I'm not confident enough to stay on the bleeding edge, but Debian get rather 'blunt' as it approaches freeze. Also, I'm finding more and more things I need more up-to-date than Debian provides. If it weren't for the cost of my bandwidth, I'd love to play with SGL, but I'm finding the limitations of Debian-verified software getting old. I've allready installed Accelereated-X for my video card, after I fould that compiling and installing XFree86 4.2.0 still didn't give me the 3D acceleration I wanted. > If you are very worried about > bandwidth, wait for a couple weeks *after* the intial kde3 packages come > out, then install them, as us early-adopters will have found most of the > bugs by then, so the "release a whole new kde system every couple > days"-cycle that occurs everytime something like this goes down will have > calmed down to reasonableness, and you can skip all of it (go to the head > of the class!). > Thats the way I usually go, but I'm getting very itchy, and my current KDE2 and a half is rather buggy, but for some reason, full KDE2.2 just won't work on my system? I'll probably change back after te freeze and the DKE3 stuff has calmed down a bit. kde screen saver
Does anyone know where in config file there is to turn screen saver off? Does anyone know where a decent kde manual is on kde internals on the web. Sorry if this is out of place. If you are careful about what you apt-get (most people don't need even 1/3rd of the "full" kde install), you should be able to get by using the Debian Way. Having said that, I compiled kde3 locally following the kde2+3 tutorial on women.kde.org, and am enjoying the hell out of it :-) However, I plan on rm - -fR'ing my /usr/local/kde3 as soon as .debs are available, as apt-get makes my life so much easier. For instance, rather than hacking around to get kdm working with kd3, I reverted to startx. Several kde2 programs just stopped working, until I munged around with my ld.so.config, and some still don't work (browsing documentation in kdevelop2.0 krashes instantly, I think it's trying to embed the khtml part from kde3). Hopefully these types of issues will be cleared up by our faithful debian devs, so that you can happily run kde2 & 3 apps side-by-side. To sum up: it you plan on maintaining your machine through debian via apt-*, wait. If you simply want the bleeding-edge, compile from cvs and write a script to upgrade you every couple days. If you are very worried about bandwidth, wait for a couple weeks *after* the intial kde3 packages come out, then install them, as us early-adopters will have found most of the bugs by then, so the "release a whole new kde system every couple days"-cycle that occurs everytime something like this goes down will have calmed down to reasonableness, and you can skip all of it (go to the head of the class!). These sources also include the qt-rsync? which seems to be a complete qt installation? I enjoy KDE2 but am itching to play with KDE3. One problem I do have with my sources is the kde-i18n-3 seems to be corrupt on my DVD. Do I need this, or is it just for languages other than english? As for building, what is the best way to build this so it does not conflict with my existing QT/KDE2 installation? I like the peace the .deb's provide me, but I find that Debian gets so out-of-date upto the freeze. I've allready built and installed X4.2.0 from sources, and then added Accelerated-X for proper 3D support for my 3DLabs GVX1 board. I think with pay-per-minute Internet access, building from source would be cheaper than fetching .deb's from the 'net. But, should I use debian tools to build .deb's, or jsut build and install the packages to, say, /usr/local/* to prevent corrupting my installation? Thanks for all the help and keep up the great work! Think of the number of users of KDE under Debian, multiply by the number of times they log in each day, multiply by the number of days in a year, multiply by 5 seconds, it becomes a significant amount of time... there must be some "acceptable" method of getting /tmp/.ICE-unix owned by root.root - I'm currently still a fan of an /etc/init.d script that creates the directory - I've not thought of anything nicer yet. Compiling KDE 2.2.2 on Woody
I already done it, and this is the better KDE I have ever had (thanks Chris for your efforts, they payed). Since I'm new to the Debian build system, I would like to be reassured on a couple of thing :-) kdelibs-crypto, after configure: You're missing libpcre. You're missing libxml2 2.4.8 or later. You're missing libxslt 1.0.6 or later. Is this normal? The relevant parts of the code are already included in kdelibs3? This package is actually orphaned, so I installed the original binary, in the dubt. A real problem was for me the following warnings: dh_shlibdeps -a -l`pwd`/debian/kdelibs3/usr/lib: `pwd`/debian/libarts/usr/lib: `pwd`/debian/libkmid/usr/lib: `pwd`/debian/kdelibs3-cups/usr/lib dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: format of dcopserver.so not recognized dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: format of kbuildsycoca.so not recognized dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: format of kconf_update.so not recognized dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: format of kcookiejar.so not recognized dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: format of kded.so not recognized dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: format of kio_http_cache_cleaner.so not recognized dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: format of kio_uiserver.so not recognized dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: format of klauncher.so not recognized dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: format of libcupsdconf.so not recognized dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: format of knotify.so not recognized dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: format of knotify.so not recognized Here I really cannot spot what is going on, due to inexperience...
