensure propagation to Testing in time?

Thanks!

Greetings

This is my built sid chroot, where I'm not tuning anything. I definitly
did not touch this file.

If it is unreproducible then I can simply fix up the line and you can
close the bug. If you need further information / debugging simply let
me know.

Oh, I see what you mean. The change was a pure english one - it did
not affect the translation. Therefore the correct action (which could
have been done by you as maintainers as well) was to simply remove the
"fuzzy" marker. The change *is* user visible, however. With the fuzzy
marker, the english string is shown, without the translated (German)
one.

Fixing fuzzy strings (i.e. they are not fuzzy anymore) recompletes the
German translation. I just checked, everything looks fine. Or are
there some other issues (e.g. new strings I missed) which you want to
point out?

Thanks again for including the update before stable.

Bug#555168: Unclear license situation for (e)glibc locales provided by you

2012-07-13 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Hello Keld,
I was told that this e-mail address is the successor to the (no longer
working) one keld.simon...@dkuug.dk. If that is not the case please
accept my apologizes (and maybe you know the correct current contact
details in that case?).

You are listed as contact person/author of the following locales:
da_DK de_BE de_CH de_LU el_GR en_AU en_CA en_DK en_GB en_IE en_NZ
es_AR es_BO es_CL es_CO es_DO es_EC es_ES es_GT es_HN es_MX es_PA

fr_CH fr_LU he_IL it_CH iw_IL kl_GL nl_BE nl_NL pl_PL POSIX pt_BR
pt_PT ru_RU sv_FI sv_SE hu_HU ro_RO tr_TR

These locales come with a statement

% Distribution and use is free, also
% for commercial purposes.

Thus they do not allow modification; it is unclear, however, if this
statement was meant as a license.

As discussed in http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=555168 these
locales could strictly speaking not be part of Debian which would be a great
loss.
(Currently they are allowed pending investigation).

To properly resolve this, I would like to ask you the following question:

Would you be willing to relicense these locale(s) to a proper license, e.g.
(L)GPL v2 or higher or another free software license of your choice?

If you have any questions regarding this issue, do not hesitate to contact
me (via the reply-to address set).

Thanks for helping to resolve this!

Bug#555168: Contact data for Keld Simonsen (ISO PDTR 14652/ISO/IEC 14651)

2012-07-12 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Dear Ladies and Sirs,
I'm working for the Debian organisation and try to clarify some
software license issues. One person heavily involved is Keld Simonsen:

I cannot reach him under the given e-mail address, do you have a more
recent / working one? He is (was) most likely active in the Danish

As discussed in
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=555168 this
locale could strictly speaking not be part of Debian which would be a
great loss. (Currently it is allowed pending investigation).

To properly resolve this, I would like to ask you the following
question:

Would you be willing to relicense this locale to a proper license,
e.g. (L)GPL v2 or higher or another free software license of your choice?

If you have any questions regarding this issue, do not hesitate to
contact me (via the reply-to address set).

Thanks for helping to resolve this!

2012-06-27 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Hello A S Alam,
thanks for your reply, and no, you did not miss anything, the e-mail
was kindly quickly directed to you (by bubulle).

Did you also do the locale file for pa_IN (e-mail address
amanli...@netscape.net)?

From your reply I assume GNU General Public License V2 or later is
fine for both files?

Thanks again!

Best regards

  Helge

I am fully agree with any changes in locale file, whichever you think
is more suitable free software license. As I am not expert for

software free. All my contribution for open source should be
available as free software and though should be part of debian.

Bug#555168: Unclear license situation for (e)glibc locales provided by you

2012-06-19 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Hello,
you are listed as contact person/author of the following locale:

mi_NZ

This locale comes with a statement

% Distribution and use is free, also
% for commercial purposes.

Thus it does not allow modification; it is unclear, however, if this
statement was meant as a license.

Provided that Keld Jørn Simonsen agree with this, we would be very happy
to see this file officially put under a Free license. Using the same

Do you have a working e-mail address of Keld? The one listed in the

 Hope that helps.

Yes, definitly. Hopefully Keld can be contacted, this would solve many
other problematic locales as well.

This locale comes with a statement

% Distribution and use is free, also

Nope, you already told it the bug before I started[1]. I listed all

an explanation.

 Quoting Tomislav Vujec (tvu...@redhat.com):

The other contributor, namely Pablo Saratxaga, is a well-known name in
the l10n community. He was (is?) working at Mandrakesoft and doing a
 lot of l10n-related work.

See [5].

You can very certainly reach him by googling a bit, which is certainly
worth it as he contributed many locales. Trying to find an alternative
address to @mandrakesoft.com might be a good idea.

Both e-mail adresses known to me failed (with timeouts).

My plan is to first send out all e-mails and see what I get. For those
who contributed lots of locales, I collected them in one mail
(unfortunately all e-mail addresses were invalid), currently I'm
working through the remaining list.

I'm not going for the implicit list unless the author also worked on
the non modify one, at least for now.

Definitly. Just for clarity:
So may I note that »LGPGL 2.1 and later« applies to both bs_BA and

Bug#555168: Unclear license situation for (e)glibc locales provided by you

2012-06-07 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Hello,
you are listed as contact person/author of the following locale(s):

en_BW en_ZW

These locales come with a statement

% Distribution and use is free, also
% for commercial purposes.

Thus they do not allow modification; it is unclear, however, if this
statement was meant as a license.

As discussed in
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=555168 these
locales could strictly speaking not be part of Debian which would be a
great loss. (Currently they are allowed pending investigation).

To properly resolve this, I would like to ask you the following
question:

Would you be willing to relicense these locale(s) to a proper license,
e.g. (L)GPL v2 or higher or another free software license of your choice?

If you have any questions regarding this issue, do not hesitate to
contact me (via the reply-to address set).

Thanks for helping to resolve this!

Bug#555168: Update meaning of table values

2012-06-03 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Hello,
I added an additional value for the third column in
http://www.helgefjell.de/debianitem.php?name=bug555168language=en

For completeness, here are the meaning of the column entires:

The first column is the locale, the second states the status:
implicit - no license given, impllicitly the one of (e)glibc
GPL versionless - license GPL, but no version given
Non-modify - License which does not allow modification
Broken - License which is truncated

The third column states if the author replied so far:
Resolved - The author resolved the license issue
Contact - An initial contact was made
None - No reply to this issue so far
Undeliverable - The e-mail address of the original submitter no longer works
A dash indicates that no contact attempt was made so far

The fourth column states if the license is now ok:
It contains either the name of the license (in green), the word
implicit in blue if the licnese is given implicitly, unclear (in
orange) if the status is unclear or no in red if the license is not
ok.

The final column links to relevant e-mails, if any.

Greetings

Helge
