kmail setup

2001-11-29 Thread Kari Ruohonen
KMail manual says that the accounts can be set under the "network" tab.
However, I can't find this tab. Where is it located? Can setup be edited
directly? If so, what is the proper file?

I am running Debian testing and kde 2.2.2 and kmail is 2.2.2-1.

Thanks, Kari

Thank you. I got it running now with the notes you attached. Think the
problem was, that my prefix directory /usr/kde2.2.2 wasn't in $PATH as first.

We are very close to freeze. I'm very impatiently waiting for word on
crypto in main so that I can get rid of the -crypto packages. I have a
slowly increasing list of fixes/changes which will be uploaded within
the next week...

here are some things that I'm doing...

   *  lots of build cleanup
   * lots of dependency cleanup (Moving alot of the Recommends to Suggests)
   * crypto build in main packages (pending...)
   * Xinerama support for i386 only
   * final sync with upstream...tho there hasn't been any changes yet...

is there any pressing things that needs to be done to the packages that
are currently in sid? Patches, submissions, last minute simple changes?

Speak now or forever hold your piece. In a few weeks it will be RC bug
fixes only.

slowly going through them but I'd appreciate if others could help with this

Thanks but my KMail does not have a Settings menu item. I see one that has
"No text!" on it and contains two times "Configure filters". The KMail

In kmail menu: Settings -> Configure kmail ... In the dialog that
comes up 'Network' is the second item on the left hand side.

Hello,

thanks for the many advices I got, but no success yet.

I went to the linux.com site and checked all the stuff

- java is enabled
- java script is enables
- plugins are enables
- I scanned for plugins

but

- the flash plugin is not listed
- and does not work either
- whereas e.g. the pdf plugin from acrobat is listed and works.

It works in mozilla and galeon out of the box.

Thanks.

It sounds like your kmail installation is messed up.
Try to --purge remove kmail and then install it again.

Before purging and reinstalling, I'd be tempted to remove
~/.kde/share/config/kmailrc It is created on the first time kmail is
started and recreated should it be removed. If the situation persists, then
I'd move to the purge/reinstall cycle.

On Thursday, 29. November 2001 00:18 Wilco Greven wrote:

Yes! Thanks for that hint, kded seems to be the disk-access trigger.

The basic situation is unchanged: when I start any Kde application
(let's say konsole) it starts also kded. When I kill kded the disk
access stops. Surprisingly I can continue working without kded running,
but I don't feel good doing so.

I have disabled all installed kded modules by moving them away from
$KDEDIR/share/services/kded/ without success.

>From README.kded:
|Example kdedrc file with default values:
|[General]
|PollInterval=500
|NFSPollInterval=5000
|HostnamePollInterval=5000
|CheckSycoca=true
|CheckUpdates=true
|CheckHostname=true

I have modified all of these values in my ~/.kderc (that should be my
local incarnation of kderc. Correct?) and manually started kbuildsycoca
after editing, but the changes have *no* effect.

Additionally I have stopped the automounter and the NFS-related
daemons. No change.

One piece of new information: When I start kbuildsycoca of konsole from
a command line I get an error message:

|[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ kbuildsycoca
|Warning: kbuildsycoca is unable to register with DCOP.
|Property 'Export' is defined multiple times (KOfficeFilterDialog)
|Property 'Import' is defined multiple times (KOfficeFilterDialog)

What can this tell me?

Following the idea that the above messages have something to do with
koffice I did apt-get remove koffice. No change.

Hmm...somehow

$MOZILLA_HOME/plugins

/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

to make konqueror find the flash plugin. Now it appears in netscape plugins,
but still does not work (when viewing www.flash.com).

Building QT on Debian

Was attempting to build QT 2.3.2 for Debian (actually Progeny Debian that
we've done modifaction to, like a number of Woody/Sid backports) the qt build

Could be that it's a but in 2.3.2 as 2.3.1 is what's currently in sid. Maybe
I'll drop down a version and see what happens.

Oh, and to answer the "Why not use the debs?" question:

That would involve pushing out new package selections ot a good number of
machines, and gets things out of sync with the Solaris boxen. We're trying to
add qt to our nfs mounted software for all our supported Unix platforms
(well, maybe not Irix. :)

Anyway, thanks for any hints/guesses/stabs in the dark.

Ben:

I had a case locally during an ISP foobar that kmail was slow. Every day, it
just seemed slower. I was positive it had to be a DNS lookup issue.
Everyone else on the lan had instant downloads except me! Finally, looking
over the 'network' tab, I found the oops! I hand unchecked the box "delete
mail from server" since I was using two email programs at one point. I had
several thousand emails that kmail would have to sift through each check. It
crashed kmail the first time it deleted the old mails, but then it was fine :)

Does that mean you use XFree86 3.3.6 (or so, not sure about it...)? But no
matter what X-version you're running, do NOT (and I mean by no means!) use
the sis-chipset-accelleration (which is in SVGA-server, I think)!!! It does
not work due to some problems with LCD. Initialize the VESA (again NOT the
SiS!!!) Framebuffer-device at bootup (kernel must support it and lilo needs
to be configured the right way...) and use the Xfb, the framebuffer-X-server.
This should work (with X 4.1.0 and lower X 4 versions it does, I am currently
writing from a laptop with the same SiS-Chipset...;-)

Good Luck!

I'm running a server with Debian woody, and have both Matlab versions
5.2 and 6 installed. The only problem is that the GUI of Matlab 6 is
a little buggy and locks up once in awhile. I think this is a Java
problem. I don't know if this would be any different with say Red
Hat. Also we find that for a lot of code, Matlab 5.2 is significantly
faster than 6.

By the way, if you've got a large disk, then you can copy all the
documentation to the hard disk and modify the matlab paths file (don't
remember which file it is). The installation doesn't do this for you.

Are you behind a proxy? And you're sure that kcookiejar is set to accept all

Panel dies after X/KDE upgrade

2001-11-29 Thread Chris Mayes
Hello, all.

Today, I resolved to fix the GTK font issue that has been plaguing my
install of dia for about a month... After trying various workarounds as
suggested by various sources (none of which solved the problem,) I decided
to try to upgrade from XFree86 4.0.3 to 4.1.0.

Miraculously, this solved my dia problem. Unfortunately, my kpanel now dies
(twice) upon startup. The panel begins painting itself during the initial
startup, disappears, tries to paint itself again during the app restoration
stage, and dies again. This, of course, does not necessarily have anything
to do with my upgrading X, but that was the major preceding event to the
current symptom.

What is the manual command to start a panel from an xterm? The 'kpanel'
binary does not appear to exist on my filesystem (or at least the locate db
has missed it...) Where should I look for error reports? I didn't see
anything promising in syslog, kdm.log or messages. Basically, how do i go
about diagnosing and fixing this problem?

My stats:

Debian (mainly) Woody
Kernel 2.4.12
kdebase 2.2.1.0-6
xfree86-base 4.1.0-9
xserver-xfree86 4.1.0-9

TIA,

-Chris

Yes, I have been using both matlab 6.0 and 6.1 on dual PII and dual
Athlon without any problem. I just ran the install script that comes
with the cd and install in /usr/local/matlab6.x :) I have woody/sid on
both machines, incase that you would like to know.

Actually, the only thing it stops is running any app's I create WITH Kylix
outside of Kylix and they only depend on one lib, libqtintf.so.2.2.4, but,
since I don't know Pascal that well, I think I'll stick with kdevelop.

On a related note, I've got kdevelop2.0 installed and for the most part I
quite like it's look and feel. I tried to create a KDE based app, not knowing
anything about widget programming, but using the create wizard. After I got
all the kde-devel installed and re-configured kdevelop to reconise everything
was installed, I used the wizard to create a blank KDE app. Everything went
fine, until I tried to compile the blank app. The build complained:

I've got /usr/lib/libjpeg.a but what is libjpeg.la? I can not find any
reference to .la libs anywhere? Is there something wrong with kdevelop's
settings? I thought libs were either .a for static or .so for shared. But
then I also screwed up my libs so I guess that shows how much I know about
programming.

Ivan, I am back with my list of "nits" for your consideration. Same old
stuff...klisa doesnt work properly plus a suggestion on the initial
(startup) wallpaper on the main kde screen. All of these suggestions &
nits apply to both the ALPHA and i386 arches. All are confirmed on the
most recent packages from SID updated as of yesterday, 28 Nov 01.

Problem #1. Clicking on "Local Network" will only find the "localhost"
and no other network hosts. This remains as such even after configuring
klisa in Control Center--> Network --> Lan Browsing. Investigation
reveals that when klisa is configured this way, it will ALWAYS save the
lisarc file in /etc/lisarc. However, the klisa initscript in
/etc/init.d/klisa is set to read its configuration info from
/etc/kde2/lisarc. Therefore the updated local config information in
/etc/lisarc is never read. This problem appeared in KDE 2.2.X, and was
not present in KDE 2.1.2.

FIX to #1. There are probably better ways to do this, but I moved the
supplied /etc/kde2/lisarc file out of the way and created a symlink to
the /etc/lisarc file and re-started klisa. It will now "see" the other
computers on the LAN. I tried the symlink the other way (from
/etc/lisarc --> /etc/kde2/lisarc) but when I configured the network "Lan
Browsing" again, the symlink was removed and a new /etc/lisarc file was
created.

Problem #2. Clicking on the (+) sign beside the "Local Network" icon
will produce this error: "Cannot find parent item lan://localhost/ in
the tree. Internal Error". Blind investigation here have revealed the
"URL" line in the
/.kde/share/apps/konqueror/dirtree/remote/lan.desktop file is set
to "URL=lan:/". Changing this to read "URL=lan://localhost/" will
restore normal behavior and clicking on the (+) sign beside the "Local
Network" icon will expand to a sub-tree of all the LAN comuters found.
This problem appeared in KDE 2.2.X, and was not present in KDE 2.1.2.
BTW, I have found similar bug reports on the KDE bug list from other
distros (SuSE,Mandrake). This would indicate this may be more of a KDE
"generic" problem than just a Debian version problem.

FIX to #2. For all accounts that already have a /.kde/ directory,
the local sysadmin will have to manually edit the
/.kde/share/apps/konqueror/dirtree/remote/lan.desktop file and
make this change to make the system work correctly.

HOWEVER, for new accounts and/or new installs of KDE where there is NOT
an existing .kde directory, if the
/usr/share/apps/konqueror/dirtree/remote/lan.desktop file contains this
edit, then it will be applied to each new KDE setup created. This
change also will allow deletion of old ~/.kde directories and
re-generation of a corrected lan.desktop file automatically. This is
something to consider for the final package if a better solution is not
found.

PROBLEM #3. The initial background is set to display the "Debian.jpg"
wallpaper, however this wallpaper is never shown when first starting up
KDE and going through the new setup wizard. I can later get it to
display by first turning off the wallpaper setting (none) in Control
Center --> Look & Feel --> Background and applying that new config, THEN
redoing the above and selecting the Debian.jpg wallpaper and applying it
again. This same thing has shown up on 4 different computers here over
multiple installs (> 6) of KDE 2.2.2 .

FIX to #3. (Suggested). Since the wallpaper is not currently being
shown anyway, why not just set the default wallpaper to "none". This
will possibly save some memory for users will limited memory resources.

Submitted for your consideration.

Cheers,
-Don Spoon-

Minor knit, I've notice that in the last week with
Konsole, that using any console apps that use the
whole Konsole screen (like nano for instance) now
leave the cursor at the top of the screen on exit.

Maybe there is a setting somehere to alter this and
the default has simply changed but it's quite an
obnoxious and unexpected behaviour... ie; if the
console screen is already full of output then when
editing a file with nano, upon exit the cursor is
at the top of the screen with all manner of previous
screen gunk still on the screen.

Seeing no else (that I've seen) has commented about
this then it might be a setable option somewhere ?

This appears to have been fixed in the latest upload to unstable (2.2.2-3).
