Re: ADSL problem...

I'm not sure if it'll work as I have an ADSL router which does pppoe. This
doesn't connect so I don't really see what I'll gain from the deb pkg.

Also, the docs (if they can be called that) which come with the modem tell me
that you can connect multiple machines to the modem over the lan as long as
only one at a time is using a connection to the internet

I think the basic problem is that 3com stuff is crap - always has been IMHO.
I've never liked playing with it - except the Palm Pilot, but then, they didn't
create and code it! ;-)

Cheers,
Jason.

Hi Robert!

I understand what you're saying. The software for windoze does use pppoe. It's
a really bizarre utility which creates a pseudo lan device and routes between
that and the physical lan card. I cannot, however, use an adsl router
configured for pppoe bring up a connection.

All I really need, I guess, is a way to force the modem to start it's pppoa
connection and then connect to the modem via pppoe. As I say, this is a guess -
a really big guess! :)

Thanks,
Jason.

It's actually an external modem which is connected to a peecee either with a lan card
or usb.

The problem is that the ISP is using PPPoA, as in PPP over ATM.

ADSL problem...

2001-02-01 Thread Jason Quigley

This time, I'll try putting a subject!! :-)

Hi!

I have been supplied with a 3com homeconnect dual link adsl modem by my isp. Does
anybody know of any Debian (or other Linux distros) to control this rotten equipment.
I only received software for winblows and I really, really don't want to have to
install that rotten OS on any of my machines as I'm afraid that it's festering leprosy
may affect the rest of the network.

I know some of you may suggest getting the isp to replace it, but that's not an option
as here in Spain the telcos are only one step ahead of the most underdeveloped third
world nation and they don't grok anything other than (said in best zombie voice)
windows - and not even w2k at that!! With an *average* turnaround time of 6 months to
get an adsl line installed, I'm afraid technology might have moved on by the time they
start to figure out that other OS's exist!

Anyway, all help would be greatly appreciated to keep the evil empire out of our
office.

Many thanks,
Jason.

P.S. I hate Timofonica, I haaaete Timofonica.

Re: unusal fetchmail error

2001-01-24 Thread Jason Quigley

I get similar problems with fetchmail. It times out while waiting for a server
response. Even if the timeout parameter is supplied it does the same. IIRC, this is
listed on the bugs page for fetchmail.

I threw together a couple of scripts to fix the problem.

This goes in my /etc/cron.d directory:

# /etc/cron.d/fetchmail_check: crontab fragment to check for fetchmail timeout hang.

# Check if fetchmail is hanging - every 15 minutes
0,15,30,45 * * * * root if [ ! "`tail -1 /var/log/fetchmail | grep timeout`" = "" ];
then /etc/init.d/fetchmail restart; fi

This goes in my /etc/init.d directory and is linked using /usr/sbin/update-rc.d:

#!/bin/sh
#
# /etc/init.d/fetchmail: start and stop fetchmail bg process.
#

FETCHINTERVAL=180
FETCHPROG=/usr/bin/fetchmail
FETCHMAILRC=/etc/fetchmailrc
FETCHLOG=/var/log/fetchmail

test -x $FETCHPROG || exit 1

case $1 in
start)
echo -n "Starting fetchmail background process..."

$FETCHPROG -v -t 120 -d $FETCHINTERVAL -f $FETCHMAILRC -L $FETCHLOG

echo "done."
;;
stop)
echo -n "Stopping fetchmail background process..."

$FETCHPROG -q
;;
restart)
/etc/init.d/fetchmail stop
/etc/init.d/fetchmail start
;;
esac

I have also added the usual log rotation and cleanup stuff.

HTH,
Jason.

Again, as I said in another post, you've got to allow leeway for somebody who is not
using his mother tongue. I know who I was sending the message to. What you are saying
here is that you can interpret what the original poster said, but I can't? Try not to
be so supercilious!

Actually, the most xenophobe's I have come across in my life are English! You just
have to look at all the ambassadors, otherwise known as football hooligans. Look at
Prince Phillip! Look at virtually every English sitcom from the 70's and 80's!

I actually looked at his email address, signature and surname to make a pretty good
guess at his nationality!! I was not calling him names based on his nationality, just
what he posted.

I flamed one poster who to me is a xenophobe, is English and fits into the largest
group of xenophobes that I know. My nationality if you want it, is Irish. I've lived
in England, so I have a pretty good idea of what I'm talking about.

Ha ha!! No worries though - I've chopped off the two fingers that typed the extra bit
and stabbed my left eye as punishment for not seeing the lack of a question mark! ;-)

Anyway, my point was that anybody can make mistakes (as I very aptly demonstrated) and
I think it takes a real arse to criticise somebody for making en error with what is
obviously not their first language.

The original poster was obviously trying to put across the idea that the list is an
English speaking one and that German words wouldn't generally be understood by the
majority of lurkers and posters here.

I am now living in Spain and if everybody here was as short-sighted as that, it would
make life here very tough going.

So, wake up little islanders, there's a world full of other people out there
(otherwise known to some as "bloody foreigners")!

Cheers,
