It is. AFAICT, parisc will not replace the kernel in any sort of
upgrade.

You have to modify palo.conf by hand to point at the new kernel and
run palo manually.

A okay, I understand :) Well, the fact that I have to modify
the file.
But that would mean that there should already be a new kernel
somewhere on
the /boot partition?! Which is just not (yet) included in the conf

yes, there should be - assuming /boot was created and mounted
properly.

If not, hunt for the right linux-image (32-bit UP) and install it.

The /boot has been created and is mounted, but I thought I made it
100mb and it's in fact 42mb, so I guess it's too small, because there
is no 2.6.xx kernel :(

BTW, for now, do not use 2.6.18 SMP kernels. I believe fixes went
into

2.6.22 that help make parisc SMP stable again.

Would SMP kernels be even installed on a A180C, which is not a
multi-processing box?!

probably not. But this is going to a mailing list...warning is for
others too.

Makes sense :)

My sources.list now is:
debian1:/etc/apt# more sources.list

deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 r0 _Etch_ - Official hppa DVD

Ok. I just find it odd that unstable is used for etch DVD builds.
Normally I would expect to see stable or testing (for
prerelease) there.

I can't answer that one, I jsut state was is said in the sources.list.

I also tried to add 2 SCSI cards, a Adaptec 29160 and a Compaq
(Adapted 3960D) with a Seagate 18Gb Atlas V (wide) drive, but here I
see the same as with the IDE/SATA controler, the card is seen but not
the drive :( I was hoping I could use this drive since it's newer,
and wide drives are more available to me than the standard drives
inside the box. Any ideas?

Angelo

42mb should be fine for more than a few kernels and initrd.img files.
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6421323 Jun 25 19:35 vmlinux-2.6.21-2-parisc64-smp
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5521413 Jul 3 10:22 initrd.img-2.6.21-2-parisc64-smp

so that's ~12MB. And you can get 3 sets on your /boot.
32-bit UP kernel might be smaller.

I don't think any of the Adaptec drivers have been tested on parisc-linux.
If the driver offers some debug options, it would be interesting to see
the output of modprobe in case the problem is something obvious.

If you are just looking for something that just works, either the LSI
u320 (53c1030) or slightly older u160 (53c1010) controllers do work.

An important nit is that the A180 firmware only supports booting from
the built-in Lasi SCSI. Most other PA-RISC systems support booting
from LSI 53c8xx PCI adapters (never tried 53c1010).

I use a drive hooked up to the lasi700 controller for palo. Debian is
installed on a drive hanging off an LSI 53c895 controller.

hrm...I was expecting 2.6 as well. Not sure what's up with that.

Huh? If you are installing Etch, there is *no way* that you still have a
2.4 kernel. 2.4 kernels were completely removed from both Debian in
general and from the installer before Etch was released.

Hello,

into it from here. Later I will post the sources.list, but it should
be okay, since I remarked all lines before I did a sudo apt-cdrom add
for all 3 the DVD's for 4.0 and then performed a dist-upgrade.

The title of your mail says help needed _installing_ Debian 4.0,
not help needed _upgrading to_ Debian 4.0. That is a pretty
fundamental
difference and you put people trying to help you completely on the
wrong

foot by mixing up these terms.
Also, it is not really advisable to try *upgrading* from Debian to
Ubuntu

or vice versa. They are completely separate distributions, and some
differences can cause problems. It may be possible, but mixing
Debian and
Ubuntu in any way is not guaranteed to work and you are basically
on your

own to solve any resulting issues.

If you are upgrading from Debian Sarge to Debian Etch, I suggest
you read

the release notes for Etch [1].

Cheers,
FJP

[1] http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/hppa/release-notes/

Hello,

No disrespect intended, but my original mail was pretty clear about
wanting to install 4.0 but having problems with it, and then I wrote
that an install of 3.0 would work, so someone on this list suggested
to do that first and then a dist-upgrade. So perhaps reading my
original mail would clarify it for you?!

Besides that, I never suggested I did an update from Debian to Ubuntu
(as far as I know, there is no Ubuntu for HPPA), I just stated that I
had some experience with Ubuntu and also asked if there was a
sources.list builder for HPPA Debian like there is for (i386/x64/PPC)
Ubuntu.

country settings the system looks for a CD-ROM drive and then it just
 stops. No errors message what-so-ever.

I suspect an HPMC (High Priority Machine Check) when some driver gets

Installing from the 3.0r4 DVD I had around seems to go without problems.

Yeah, that's fine. Just apt-get dist-upgrade after appropriately
editing the /etc/apt/sources.list file.

Can you point me to the correct contents or an example sources file?

I'm using a HP external SCSI DVD-ROM drive and using a HP serial console
 connected to the system.

Another question, I have a PCI IDE/SATA controller card lying around which
I tried in one A180C, the card is seen by the box (as RAID) but not the
drive connected to it. Is this at all possible and/or should I use a SATA
drive instead of the IDE I tried this with?

It can't be used at the boot device and none of the IDE/SATA controller
drivers are tested on parisc. It would be interesting to know which controller
it is you have and whether it works - but only if you have time to fool
around with something that might not work at all.

Hmmm, that's too bad it can't be a boot device, this was the reason I
wanted to get this IDE/SATA card working, since I have only one 4Gb.
SCSI drive in each of the 3 systems and they are pretty old by now
(and used pretty intensive) and I can't find spares.
But if it helps the HPPA linux project I'm willing to spend some time on it :)

Is it possible to put a PCI graphics card and perhaps a PCI USB card
in the systems and use them as a graphical console instead of the
text-oriented seriel console? Perhaps even to install X?? :)

Angelo

No. The BIOS (PDC) was able to read the boot loader, kernel, and ramdisk
from the DVD to get things started. The debian installer now needs to
mount the DVD in order to load more packages and ultimately install them.

Yeah, that's fine. Just apt-get dist-upgrade after appropriately

correct is relative to geography and which release you want to run.
Most of my boxen have:
deb http://mirrors.kernel.org/debian/ testing main non-free contrib
deb-src http://mirrors.kernel.org/debian/ testing main non-free contrib

I already edited the sources file (I have experience with Ubuntu) and

It would help linux in general since parisc typically exposes driver bugs.
(Write posting and DMA API violations typically)

Is it possible to put a PCI graphics card and perhaps a PCI USB card

A180 doesn't support gfx console.
PA-RISC workstations support gfx consoles.

You can install a gfx card and once the system is up, run X11 on it.
But only in 8-bit color if using a HP gfx card.
See the FAQ on www.parisc-linux.org for more general info on PCI gfx cards.

grant
