Mine was pretty nice, though much busier than I expected.

"New" main/binary-powerpc packages for kde2.0.1 are on kde.tdyc.com (but only
in my home directory). kdenetwork_2.0.1-0.potato3 had an error (I have now
forgotten where - something about attempting to mv something on top of itself)

I have not yet started on 2.1 (Ok, Ok, I admit it, snow in Dallas, TX is
unusual enough that I was distracted.)

updates

2001-01-02 Thread Ivan E. Moore II
Hi all, I hope your holidays were nice.

ok..so I'm sure some of you are biting your nails waiting for new packages so
here's a status of where we are. I just got back on Sunday and have just
barely caught up on the 3000+ emails (personal) and 1000+ emails (work). I've
updated all my CVS code and have been working on updating/fixing/etc to make
everything compile and work. I've got everything built except a couple
packages which I'm sure will get worked out within the next 24hrs so I should
have new
unstable packages uploaded to Debian during that time frame and potato packages
within 24hrs of that.

for potato users kpilot will be a new addition which I know will be greatly
appreciated. I was kinda kewl uploading it *finally* to Debian before I
ran off on vacation. That was my original ITP for Debian over 2 years ago.
I was happy to close out that bug report finally. :)

anyways...so that goes...

AA support will not be included by default until QT supports it officially
or as close to that as we can. The reason for this is that the patches that
have been provided out there (on KDE lists and all) are *hacks* as put by their
author(s)...they do not have complete support for everything and thus are not
ready for prime time. I have applied the patch to the source so that anyone
who wants to can grab it and build their own local copy with AA support...all
you have to do is add a "-xft" to the configopts line in debian/rules and
then build away. This is only for those running XF 4.0.2...I got the X
maintainer to build X with all the right settings to allow for all of this.
Anything beyond this is up to you and if there are anything else that needs
to be done to make it all work spam the list here so that if it's a packaging
thing we can get that taken care of...this way when QT does support it we
can be ready.

Kmix does not find any devices

2001-01-02 Thread Gerralt de Vree
Hello,

Kmix does not show any mixer devices here. I am using a SoundBlaster 16 card.
I can change my sound volume with artscontrol, but when I exit artscontrol
the sound is back at it's original volume.

I am using kde2.1 on potato now, but the problem was already there in
kde2.0.1. While I did not have the problem using kde2.0 on SuSE 7.0, so I
think it has to do with debian and/or the packing...

For me it is. I only had to downgrade kdm to 2.0.1, because kdm2.1 does not
start. But as far as I have tested it, all other kde2.1 applications are
stable (I once had a crash of konqueror when browsing local).

And kde2.0.1 applications run together with (other) kde2.1 packages, so the
few applications that do not have kde2.1 packages available, can still be
used via kde2.0.1 packages.

kdm2.1 does exit immediately

2001-01-02 Thread Gerralt de Vree
Hello,

I installed kde2.1 for potato with apt-get update and apt-get upgrade and the
following line in sources.list:
deb ftp://kde.tdyc.com/pub/kde potato main crypto optional qt1apps beta

However, after I did that, kdm does not start anymore. I think this is
strange, no errormessage in any logfile or so.
I downgraded kdm to kdm_4%3a2.0.1-0.potato5_i386.deb and now everything
works perfect again (the other kde2.1 packages are still installed, and I see
some nice improvements in kde2.0.1-->kde2.1)

Normally KDE 2.1 should have native support for dockable apps. Extract from
http://www.kde.org/announcements/announce-2.1-beta1.html :

  I haven't tested it yet.

the automatic config is actually distro-specific, as the file
locations are: debian has a /etc/kde2/kdmrc. default is
/usr/share/confic/kdmrc, iirc.

I can't really comment on this (thus cc'ed to list). But sometimes it happens
that a not yet released version is even more stable than the latest stable
version.

>From my point of view stable KDE releases do not compare very well to stable
kernel or Debian releases in terms of the number of bugs the user sees.

But an important feature (KPilot) might justify to use a version with a higher
bug density.

Escpecially for the URL of the mailing list posting, which says that kpilot is

I am using kde2.1-beta on potato. I did not compile it myself, but used this
line in /etc/apt/sources.list:

deb ftp://kde.tdyc.com/pub/kde potato main crypto optional qt1apps beta

This last entry (beta) is for kde 2.1. If you leave the beta away, you only
get kde2.0.1.

KDE 2.1 for potato

2001-01-02 Thread Rainer Dorsch

Hi,

I am wondering, if somebody has compiled KDE 2.1 for potato. I initially tried
to compile kdepim2.1 (which includes kpilot) for kde 2.0.1, but although I was
able to compile and run it, stability was pretty poor. Thus I would like to
try the complete version 2.1 and check if it works better.

Does anybody know, if there are still bugfixes for 2.0.1 done or if all the
energy goes now in 2.1. I saw several segmentation faults of KDE applications
in the 2.0.1 debian packages for potato (a popular one is the segfaulting
konquerer during logout).

Thanks.

Rainer.

Integrating pon/poff with kde.

2001-01-02 Thread Dale P. Smith
Greetings List.

On my home system, I use pon/poff to connect to my isp. I have a
windowmaker dock app (wmpp ??) that knows how to use pon/poff. I have
my wife and kids using this. I'm experimenting with kde (this is a
potato box btw) and I don't really like kppp. It doesn't work with my
serial card anyway, no options for /dev/ttyR[0-7] (I have a rocketport
octacable).

I have made some icons that just call pon or poff. This works, but
there is no feedback that the connection has been made.

Is there a way to run a wmaker dock app in the kpanel?

Is there some k application that uses pon/poff and shows the state of
the connection? (changes color or something)

Is there a way to wrap up(with tcl/tk, python or whatever) some shell
scripts (or any arbitrary executable) into an application that run in
the taskbar (like kmoon or that clipboard thingy)?

Thanks!
  -Dale
