kde.debian.net and mirroring
Ok...well my friend who's hosting kde.tdyc.com/kde.debian.net has put in his notice and is leaving the job...and thus the box has to find a new home. So this leaves a few options... the site is mirrored out to several sites now so it's not like it's a big hit to everyone..just means people will have to change their sources file and point to a mirror. So...I'm not sure exactly where I"m going to shove the box yet...I can host the files at one place..but it can't be publically accessable...I might be able to allow mirrors to hit it tho...I'm trying to research this. The other option is that one of the mirror sites would volunteer to become the master site. This would require allowing myself and Rick Cook access to the box to upload and manage the files we upload. I'm not sure how much longer the box will be around...probably at least till sometime next week. I'm working on getting the rest of my updates uploaded then I'll mirror it off to my backup site...and ISO's will also be made during that time. so the data is not getting lost...it just may be on hold. :) Ivan -- Ivan E. KDE 2.1 loads but no apps will run
OK, here is what is happening now; KDE 2.1 (potato) loads & runs but none of the applications on the task-bar will run. I do not get error message then but occasionally I will get: "There was an error loading the module The diagnostic is:" And the top of the window says "KDE Control Module" I've tried everything that I can think of but I cannot figure it out. Any ideas ?? -thanks James

More KAB Problems
OK, I had just recovered from my earlier expostulations about the state of KAB when I realized there were more things to say. I have entered the name of this list in KAB. Then quit KAB and reopened it to verify that this list is in the address book. When I click on the blue ellipsis to the right of the "To:" field, the address book (or KMail's interpretation of it) pops up with nothing in it. It's beyond me. I'd allow dragging of the e-mail address in KAB (at the bottom of the dialog) to the To field in KMail. As far as I know, this isn't possible. Someone please correct me. -- Robert Tilley [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The latest version of apt allows one to have multiple apt lines and pull from specific pools... aptget install kdebase/unstable for example...(not sure if that's the exact command line...) so that's one option, the other is to go and download the packages directly out of the pool...my personal favorite is to run unstable..as it's far better than testing. KAB Problems
Adding an entry to the KAB database is fairly intuitive with pop-up help but the process of adding or editing an e-mail address is not. I add the debian-kde lists to KAB, enter the name through the Name tab. I then switch to the Contact tab. Finding I need to click on the Edit email address tab is fairly obvious but requiring me to click on a camoflauged square which is the same color as its surroundings and is only deleanated by a thin black line is most _non-obvious_. Regardless of the inefficiency of the dialog design, I achieve my goal after a few days of thought. Suggestions: Add a title so that a newbie to the wonderful KDE 2.1 (like myself) can discern what to do in a glance. The button row could read as follows: "Add Address", "OK", "Apply" and "Cancel", then the other buttons on the side to manipulate the list. Make the dialog a bit wider (some people actually do have "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"-type addresss) and every fits in quite nicely. If you're offended by such non-geek dialog styling and prefer cryptic designs, go code a skinning module for KMail and create your own skin. P.S.Yes, I know the programmers solution -- add a new button that calls the procedures called by that camoed button -- but I'm not intimate with KMail source code. -- Robert Tilley [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Objective Evidence Konqueror Slows With More Bookmarks
I did as a kind user suggested and moved my bookmarks.xml file then deleted the original in the Konqueror folder. Size of bookmarks.xml Time to Open Konqueror (approximately) - 6.5K3 seconds 951K11 seconds I think some work needs to be done in this area. I know I am not the only web junkie on this list. I've given bookmarks.xml a cursory examination with an editor and know that it can be compressed easily, but even that is not an answer. What is it about Netscape (the only application I am really accustomed to) that allows it to open quickly, regardless of bookmark file size? It can't be the simpler syntax of the file (HTML vs. XML) as the two are almost identical in structure. Any ideas? -- Robert Tilley [EMAIL PROTECTED]

KDE 2.1 on DEBIAN vs SLACKWARE. see the difference? anyone?
I'm running X 4.0.2 and KDE 2.1 on slack and debian. Truetype fonts are recognized w/o a problem. Default installation gives me the following screens: http://www.winwood.net/~tmd/deb_kde.gif http://www.winwood.net/~tmd/slack_kde.gif fonts are _the same_ (helvetica and courier), however they look totally different on both distros. how come? how can i make deb's KDE look the same? :) thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I tried installing Brahms from Ivan's KDE2.0 list, but this all but killed my KDE, as it loaded the new qt2.3 libs. This is a known issue that has received lots of discussion on the list. Now that my desktop was gone, I did an apt-get dist-upgrade with Ivan's source.list included. Thsi installed loads of stuff, and now I've got a brand new KDE2.1 desktop back!!! I've only just started using it, so I have no feedback at the moment, but I'll keep you posted. I do know that this fixes the problem with konqueror in Progeny not opening http. Other than that I'll just have to see how everything works out. > We've always planned to do something Debian doesn't: provide an > "updates" apt source to add updated packages to a stable system. > Some of the first things to go into updates will likely be > updated GNOME, KDE, and Mozilla packages. I would recommend using Ivan's sources for the KDE updates, as I think they are very well packaged and Ivan has done an excellent job bringing everything together with the latest libs and tools. I guess I'm lost on this issue. It is clear that Sun won't move. And the bank is only focusing on the f*#?ing Microsoft IE. I don't even get full support for Netscape on Linux. This is a proof that monopoly is not helping the enduser but is keeping him as a hostage to make even more money. I think this is a difference between java 1.1 and 1.2/1.3. I've had the same messages with sun 1.3.0, blackdown 1.3.0 and sun 1.3.1 beta1 on some applets with konqueror AND mozilla 0.8, so this seems to be a problem in the java .class files of the applet. The only way to fix this is to force Sun to get compatible with netscape's jvm (which will not happen) or to force your bank to make the applet work with netscape6/mozilla/konqueror. (The online banking applet of my bank doesn't work because of java compatibility issues, too) Java: Compile once for every java release or struggle everywhere... -- wfg, chris
