Re: Defining ISP?

2004-09-14 Thread Jonathan G - Mailing Lists
Hi,
what i used to do is install a base system and then install some of the
package packs i've defined.

For example, if what i want is install a web server with php % perl
support i use a config file what i've defined myself which contains this:

apt-get install apache2-common apache2-mpm-prefork
libapache2-mod-auth-mysql libapache2-mod-perl2 php4-common
libmailtools-perl libhtml-format-perl bzip2 file libio-socket-ssl-perl
ca-certificates libapache2-mod-php4 php4-mysql php4-pear

For the rest of services exactly the same. I'v defined manually the
whole list of packages needed for web server, ftp server, irc server,
mail server (smtp, pop and imap), antivirus server, etc...

If you can build a local mirror of you version of debian, i.e. sarge,
you can do local network installations, and your installs will be so fast.

That work fine for me at least :)
BR,
jonathan

Most ISP will probably have different servers for the different services and on each
of them they will start with a secure base install with as few software installed as
possible and then just install apache/postfix/proftpd whatever they need and customize
it.
I don't see a big bonus in a special ISP distribution. A better integration of
iptables firewalls, vlans or traffic shapers would be nice but that's nothing ISP
specific.
bye,

P.S.: pbuilder is a nice tool to build minimal installations that you can just untar onto a new harddisk

In such case the best you can do is setup some kind of QoS on network
gear and TOS labeling along your network in order to prioritize traffic
and get rid as much as posible of hard flows.

I guess the most important (and obvious) consideration is that all VLANs on
the same wire share the same bandwidth. With normal loads, this should be
fine, but you'll have to think about what happens if a host on one of the
networks runs amok.

4.) Hint: If you setup VLAN with /etc/network/interfaces please keep in
mind that the physical interface has to be up in order to create VLANs

 ethX.VID.
You'd better leave up but unconfigured the physical interface in order
to avoid further routing trouble.

:) hehehe, Ok, i was just asking because there are some MTA's that can
fit better in some environments than others.

I like features of QMail, Postfix and Exim, but i hate others for an ISP
environment.

Re: "kickstart" for debian needed

2001-03-28 Thread Mailing List

I agree that something like this is needed badly in Debian.

However... considering there has been so much hassle over the boot floppies
alone, i doubt there will be much chance a kickstart-like proggie will make
it in.

Re: DNS Configuration doubt

2001-02-22 Thread Mailing List
Hi darlock,

Its simply to find out what the problem is.

Do a whois on "EsNic" and see if it can lookup your domain name. If it is
there, then the problem is with the DNS servers (or maybe the DNS servers
aren't even listed properly there?). If it isn't there your domain isn't
even registered.

If it finds your domain name, use one of the listed DNS servers to do an
nslookup. If the listed DNS servers can resolve your domain, then you are in
the clear and it is your local bind that is messed up. If they can't then it
the DNS servers that set up properly for your domain.

Simple, eh? ;-)

Jason.

Re: Strange entry in syslog

2001-01-26 Thread Mailing List

Interestingly, I've been seeing that on many servers we operate.
We run unstable though...

Sometimes we get hundreds of those messages, with exactly the same problems
you experienced.
We always thought some script-kiddie was trying to find some buffer overflow
shxt on us. Is it?

Any ideas ?

I have to agree with Chris.

Even with all of AOL's programmers and security people (haha), they are
still regularly successfully cracked.

Do you think you could come up with something to rival AOL? Well... maybe...
but good luck ;-)

Re: NOC scripting

2001-01-22 Thread Mailing List

I must agree. Netsaint is a superior system for a NOC, since you're not just
monitoring hosts, but also your network.

What's the point of knowing 50 odd hosts are down when the actual problem
lies with a switch connecting them all? I suppose you could GUESS, but why
do it when netsaint is obviously the best choice? It can even make up a cute
3d map and all.

Thats what we use and we're happy.

Re: Re[2]: Back-up DNS?

2001-01-21 Thread Mailing List

Well I CAN see the point of these DNS services (free and paid).

Sure.. you can set up some additional servers in your datacenter or network,
but thats the point... it is CONNECTED to your own network!

Suppose your network dies... some router or switch blows. Then what? All the
additional 486s or Xeons behind your network will be rather pointless. Or a
power failure strikes (think of the brownouts/blackouts affecting california
now... i'm in HK so don't ask me for the details), then what?

However, if you have some servers on some OTHER network, at least they'll
still be up and running, right?

That is the main point of all this.

We at Zentek International Co. Limited (
http://www.zentek-international.com) have been looking for someone to
exchange DNS secondaries for a while, without success. We operate from Hong
Kong, so if you're in the US or anywhere else that is the ULTIMATE in
redundancy (half way around the world is as good as you get ;-) ). Email me
if you're interested :-)

granitecanyon.com is dead half the time or really slow to reply to queries.

centralinfo.net isn't accepting any new applications.

I know they are free and we shouldn't complain. What you pay is what you

Re: named anonymous ftp

2000-12-27 Thread Mailing List

That would be because FTP isn't the same as HTTP. There are no "named" ftp
servers. You MUST seperate accounts by IP if you want to offer anonymous FTP
services like that.
HTTP, on the other hand, allows you to use "named" hosts. So either don't
allow anonymous FTP access, or give them their own IPs.

Fw: Trying to get online

2000-11-04 Thread Mailing List

Hi!

Did you recompile the kernel yourself? If you did, remember to include PPP
in the Networking section (afai remember). Guessing from the newbiness,
thats not what you did ;-)

Anyway, most stock kernels DO include ppp by default thought. Try typing
"insmod ppp" and see what that brings up. Hopefully that will solve your
problems. However, if ppp code was already compiled into your kernel, and
yet ppp can't see it, you may have a larger problem on hand.

Hi people,

I am trying to get online with my debian box. I ran pppconfig and went
through the motions. My connection is through bartnet. After I exited the
pppconfig I tried
pon bartnet and it came up with this message...

"/usr/sbin/pppd: This system lacks the support for PPP. This could be
because the PPP kernel module is not loaded or because the kernel is not
configured for PPP."

So what do I have to do now.

Andrew Martin

P.S. pppconfig never asked me for an "irq". Why?

Re: resource limits

2000-11-03 Thread Mailing List

We tried that too, but it doesn't seem to limit actual cgis. It does limit
the actual apache process. This is strange to us, as we though all child
processes would inherit the limit.

We don't use the stock suexec, because we recompiled it to use /home

Perhaps this has a factor to play?

Re: resource limits

2000-11-03 Thread Mailing List

Actually, I have a related question.

We offering web hosting to our clients. When people run huge CGIs, normally
we are notified, and kill them manually. We've also got a small script we
run periodically to kill of any "stuck" or "hanged" processes by users' cgis
(we use suexec so they run under their usernames).

HOWEVER, as this is a reactive measure, rather than a PROactive measure,
we'd rather have a way of LIMITING their usage like we do diskspace.

By putting it in the /etc/init.d/apache script, it would limit the apache
server as well (www-data) user, and thats bad. We ONLY want to limit the
user's cgi processes. We haven't founded any script that suexec uses to run
user cgis, so we can't limit it that way.

Any ideas???

Thanks in advance.

Notice the SAME chequered graphic (the one with red x crosses). The graphic

As for the availability of other companies using Debian, i can tell you

it would be foolish for an ISP to go with a "rogue" distro.

Re: Easier administration (similar to Linuxconf)

2000-03-30 Thread Mailing List
Well... its true... if people wrote enough modules for Linuxconf, then it
could, theoretically, have functionality similar to colbat servers.

However... even if you don't have all those modules, at least standardize
on some common tools, and make the functionality similar, if not better,
than colbat servers. I know colbat servers don't have exim and smail,
zmailer, etc. ... only sendmail (by default, afaik). And that allows them
to make the interface and everything work PROPERLY and FULLY with just that
server. If someone wrote something like that, and they said "either use
Apache, Sendmail, webalizer and majordomo, or don't use Linuxconf", i
wouldn't have a beef. You can't expect people to write a module for
everything under the sun. But at least get the few modules really working
with full customization.

I hope you guys know what i mean. I don't expect it to work with
everything. But get something working like Colbat servers... only a few
package options, but those packages, once installed, can be fully
customized easily, and the configs can be distributed to many servers
easily, without hassle and fuss.

I'd be willing to help out a bit if someone shared the same philosophy as I
do :-)

Oh.. and I know i could do this all with scripts, write it all myself, but
thats not the point. I mean... i don't admin hundreds of servers... but its
enough to make manually configuring each a time consuming hassle. If
something is already out there, why would i need to write scripts? Why not
pool all our efforts towards one project and get it working properly? :-)

Jason.

Easier administration (similar to Linuxconf)

2000-03-29 Thread Mailing List
 Hi!

You know the "web-enabled" administration software used by Colbat servers?
I was wondering if anything for Linux (and hopefully debanized) was
 similar?

It doesn't have to have a web interface, but something easy to use, fast
to
 distribute, would be great.

I know about the Linuxconf effort, but it falls short of the full
customization offered by the Colbat software.

Specifically, the software should be able to do things like set up virtual
hosting on apache, and at the same time set quotas, allocate IPs (or named
based) for the domains, set up pop accounts, allow users to set up their
own virtual forwarding lists (like .qmail-something, but with sendmail).
Basically, make webhosting easier and less time consuming.

This is because while I do have time for administration, i'd like my time
to be used more productively doing other things as well :-)

Oh.. and if you happen to know how i can easily make a bunch of servers
have the same configuration, but still have machine-specific stuff (can't
have 10 servers responding to the same IPs and such), please tell me :-)
I
don't have huge requirements on this, just something simple and easy to
set
 up.

 Thanks in advance :-)

 Jason.
