Re: Firewall and remote access?
Is it possible to have a secure way to access a computer behind a firewall remotely? Depends what you mean by accessing. Usual web/mail/dns servers are behind a firewall (in a DMZ). Explain what you want to access and how you are planning on accessing it (ssh, telnet, smtp). For complex needs, it is called VPN (Virtual Private Network). Firewall and remote access?
Is it possible to have a secure way to access a computer behind a firewall remotely? Or would this destroy the whole point of the firewall? Thanks, Matt -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: Firewall and remote access?
It's possible if both the local and the remote have a static IP. Our secure servers have ssh firewalled to accept only a single IP address, so the only way in is through that IP address, which is usually an unused server or the office IP address. You should also be sure that whatever has the second IP address is also a reasonably secure server. - Original Message - From: Matt Fair [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: debian-isp@lists.debian.org Sent: Tuesday, March 20, 2001 4:03 PM Subject: Firewall and remote access? quote who=Matt Fair Is it possible to have a secure way to access a computer behind a firewall remotely? ssh, an ssh tunnel, vpns, etc. are secure ways of accessing machines behind firewalls. Or would this destroy the whole point of the firewall? philosophy What's the point of a firewall? /philosophy :) A firewall is there to stop everything you don't want coming in or going out... You're now specifying something that you *do* want; it's just a matter of selecting something appropriate, and making sure you know who's accessing it and when. - Jeff -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] - http://lazarus.aphid.net/ -- Is Murphy's Law constitutional?
