Re: apt 0.5.4: preferences file

2001-10-13 Thread Bruce Miller
Jens, Thanks for the ideas. In fact, today, I did a Google search on
``/etc/apt/preferences" and got many of the same results. My
German is not as good as my Scandinavian languages (I did post-
graduate study in Sweden and later married a Norwegian-American
whom I met while she was majoring in Scandinavian studies) so I
read the articles in English, French and Danish before venturing
into the German.

The other problem was that the Google results suggested that the
apt_preferences system appears to have taken the developers
some time to debug. There were a lot of ``unintended
consequences" during the process. More recently, a number of
user messages picked up by the Google search seem to have had
trouble understanding the process. I am not surprised. I did too.

The following appears to accomplish exactly what I am looking for --
namely to update packages downloaded from testing with testing
updates and to update packages downloaded from unstable with
unstable updates but not to transfer anything from testing to
unstable without explicit user intervention.

Package: *
Pin: release a=testing
Pin-Priority: 777

Package: *
Pin: release a=unstable
Pin-Priority: 333

Thanks again for the help.

Thanks, making the directory with the same permissions as /var/lib/cddb/ got
this working, seems the problem is solved, except for the fact that I have
make directories for every genre I ever use... *sigh*. Well, thanks anyway.

Thanks a bunch for the answer, and I'll keep that message in the
special place that I have for special,
hold-your-mouth-in-just-the-right-way solutions to problems :)

Like my other message said, it magically worked like the third time I
tried it, but I'm certain your message will help other upgrade
problems I'll have in the future.

Thanks again for the answer,

Re: Failed upgrade to KDE 2.2.1

2001-10-13 Thread Oliver Johns
Dear Brian,

I'm not sure about this, but I think that the problem is that some
files have moved from one package to another one in the transition
from 2.1.2 to 2.2.1. Thus, from your information below, it appears
that /usr/lib/kde2/libkcm_screensaver.la is now in kdebase-libs
whereas it used to be in kscreensaver. Since you still have the old
kscreensaver installed when you try to install kdebase-libs, you get
an overwrite conflict.

The solution that worked for me is first to do
apt-get -d -t unstable install kde
which will just download everything for you. You probably have
everything already, so this step may not be needed.

Then, cd to /var/cache/apt/archives and do
dpkg --force-overwrite --install kdebase-libs_4%3a2.2.1.0-1_i386.deb
This will install kdebase-libs regardless of its overwriting a file
from the old version of kscreensaver.

You'll have to do that for several files, but you can pick them out
of your apt-get response below.

When the bad ones are resolved, then you can do
apt-get -t unstable install kde
again, and everything should go through correctly.

Hope this is a clue, at least.

Looks like Clark's Law strikes again. I have no idea what happened,
but I did apt-get -f and apt-get -t unstable a few times, and it
magically worked :)

So, to sum it up, I don't know how or why it worked this time, as I
didn't change anything, but I'm running 2.2.1 now.

Sorry to have bothered you...

Failed upgrade to KDE 2.2.1

2001-10-13 Thread Brian Button

Well, I had KDE 2.1.2 installed, and I couldn't leave well enough
alone :( I just had to get KDE 2.2.1, just for fun. I shoulda known
better :)

I thought I read around this list, and a couple others who had
successfully done this, so it couldn't be that hard, right?? So what
happened?

My /etc/apt/preferences files looks like:

Package: *
Pin: release a=testing

Package: *
Pin: release a=unstable

I've already updated everything to what just showed up in testing with
apt-get update. Now, with the new apt-get, I do

apt-get -t unstable install kde

and I get an error installing stuff. Here is the output of the above
command:

apt 0.5.4: preferences file

2001-10-13 Thread Bruce Miller
I put in a lot of effort yesterday studying the man pages for apt and
apt_preferences as well as the APT HOWTO which is buried deep
in the Debian website.

To no avail. apt turned up its nose at my feeble attempt to write a
preferences file. I usually beat my head against the brick wall until I
figure out obscure documentation but on this one, the patience isn't
forthcoming.

Rather than ask help, if someone has a smoothly functioning
/etc/apt/preferences file which they would be willing to share,
please e-mail it to me ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) and I will use it
to figure out where I went wrong on the concepts.

I had the same problem. Solution: create the genre dir by hand and it should
work.
