hp hasn't released any docs for these ancient pieces of metal which
are pretty much the only way to get decent graphics on your j6700.
no docs = no drivers.

using unsupported graphics cards is pretty hit or miss. see the
graphics faq on www.parisc-linux.org.

debian on hppa is pretty much the same as debian on any other platform. you
will likely need to use a serial console to install it because of the
graphics. see the installation manual on www.debian.org.

Why is that? Is it possible to put in a supported graphic card and use Xorg with it? If not, why?
Has anyone done it?

How is it to install debian-hppa? is it similar to the regular install of debian?
Is debian-hppa exacly the same as regular debian?

Installation is very very easy, but performance of the system is a really bad.
The 50% performance against HP-UX (mentioned on the website) seems to be
the truth (on my C3700).

Main reason is - as usual - the bad code quality of the gcc compiler for PA-RISC.

Lack of documentation for those graphics cards.

Yes and Yes.
See the graphics how-to on the www.parisc-linux.org FAQ.

For the most part yes.
Boot and device drivers are different.

Once installed and running, nearly all of debian runs.
A few x86 specific packages are not available.

2007-02-11 Thread kmaziz

Ive bought a HP J6700, and ive been reading that the FX10-Pro graphics card
is not supported on any linux dist.
Why is that? Is it possible to put in a supported graphic card and use Xorg
with it? If not, why?
Has anyone done it?

How is it to install debian-hppa? is it similar to the regular install of
debian?
Is debian-hppa exacly the same as regular debian?
