Trying to circle in on bug, assistance needed

2001-09-21 Thread Volker Schlecht
A few weeks ago, I reported bug #108698 against konqueror, which has
been tagged unreproducible by Ivan. I have since waited for 2.2.1 to
be released, hoping that they would silently fix it.

Apparently they didn't, though - so since my system seems to be the
only one where the problem occurs, I decided to try and find the
problem myself, which is as follows:

HTML preview in general seems to be broken. When I have it enabled and
look at a directory containing a couple of HTML files, CPU load goes
up to 100% for a 1-2 minutes, and X completely freezes. For brief
period each two minutes or so, X wakes up again, giving me the chance
to press the back button to get out of the directory in question
again. If I don't X will freeze again for 1-2 Minutes. Running it for
a couple of hours overnight will finally display all the HTML previews.

The bug report only mentions viewing the contents of .tar.gz's,
however currently, using konqueror 2.2.1 from unstable (on an
otherwise woody system) that happens with normal directories also.

I have checked bugs.kde.org to see if such a problem had been already
reported, but I couldn't find any mention of it.

Does anyone here have the same problem, or any suggestions by what it
could be caused?

thanks for your help!

Volker

Just tested on directory with 8 html files, no problem. Took a couple
seconds to generate previews, but nothing serious, and immediately cpu usage
dropped back to normal. Just tried with a .tar.gz file as well, worked even
faster than I expected. This is on a pii 350, nothing special (oh, and I'm
straight sid). Sorry :-)

For an unknown reason it works again: I deleted kde-related dot and temp
files (but not the .kde dir) and it didn't work. After some negative retries
(restarting X, with and without using kdm) it suddenly worked again.
Strange, but it is enough for me :-)

Re: KDE 2.2.1 Dependencies

2001-09-21 Thread Andy Zbikowski \(Zibby\)
There's no way you will be able to install Woody or Sid KDE packages on
Potato. I even tried compiling the new packages on my Progeny machine and
they wouldn't build.

In the short run, it seems the best way to get 2.2.1 on your Potato or
Progeny systems is to build from source. It's actually not that bad once
you have all the build dependiencies installed.

Just setenv KDEDIR /usr/local/kde-2.2.1 (csh) and add
/usr/local/kde2.2.1/bin to your path.

So far my build notes look like this:
kdelibs: ./configure --disable-cups
cups support doesn't like to build agnist the cups libs in
Progeny. Things work fine without.
kdebase: ./configure --without-gl
Some GL stuff doesn't want to build. No big loss, most
machines I'm bouilding this for have POS video anyway.

smb ioslave accents

2001-09-21 Thread Macolu
Hello everybody !

I have a problem with the smb ioslave :

I can browse OK.
The accents are printed correctly.

but.

when I try to open a file or a directory with an accent in it name, konqueror
tells me that the file or directory doesn't exist..

The problem doesn't come from the server, because I can open these files / go
in these directories without problem on others computers (running on Windows
9x)

Installed packages (but this problem has always been happening..) :

ii smbclient 2.2.1a-10
ii samba-common 2.2.1a-10

and all the kde packages are 2.2.1-1

If someone can help me.

Thanks a lot
