Re: Woody/KDE3.1RC7 debs : Screensavers Report
Welcome to the world of jwz's xscreensaver. Yup I didn't count them but I'll accept 160 ... And ALL of them work for me from the kde control panel in both the little display window and using Test for a fullscreen view (except for some esoteric screensavers like vidwhack and webcollage - both of which I'd like to get working). The appearance in the control panel was what got me going on xscreensaver and prompted my comments earlier. And yes there are other fish to fry! However jwz's xscreensaver is enough of a reason to run linux!!! Michael On Monday 27 January 2003 at 7:47 pm, Nick Boyce wrote: ... > BTW: does everyone else have ~160 screensavers ??? Hmm .. I don't have any xscreensaver-foo package installed (nothing against those screensavers, I'm just concentrating on sorting out the KDE native screensavers), and I have exactly the same symptom - approx 9 out of 10 of the ~160 (!) listed screensavers do absolutely nothing. When I first noticed this I was using stock Woody Xfree 4.1.0, but I've now switched to the Xfree 4.2.1 for Woody mentioned by Ralf (in the "Need advice for mixed Woody/Sid system" thread on 26.Jan.03) and it has made no difference - problem still there. I don't think it's a good situation, but nor is it very important, and I guess there are much bigger fish to fry for now. BTW: does everyone else have ~160 screensavers ??? That's like a _lot_ .. Re: Only root can play sound
It would be even better, if someone talked to the adduser package maintainer, and have adduser package installation ask if you want people to be added to the 'audio' group by default or something to that effect, but this is the wrong list for that discussion :) Otherwise, if using kde for adding users, maybe the interface should handle things like default groups. It really depends on what the system is being used for. Same should go for other devices like cdrom's, usb devices whatever. Upgrading to RC 7 -- Where?
I've removed as many KDE files (RC 6) as I could and then reinstalled KDE from the updated sources (Sid: deb http://ktown.kde.org/~nolden/kde unstable main). What was being loaded however, was RC 6 again! And using aptitude, the column that displays the package version is not complete so I could not double-check using that. What apt-source do I need to download KDE RC 7? -- Comments are most appreciated, Bob

Re: Only root can play sound
That's NOT the right way to fix it. You should add the user in question to the audio group. In Debian, the permissions and ownership of /dev nodes is VERY carefully thought out. e.g. want a user to be able to use the serial ports? Then add him to the dialout group. At least doing it this way stops your friend with his guest account ssh'ing into your box, and start playing mp3s at 3am for a 'laugh'! strange k3b behaviour
Hi ML, I'm using Ralf's KDE3.1 (thanks Ralf!) and k3b. I did k3bsetup and the user can burn CD images with cdrecord. As root, k3b behaves just normal, but in the user account, the IDE does not 'work' properly. The file selector (sub-)window is displayed in an extra window and the 'main' window with menu bar, toolbar, etc. is empty (except menu, toolbar, statusbar). After creating a new project, as I can add files to the session and burn the image under k3b, but there is no project window. Does anyone know of this problem/has solved it? There are two types of screensavers, regular ones that were made especially for KDE. It seems to me that the xscreensaver support is broken (at least on my machines it is). I have the xscreensaver and -nognome options installed. They used to work but I think they are broken in Ralf's current packaging or at the source code level. Has anyone else encountered problems using the xscreensavers recently, even though you have the dependencies all met? Perhaps there's some other library which needs to be upgraded but somehow is not listed as a dependency? __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. Re: Woody/KDE3.1RC7 debs : Screensavers Report
Paul, Thanks for the clarification - I understood that. BUT - The XScreensaver Option does not work (on both Woody and Sid kde 3.1) (I have installed both xscreensaver and xscreensaver-nognome) as I believe the xscreensaver program does not run as a daemon by xscreensaver.kss. Definition of not working: The screen is blanked at the correct time, but the xscreensaver screensaver is not displayed. However the blank screen is ended properly by a mouse or keyboard movement. I think that kde can avoid running xscreensaver as a daemon by providing a random selection of screensavers when XScreensaver option is chosen. Would that work? i.e. put randomizing code in xscreensaver.kss similar to what I use for display of random Eterm pixmaps: background %random(`cat pixmaps.list 2>/dev/null`) But I am not enough familiar with perl to put that (or similar code) in the kss file. Or indeed if that is the solution for getting the xscreensaver program to run properly. Re: apt-get dist-upgrade with ralf's stable
Yes, the stable ones are newer. (3.1 vs. 3.0.99). No, Ralf is not going to update the unstable packages any more. If KDE is currently working for you, then I would personally remove any 3rd party apt-lines at all (including Ralf's) and wait for 3.1 to enter unstable officially. Annoying thing in Konqueror
Hello, few weeks ago, I either changed one setting or upgraded my KDE. since then the form fields in Konqueror get selected automatically when the mouse is over them, I find that to be annoying and I have no clue how to turn it off. I am runing 3.1R6 on Debian. Thanks Ayman
Re: Kweather freeze the kicker!
Tim, I suspect KL's sid debs did not/will not make a difference with Kweather. Kweather will fail and "kill" your session if it's defined weather station is not found or is not responding. I run Kweather on both Woody (Ralph's debs) and Sid(Karolina's debs) and have encountered the same problem. My station KSEA seems to work OK so you might try that to see if the problem goes away. You can manually change the weather station by edit of .kde/share/config/weather_panelappletrc This Kweather "bug" exists at bugs.kde.org. If you want to use the xscreensaver option, you must have xscreensaver installed. If you want to install xscreensaver, you must install exactly one of either xscreensaver-nognome and xscreensaver-gnome, in order to satisfy the dependancies of the xscreensaver package. KDE users should use xscreensaver-nognome over xscreensaver-gnome, if they do not have gnome installed. It seems that installing xscreensaver-gnome may cause (some) duplicate entries in the (x)screensaver list when using KDE. Not quite sure what my point is, but I hope that clarifies things somewhat. Can it be that you both had Anti-Aliasing enabled ? If yes, disable it or use XFree 4.2.1 which is known to work best with anti-aliased text fonts while the standard woody version 4.1 is quite a bit unreliable with that. I built the Qt packages for 3.0.5 without antialiasing enabled so that this doesn't occur, but I didn't want to provide two different sets for Qt again just to work around this on some chipsets and prevent most people to use antialiased text fonts. Konqueror's File Association
Hi there: I am trying to remaster a Knoppix CD. Using apt and dpkg, I removed all KDE 3.0 packages, and installed Ralph Nolden's KDE 3.1 packages on it. After this something wierd is happenning. When KDE's default language is set to some specific languages like Turkish, Finish, Farsi and Czech; konqueror is not able to open html pages. intead it opens the page in a text editor (kate I believe) and shows it's source code. While when KDE's default language is set to other languages like German, English or Polish, Konqueror handles html pages correctly. What may cause konqueror's file association to malfunction? What may force Konqueror to open html pages in a text editor? Any ideas? Can't see mail folders in KMail
Greeting all, ;-) Thanks for Ralf's deb first and I'm trying to do my best on testing. I found a problem in KMail that I can't see the name of folders. I had taken a screen shot: http://www.csie.nctu.edu.tw/~yttsai/screen_shot/kmail_bug.jpg You can see the left side, where the folder list should be show the list of folders, is totally blank except the number. Would that be my own problem or that is a bug? My Environment is sid and if u want to know the specific packages that I have installed, I can list for u. Thanks Everyone Give Ur Time Making KDE Better! Best Regards and Happy New Year Tim
Having problem with compiling kdegraphics on sid (KDE_3_1_BRANCH)

If you use the admin dir in your template correctly, it will find out most stuff automatically by reading kde-config. prelinking
I recently discovered the very nice prelink package. apt-get install prelink; prelink -a will prelink every binary on your system (in unstable at least). I was looking forward to a nice speedup in KDE, however, prelinking every KDE binary fails with the message "Cannot prelink against non-PIC shared library /usr/lib/libqt-mt.so.3" So now I have some questions: Does prelinking the KDE libraries still do any good? I haven't used a stopwatch, but I don't notice any difference. Why is QT position-dependent code, and can it be made position-independent? Is it possible to get a fully prelinked KDE in Debian unstable? James for(int r=-1,c=0;r!=38;c++){if(c>r){r++;printf("\n"); for(c=38;c!=r;c--)printf(" ");c=0;}printf(~r&c?" `":" #");}
