/var/chroot/bind/usr/sbin, named-xfer is there also. I tried to set

I thought that named-xfer option should be set relative as all other paths

Yes. That is weird. Probably something else is wrong.

Re: Remote shutdown ... of Win95

2001-03-17 Thread Marcel Hicking

Why not set up an some sort of unix -like
environment on your win box and remotely
run a shutdown?

Cygwin does run under 9x.
The Cygwin FAQ is at:
http://sources.redhat.com/cygwin/faq/faq_toc.html
Cygwin is GPL'd.

Theres a port of sshd based on cygwin.
Not sure if it runs under 9x:
http://www.onlinemagic.com/~bgould/sshd.html

You might also try ATT Unix for Windows
which comes with telnet and rsh daemons
(and much more) as well as the shutdown
command.
http://www.research.att.com/sw/tools/uwin/

There's a contributed port of sshd to
u/win available, too.

You may want to try running VNC:

 http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/

It is basically a "remote desktop" application, so you connect to the
VNC server, you see the (in this case) Win95 desktop, you choose
 Start|Shutdown...

Note, though, that if you have applications running that fail to shut
down cleanly, VNC will go away, so you won't be able to connect
remotely, and Win95 will be waiting for you to press "End Task" before
it will continue to shut down.

 Gotta love MS.

Hmm, how does a switch deal with the same mac address coming from two ports
at the same time?

It will probably flap. MAC address forging will only work if the host
that owns the forged MAC is switched off or disabled in some other
way.

Does that mean that we've lost the added security from ethernet switches? I
can see that if a switch was fooled into sending traffic to two ports that
could be a security problem, if security depends on the switching function.

Using a non-VLANned switch for security is a bad idea IMO.

making own dep packages

2001-03-17 Thread Grischa Schuering

Hello,

we customized a new apache-ssl deb package, by adding a module called
zmod to it. We need this module here in Germany for statistical
analysis.
Now every time a new apache-ssl version (or security fix) is available
our package is overwritten by apt-get dist-upgrade utility.

What is the common way naming the custom versions of packages (or
version number... etc), so that the package won't be auto-updated ???

Thanks

Another question: is it something bad - can i live with that? After

"compile". So maybe i will just cut those nasty messages :-)

It may be easier for you to show us parts of your directory layout and
parts of your named.conf.

For example: if your chroot environment is /var/named, then do you have a
a /var/named/usr/sbin/named-xfer executable?

I am not at my machine now so i can't give you my exact config, but my dir is
/var/chroot/bind, and of course named is in /var/chroot/bind/usr/sbin as
named-xfer is. I tired to set named-xfer /usr/sbin/named-xfer in named.conf -
relative to chroot cage - it didn't work. A tried also to set it to
/var/chroot/bind/usr/sbin/named-xfer result in logs is the same - only paths
differs

Thanks
