Hi debian-java team,

I'd like us to write a common position statement about the jdk under
the gpl. I think these points should be mentioned:

o This is really a good thing for us because it is now really the GPL
(+Classpath exception), not a MPL like license;

o Sun worked hard to have the jdk in Debian for some time now. (My
POV: not the right way, but they did it, thanks ;-));

o Let be patient. There is still a lot of work for everything to be
 integrated;

 o Debian currently supports java compatible infrastructure on more
   archs than the sun jdk supports. I would like to pick up the ideas
   from the Oldenburg meeting last year for arch dependent packages
   default-jre and default-jdk.

 Yeah. It would be nice to try to figure out where Java run-times for
 the various architectures are going to come from.

 What architectures do you support with the Sun JRE?

currently none; delaying that until the SDK is available ...

I would like to see a dedicated group caring about these
packages. Debian Java maintainers seems a bit broad.

Agree. Debian jdk/jre maintainers or something similar?

[Arnaud Vandyck]
 Any other thoughts?

I believe this is a good idea. I have tried to get someone in the
debian-edu community to write a press release announcing our support
for this license change, but am not sure if anyone will pick up the
ball. I believe it is important to get the press to write about how
this change is received, to encourage other companies to do the same.

Is there a wiki page with the text draft?

Friendly,
