broken packages for 3.1
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, have just grabbed the packages from Karolina for kde3.1 from here: http://wh9.tu-dresden.de/kde3/karolina/ linked off here: http://mypage.bluewin.ch/kde3-debian/ I have a couple of probs with the packages: Menus are named No text! in kmail and konqueror has double up menu items and double icons. (see links) http://www.performancemagic.com/~greg/kde/kmail_menu_probs.png http://www.performancemagic.com/~greg/kde/konq_menu_probs.png Am running unstable deb (updated late last week). Am not sure who is the package maintainer, or how to report bugs in 3rd party packages. Can someone please help on contacting the correct people. This particular problem appears to creep up every now and then. I fixed it a long time ago. Why does it reoccur? There should be a link /usr/share/config - /etc/kde3/ installed by the package libkdecore-data And there should be the file /etc/kde3/ui/ui_standards.rc installed by libkdeui-data. It should have size 5607 I can only suspect either that I have left holes, so that old KDE packages can remain on the system, or that the debian package system does not always update all files that it should. Make sure that apt-get does not complain, meaining that a apt-get -f install does nothing. Sometimes it is possible to muck up the package database with dpkg. If apt-get does not complain, and you still have the problem, you can send me a dpkg -l list, if you want to, since I would like to see what packages are installed on a non-working system. -- Karolina
apt (dpkg?) problem with Karolina's debs
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, when I 'apt-get update' I get the following errors with deblines for Karolinas KDE3.1rc in my sources.lst: [...] Hit http://wh9.tu-dresden.de ./ Packages Hit http://wh9.tu-dresden.de ./ Release Reading Package Lists... Error! E: Dynamic MMap ran out of room E: Error occured while processing knotes (NewVersion1) E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. Interestingly enough I get errors for different packages, sometimes for packages not in KDE, depending on which other lines I comment out. I never get errors without one of the lines deb http://wh9.tu-dresden.de/kde3/karolina ./ deb http://shakti.ath.cx/debian/kde3.1 ./ deb http://shakti.ath.cx/debian/kde3.1-apps ./ deb http://shakti.ath.cx/debian/support ./ , though. Is my apt/dpkg setup broken, or am I doing semthing wrong here? I mostly use woody. Replace broken mouse button w/ keyboard combination(?)
Hi, this might not be KDE specific, but maybe someone can help anyway. I have a laptop and the right mouse button is broken, so I wonder if it is possible to make some combination (like Ctrl + Left mouse button or maybe the unused windows/winmenu key) send the signal as if the right mouse button is pressed. Anything like that possible? Thanks in advance, ~sth PS: xfree86 3 w/ svga-server, debian sid

I had the same problem. Copied ui_standards.rc from another machine (it was missing on my pc) and now it works :-) ~sth
Instructions for Karolina's KDE3.1 packages?
Can I migrate from KDE 3.0.x directly to Karolina's KDE 3.1.x packages directly using an 'apt-get upgrade', or should I purge all my KDE packages like so when upgrading from KDE 2.2.x to KDE 3.0.x? I have read past articles implying that I can just do a direct upgrade, but I would like to confirm. What is the best way to upgrade to KDE 3.1? Are there any stability issues I should be aware of other than the obvious security hole which kept it from officially being released earlier? Thanks. -- Scott C. Mystery of the vanishing session
DISAPPEARING SESSIONS I am running KDE 2 (2.2.2) on Debian/testing, and I have also built KDE 3.1 (c. rc5) from CVS and installed it in local directories. So my kdm is from the standard distribution. I have added a kde3 session type to it to invoke the kde 3 installation. The problem I have is that session type keeps disappearing--not every time I log out or shutdown, but intermittently. I originally created the session type by editing some control files; the first time it disappeared I used kcontrol's login manager settings to add the session. Either way, it sometimes disappears. (The kde3 invoking script I wrote for the session to use doesn't disappear, but the kde3 in the session drop downs does disappear). Since I thought the setup might be somewhat Debian specific, I thought I'd ask here. One theory that has occurred to me is that it may disappear whenever my last logout is from a kde3 session. I typically run kde2 in one virtual terminal and kde3 in another. Does anyone see any way the kde3 logout could overwrite the settings kde2 uses? Note that my kde3 build is standard, not via debian/rules. Another possibility is that something about apt-get dist-upgrade resets the session list, since I just did one of those before the session disappeared. RELUCTANT SHUTDOWN Another peculiarity I've noted is that since I added a second virtual terminal in /etc/kde2/kdm/Xservers I can not shutdown without first letting the second virtual terminal display its login screen. In other words, if I just work in vt7 and then logout and shutdown, I get switched to vt1 (as usual). But no shutdown happens til I manually switch to vt8 and the login screen appears. At that point I get switched back to vt1 and watch as the shutdown proceeds. Anybody know what's up with that? Thanks.
Reducing KDE 3.1's memory footprint.
Yesterday, I picked up Karolina's KDE 3.1RC5 debs (Thanks, Karolina!), and noticed that KDE's memory footprint went up a hair. Not abnormally, but since I'm running on a machine with only 128MB of RAM, I'm wondering what things I can do to keep memory usage down so my system doesn't end up thrashing too much. Doug
