Dear Dee,

Thank you for your answer and your time! I've already post my question there but they
say
that I must install qmail and vpopmail using the traditional way (not using apt-get).

I'd like to install them using apt-get but all the howtos I've read doesn't look
reliable.
qmail is working great but when I try to add vpopmail that message appears.

Do you know a howto for debian I could trust?

Thanks again! Sincerely,

Agustn

We use:
Postfix
Courier-pop/imap
Squirrelmail
procmail
sanitizer/f-prot
spamassassin
openLDAP (soon)

Tequila seems almost perfect but it is in beta.

There are testing packages for vpopmail but it seems to require putting
qmail into the mix.

What are your experiences with these or other software libre web control

Courier vpopmail

2003-03-23 Thread Dieter Heiliger
Hi Gurus!

Recently I installed a combination of Courier IMAP/POP, Sqwebmail and
vpopmail on a Debian Woody server. I downloaded inofficial vpopmail
packages for woody. I also built the several Courier and Courier-SSL
packages from source after having changed the rules file to include
--with-authvchkpw. Everything seemed to work fine.

Unfortunately after having gone productive severe problems with
POP3/IMAP authentification occured. Sometimes the login procedure
worked, but very often it did not. At that time the authentification
used courier-authdaemon.

I learnt from a posting on the vpopmail mailing list that Courier's
authdaemon is not very stable and that authentification problems get
solved when compiling Courier using --without-authdaemon.

I tried that - but it initiated several new problems. Courier's build
configuration script told me that --without-authdaemon needs
--without-ldap. So I tried that. Unfortunately everything got worse.
My impression is that the Courier Debian package is not prepared for
being built without LDAP or authdaemon. There are several dependencies
between the several components of the Courier packages. I still try to
figure them out.

My question is: Did anyone install Courier IMAP/POP, Sqwebmail and
vpopmail on a Woody box? If yes: Do you use courier-authdaemon and if
so, is vpopmail authentification working well? If you do not use
courier-authdaemon, how did you get built Courier Debian packages without?

Any help is highly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Bye
Dieter

Hello,

My question is: Did anyone install Courier IMAP/POP, Sqwebmail and
vpopmail on a Woody box? If yes: Do you use courier-authdaemon and if
so, is vpopmail authentification working well? If you do not use
courier-authdaemon, how did you get built Courier Debian packages without?

I am using Courier IMAP/POP with the Postfix MTA and Squirrelmail on a
Sarge box, but it started as a Woody Box ;-).

Although all the users are virtual, I do not use vpopmail. But, I use
the courier-authdaemon with courier-ldap.

I get around vpopmail by creating an /etc/passwd entry for
each of the virtual users. The /etc/passwd file is a mirror
of and external LDAP db. All virtual users are given a /bin/false shell
in my IMAP /etc/passwd. It would be cleaner modify /etc/pam.d/* to use ldap
for auth, but my live system is a work in progress. ;-)

Since each virtual user has a /etc/passwd entry and known
on the local filesytem, I can setup kernel quotas. Although
since IMAP usually moves mail into the trash on delete, this can
potentially cause more problems than it is worth with virtual users.

Additonally, since I have all users in the /etc/passwd file I use Postfix's local
delivery agent to deliver mail the local /etc/passwd user. This occurs
while Open LDAP holds all the aliases which get mapped to the local
user which is also utilized by Postfix.

Courier uses LDAP to map the path of the users directory and check
passwords.

Although this is a bit of hack and it should look messy,
the system has been running since June 2002 with only
minor problems and handling over 10 million pieces of mail for 3000 users.

Of course, it takes many shell scripts to keep everything clean.

I used the following debian packages with postfix on my IMAP server:

ii courier-authda 0.39.1-1 Courier Mail Server authentication
daemon
ii courier-base 0.39.1-1 Courier Mail Server Base System
ii courier-debug 0.39.1-1 Debugging Tools for Courier Mail
Server
ii courier-doc0.39.1-1 Documentation for the Courier Mail
Server
ii courier-imap 1.5.1-1IMAP daemon with PAM and Maildir
support
ii courier-ldap 0.39.1-1 LDAP support for Courier Mail Server
ii courier-maildr 0.39.1-1 Mail delivery agent with filtering
abilities
ii courier-pop0.39.1-1 POP3 daemon with PAM and Maildir
support
rc courier-ssl0.37.3-3 Courier Mail Server SSL Package

vpopmail packaging

2002-06-25 Thread Loren Jordan
I have been trying to package up vpopmail into a .deb and have made a lot
of progress using the original vpopmail package available from SID(version
4.9.9)

I have been having a lot of troubles with it though, the Makefile is made
such that it only installs the vpopmail files inside of the vopmail users
~/ dir. I have posted a message to the vpopmail list and got no replies
from anybody about it. The trouble is I don't want to write my own
makefile (part of debian/rules) in the source package because every time
something changes in the up-stream source, the rules file must change.
I don't know much about the automake,autoconf,etc... so coming up with a
useful patch for the upstream version of makefile.am and configure.[am/in]
files is proving to be a lot of hair pulling for me.

If anybody has made more progress on this, I can find something else to
occupy my already busy time...

Thanks for any info,
Loren

take a look at http://208.45.228.30/~ted/vpopmaildebs/

The debs are compiled against mysql 3.23 (from woody, as opposed to 3.22
from potato), but you should be able to recompile from the sources against
whichever you like.

qmailadmin and vqadmin are included, but you'll probably need to recompile
them if you recompile vpopmail. (install libvpopmail-dev before compiling
qmailadmin and vqadmin of course).

I'm not an official debian package maintainer, so these may be less useful
than others would produce, but they're working for me.

I'd love to see these current and in woody!

Glad you asked...:-\..

Um no, docs are pretty limited for deployment (but abundant for end
users).assisted tweaking in #phpgroupware and #axisgroupware (my
nick is lex there if you want to ask for me)...

But you can start by dl'ding the source for phpgroupware RC3 (forget the
debs for now), doing cvs update on the root of the source, and looking
at it (docs for complete installation in the doc directory)

Phpgroupware supports at least three email clients: a squirrelmail
derivative (which will best support imap rather than POP3) called
felamimail, the native client (which is, as of now, deprecated but
functional for small sites) and anglesmail (which is what i use, made by
Angles Puglisi -hacker extraordinaire- and you can get it and its great
docs at www.anglemail.com)

I try to help as much as possible in testing the thing and anglemail has
been/is being tested in production environments for 400+ heavy email
users, felamimail has been tested for 3000 users (and it has had a bunch
of other tests) in another kind of envirnoment. As this are relatively
new deployments, they are not thoroughly documented (one of them is mine
so i have to find an excuse) but the deployers (such as myself) are
somehow friendly depending on the day of the week and/or phase of the
moon.

works fine together with qmail and courier-imap (using auth from qmail).

Hi,

Please take a look at Bill's toaster at http://shupp.org/toaster/.

It contains all the things you want, and more:

- Qmail SMTP Mail Server with SMTP-AUTH (Plain, CRAM-MD5), TLS (SSL) support, and
optional Virus Scanner.
- POP3 Server with APOP and SSL support
- IMAP Server with TLS (SSL) support
- WebMail Server
- Quota Support (usage viewable by webmail)
- Autoresponder
- Mailing Lists
- Web-Based Email Administration

The installation is very well documented in a nice copy-'n-paste howto.

Have fun!

Hi Theodor!

I am trying to set up a mail toaster on a Debian Woody system.

Here are the requirements:
 - qmail
 - pop3
 - pop3 authentification _not_ against /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow
 - virtual pop3 users
 - webmail access

Just what I use down here on the farm ;-)

Good to hear!

qmail is installed and works fine. I tried to implement vpopmail and
sqwebmail, but I was not able to get it to work. The sqwebmail debian
package does not come with vpopmail authentification included. My
attempts to build it from the source package with modified rules file
all failed.

It (recompilation) works for me with just trivial changes to ./configure
line in debian/rules. What kind of problem do you have?

I installed vpopmail binary package from unstable (it is not included in
woody).

dpkg --list *vpopmail*
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Installed/Config-files/Unpacked/Failed-config/Half-installed

ii vpopmail-bin 4.9.9-1vpopmail binaries
ii vpopmail-doc 4.9.9-1vpopmail documentation

Afterwards I tried to build sqwebmail from the debian source package. I
changed the rules file:

--with-authvchkpw
--without-authdaemon

This leads to the following error during build:

echo '#include /var/lib/vpopmail/include/config.h' vpopmail_config.h

Re: Looking for qmail, vpopmail, webmail solution

2002-06-21 Thread Loren Jordan

I currently run 2 systems with qmail/vpopmail/courier-imap and squirrelmail.

The only thing installed from source is vpopmail and courier-imap (no
working .deb's) but the default squirrelmail works just fine. The user
just has to enter the entire email address [EMAIL PROTECTED] for a username.

I have had no problems with this configuration. It all worked the first
time and hasn't broke yet... I run the imap on localhost so only the
webmail system can get at it.

In case you give up on sqwebmail, I can really advise you to use
squirrelmail. I use it in a production env running potato and woody and it
works fine together with qmail and courier-imap (using auth from qmail).

Hi,

Please take a look at Bill's toaster at http://shupp.org/toaster/.

It contains all the things you want, and more:

- Qmail SMTP Mail Server with SMTP-AUTH (Plain, CRAM-MD5), TLS (SSL) support,
and optional Virus Scanner.
- POP3 Server with APOP and SSL support
- IMAP Server with TLS (SSL) support
- WebMail Server
- Quota Support (usage viewable by webmail)
- Autoresponder
- Mailing Lists
- Web-Based Email Administration

The installation is very well documented in a nice copy-'n-paste howto.

Have fun!

Qmail vpopmail Courier

2002-05-16 Thread Christofer Algotsson

Hi list.

I have a Qmail vpopmail system running on Debian/unstable with no problems.
I have both real and virtual users on the system.
For a couple of days I have tried to teach my Courier-IMAP to authenticate viritual
accounts with no luck.

It seems to me that the Coruier-IMAP .deb is compiled with;

(from the debian-patched source)
royce@curlin:~/imap/courier-0.37.3$ grep 'vchk' debian/rules
--without-authvchkpw

However, that module (I think) is needed by Courier's authentication-daemon?

Now.

I added (what I beleve is correct) to /etc/courier/autodaemonrc

authmodulelist=authpam authvchkpw

authpam (for the users with real accounts) and authvchkpw (for the virtuals).

no success. Still pop3 and IMAP (for real users) works perfectley.
Login-name for virtual pop3 and IMAP is the same, username@domain as login-name. (I've
even tried username%domain, with no success).

Re-compiling the package --with-authvchkpw resulted in some error with
/var/lib/vpopmail/etc/lib_deps (wich was not found)... so i touched it and tried
again.. Now i was missing some other libraries, added them.. and the result was
compilation-errors.

I read through goggle and tried to find out by myself, but I believe I'm stuck.

Have anyone got Imap to work with vpop-authentication ?

Please help if you can!

Very best regards,

Christofer

Make sure you compile with vpopmail option turned on and in the
configuration, turn off auth-daemon (as mentioned on the vpopmail mailing
list). I don't use local users so I haven't had to worry about that and
only list authvchkpw as the only auth module used.

 Hope this helps.

Sendmail-vpopmail

2002-03-15 Thread Alex Borges

Hey debisps and whatnot,

I need to migrate some mailboxes in standard mbox format from a solaris
box+sendmail to a Debian qmail+vpopmail solution

I had never seen this sendmail mbox format in this way (until i
stfw) im shure though, that youll immediatly recognize it:

/mnt/[a-n]/[a-z]/user.leftmost-domain-name-component

Say
/mnt/[n-z]/[a-z]/auser.foo (for foo.bar)

This should, of course, be converted to maildir+vmailmgr format which
goes (as you know):

/vmailhome/domains/domain/user/allmailshere

Say
/vmailhome/domains/foo.bar/auser/Maildir/hismails

Now the sole mbox's filename is not enough to build the proper
vpopmail boxes (through a script) now, we are talking of about 15gigs of
mail here and, of course, I need a script to do this.

No problem, i can script that and have many mbox2maildir tools available
(in perl its 10 lines).

The problem is that I dont know in which of sendmail's many files can i
find a direct mapping:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] unixusername (auser.foo)
[EMAIL PROTECTED] unixusername (anotheruser.lee)

Or a way to generate such a thing.if i had this, i could script this
in ten minutes, and have the conversion done in an hour tops. The
confusion arrises from the fact that im not shure if auser.foo and
auser.foo.bar (from say [EMAIL PROTECTED]) are the same guy, or go to
the same domain or whatever!.. if i dont have a table as that explained
above. Let alone thati cant get the endings of their domains
for auser.foo and auser.foo.bar how can i tell which is foo.bar.net
and which is foo.bar ...for that matter, how the hell do i create the
vmailmgr's directories if i dont know (for real) how the domains should
end...

Any ideas from those sendmail gurus out there???

Alex

If you decide to install from source instead, what do you do to convince
apt you did that? If you have a program that needs it as a dependency ?

I just always did a

Apt-get install qmail-src ucspi-tcp-src
Build-qmail;build-ucspi-tcp
Apt-get install vchkpw

I have a working mail server, as for virtual domains, I have not been
able to test that much yet.

Thought up some more...

I always have used qmail (even when I used freebsd, but I love Debian

Is there an easy to learn alternative that has a good deb file? For
most isp's I would assume it would have to support virtual domains.

I've tried using exim, and perhaps it's just me, but I'm not big on
it... I've always like the security angle of qmail too, just not the
license

Why don't you just download it from qmail.org? You will anyway have
