Re: Error on harddrive when booting

2000-09-02 Thread Security
Sorry, no help on the Compaq, just an idea on how to bypass pressing the
"F1". Maybe you can set your BIOS to boot ignoring all errors or whatever.

I had a similar problem on an older 486 but it had the ability to boot
through selectable errors in the BIOS, like no keyboard, whatever.

It didn't "fix" the problem but it would just report the error to the
console and boot right up. You may be able to do something similar on the
CompaQ.

crond likes full pathnames is my first thought. Thats likely why it works

I have to whole heartedly agree with Russell on this. I have been running a
handful of el cheapo 4 and 8 port hubs here for years and the only failure
in thousands of hours of use was loseing a BNC port on 2 from a lightning

components to fail in a hub than a PC running anything for an OS.

It never pays to overthink the plumbing. The simple solution general is the

Jeremy and Russell;

Thanks for more pieces of the puzzle. The offending code is actually in
/etc/pcmcia/serial.

the chattr +i /etc/inittab command nuked the behaviour but I'll edit that
script to fix it when I get to the console on the laptop

The relevant lines in /etc/pcmcia/serial:

   echo "S$NR:12345:respawn:$INITTAB $DEVICE" >> /etc/inittab
fgrep -v $DEVICE /etc/inittab > /etc/inittab.new
mv /etc/inittab.new /etc/inittab

Big thanks to everyone for the suggestions, tips and pointers.

And in case no one realized it the command in an earlier post

"for i in `find /dir`; do ls -l &&cat $i|grep string;done"

was a tongue in cheek joke, but it would find the string and the file its in.

Thats the coolest thing about the Linux command line tools. Being able to
obtain the same results by varying methods.

Thanks again.

Well, I have not totally figured out how this is happening. What I do know
is that /etc/inittab gets altered when the /etc/init.d/pcmcia script is
run.

After a bit of looking around in that file, I realized my skill is not
refined enough to see what mechanism actually alters it. But it definitely
happens at that point.

Just FYI

Thanks

In regards to /etc/inittab being altered to spawn a getty on ttyS3 on
reboot.

Tried the egrep -r (through the entire filesystem) and ttyS3 shows up in
/dev/mem, /dev/core, /dev/kmem/, /etc/inittab and in /var/run/stab, some
docs,/usr/include/asm/serial.h and in the logs.

Thanks for the tip, Chet! Much cleaner than "for i in `find /dir`; do ls -l
&&cat $i|grep ttyS0;done"

I am leaning towards it being PCMCIA related as one other person on the
list noted the same thing on a laptop.

Slowly eliminating what it is not, although I prefer those quantum leaps of

I am not sure if this is what you are looking for, but I modified the
finger gateway cgi script to do a web based whois from cgi-bin on the
webserver.

The finger gateway script came in the cgi scripts with Debian. I just
changed finger to whois. seems to work well.

Here it is:

<---begin script-->
#!/bin/sh
# I don't know who wrote the "finger gateway" script I hacked this from
WHOIS=/usr/bin/whois

echo Content-type: text/html
echo

if [ -x $WHOIS ]; then
if [ $# = 0 ]; then
cat << EOM
WHOIS Gateway
Whois Gateway

This is a gateway to "whois". Type a domain name in your
browser's
search dialog.
EOM
else
echo \
$WHOIS "$*"
echo \
fi
else
echo Cannot find whois on this system.
fi
cat << EOM

EOM

I had this awhile ago and if I recall correctly an apt-get -f install did
the trick. Although it may have been more than just that. Maybe I used the
dist-upgrade again, can't remember.

I would suggest running:

apt-get update

apt-get -f install

Maybe someone else can give better detailed advice, but I do know I got it
fixed somehow and didn't have to reget all the archives.

Is this what you need?

mail:~# /usr/sbin/rdate time.nist.gov

is how I sync my clock(s). Actually I sync one that way and the rest sync
off of that one.

I am in the Midwest in the USA and system time gets synced with that
command.

I just realized noone else tossed this out as a solution.

Be aware that a drastic change in system time might cause some strange
crond activity following a sync.

Re: Webserver stats for customers

I use webalizer with crond and a script that calls seperate config files
for each domain.

Like this:

webalizer -c domain.a.conf
webalizer -c domain.b.conf
webalizer -c domain.c.conf
and so on.

Then use custom configs for each domain. I will note each domain needs its
own logfile but you should be doing that anyway.

Maybe not the best or most elegant method but it works for me. I am doing
it this way with about a dozen domains.

and on and on every 10 seconds or so.

I never noticed this before now it concerns me. I have another, very much
the same box (HW & OS) that does not show this output.

Is this normal or is something amiss?

TIA

Robert:

Using exim with RBL enabled to just quietly drop inbound SPAM pretty well
eliminated SPAM here. The RBL is at:

http://maps.vix.com/rbl/

The Internet Junkbuster http://junkbuster.com/ is also a source of much info.

SPAM control is addressed on both these sites.

I still see the occasional "this is not spam because " mail, though.
New and improved non-spam spam. Heh.

Nick;

Here is my /etc/ppp/ip-up.d/00ipmasq which I use on my ppp connected gateway:

##Begin
#!/bin/sh
#
# ipmasq.ip-up Reinitializes the ipmasq settings when PPP comes up
#
# v1.0  19 July 1998
#

test -x /sbin/ipmasq || exit 0

if [ -e /etc/ipmasq/ppp ]; then
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_ftp.o
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_raudio.o
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_irc.o
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_cuseeme.o
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_vdolive.o
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_quake.o
/sbin/ipfwadm -F -a masquerade -P all -S 192.168.1.95/24 -D 0.0.0.0/0
/sbin/ipfwadm -F -p deny
/sbin/ipfwadm -M -s 10 10 10
   /sbin/ipmasq
fi

##END

I believe that the /sbin/ipfwadm -M -s 10 10 10 is the
pertinent line.

Note: this machine is a 2.0.37 kernel on Debian 2.1. I am not sure of the
equivalent ipchains incantation. Maybe someone else on the list can toss
it out here.

I am no masqquerading or Linux guru. I have used Linux since '95 and seem
to have forgotten more than I remember.

Hope it helps...

Tom
