That's not the proper way to start kdm (or any other display manager).
In the Debian way it's :

Try to install mplayer from:

which is broken, konq or my setup?

2003-02-13 Thread Bruce Sass
Hi,

I've been having this problem since purging Karolina's KDE-3.1 and
installing those in sid...

Konqueror says it can't handle text/html; always when using a "file"
type profile, sometimes even when using the "browsing" profile. If I
(re)load the browsing profile I can access HTML, but end up losing
everything I was doing (any tabs and whatever they were opened on).

Konq like this is 1/2 as useful as it used too be,
and GIT is getting much more use again. I like GIT, but :(

Is anyone else seeing this behaviour?

Japanese display in KDE 3.1

2003-02-13 Thread Lucas Moulin
Hi all,

I'm currently trying to get KDE 3.1 (and konqueror especially) to
display japanese text. I'm running Sid.
Yahoo Japan and other sites just are unreadable, I can't read japanese
mails in kmail, and I wanted to know if this is a configuration issue or
if it's due to the packages.

If it's the first answer, could you please tell me how you manage to get
display and input working.
Thanks in advance.

kde3 kcm_arts/kmid linked to kdecore.so.3 ??

2003-02-13 Thread Gilles Grandou
Hi All,

I have a rather strange bug on my installation.

my pc is up to date with sid, and so has now most of KDE3.1.
The whole thing is running perfectly except for most (all?) of sound related
applications:

* the arts control panel fails complaining about a missing lib:

$ kcmshell arts
kdecore (KLibLoader): WARNING: library=kcm_arts:
file=/usr/lib/kde3/kcm_arts.la: libkdecore.so.3: cannot open shared object
file: No such file or directory

$ ldd /usr/lib/kde3/kcm_arts.so
libkio.so.4 => /usr/lib/libkio.so.4 (0x40027000)
libkdeui.so.4 => /usr/lib/libkdeui.so.4 (0x40291000)
[...]
libkdecore.so.3 => not found

* kmid is linked with libkdecore.so.3 as well.

$ ldd /usr/bin/kmid
libkmidpart.so => /usr/lib/kde3/libkmidpart.so (0x40012000)
libkparts.so.2 => /usr/lib/libkparts.so.2 (0x4006b000)
libkio.so.4 => /usr/lib/libkio.so.4 (0x400a3000)
libkdeui.so.4 => /usr/lib/libkdeui.so.4 (0x4030c000)
libkdesu.so.4 => /usr/lib/libkdesu.so.4 (0x4052)
[...]
libkdecore.so.3 => not found

I initially thought that it was a problem in my setup (due to a not so
seamless upgrade from unffocial kde3 packages), but all packages seem to be
clean.

On the other way, I can hardly think no one has already complained about this
if it is a general problem in the official packages...

For reference, I have filled a bug against kcontrol (which contains kcm_arts):

Any comments?
Gilles.

K3b and oKle packages update request

2003-02-13 Thread Christopher Martin
Hello,

The K3b project released 0.80 (final) a couple of days ago, and I was
wondering if/when an updated package would appear in the
ktown.kde.org archive.

Otherwise, everything is working well, though the oKle package has
always been slightly messed up. It should consist of a binary file
"okle", the execution of which runs the program. For some reason,
however, the current package only contains a binary "okle_gui" which,
when executed, returns the following error:

Please do not call the ogle_gui binary directly!
Instead copy it to /usr/lib/ogle/ogle_gui and then run ogle.

Following these instructions gets things working, but according to the
oKle homepage (http://okle.sourceforge.net/), since the release of
the latest version, this is the wrong way to do things, since it
conflicts with the standard GTK+ ogle_gui executable (overwrites it).
If you could adjust the okle package to eliminate this problem, I'd
appreciate it!

Thanks,

Christopher Martin

On my machine those kmail packages crash on startup with the following

ldd -v /usr/lib/libkdeui.so.4 should show such conflicts.

QComboBox is part of QT. Searching for the undefined symbol in
libqt-mt.so.3.1.1 shows:

# objdump -T libqt-mt.so.3.1.1 |grep _ZN9QComboBox13focusOutEventEP11QFocusEvent

Installing sid's libqt3* packages should fix your problem.

Don't know about the latter. But only duplicates in the bookmarks

Ccompiling Gideon for KDE 3.1

Does anyone know which packages are needed to compile Gideon for KDE 3.1?
I'd like to start using it for several of my projects and ever since 3.1 for

package I want to go ahead and compile my own for the time being. However on
the ./configure step I get the following error:

Please check your installation!

However, this is installed:
ii libqt3-mt-dev 3.1.1-2Qt development files (Threaded)

Which I presume goes with this:
ii libqt3c102-mt 3.1.1-2Qt GUI Library (Threaded runtime version)

Even though there is no libqt3c102-mt-dev (which irks me to no end).

We are reworking the whole Qt packages. Martin will let them upload into
unstable ASAP and this will probably solve your problem. The current sid
packages have the codecs compiled as plugins, the version before and the
version that's going in now will have them compiled in (which should match a
self-compiled Qt).

Looks like this boils down to a missing #include in the cpp
output. This file does exist on my system in /usr/include/kde, same as on
an i386, yet the same configure test brings in the file on i386.

I'm not sure what the cause is. Can anybody help?

(Yes, all the build-deps are satisfied.)

This is also reported as bug #180816.

Hi,

Looks like the KDE3 version of kmail is not in sid. Any ideas why?
The mail that is in sid is uninstallable.

qt and charset problems

2003-02-13 Thread luluke
Hello,
since I upgraded to kde3.1 on debian sid the gb2312 character encoding
is not displayed properly. It is not a font problem as chinese characters
are displayed well in unicode.
I wrote a little test application which I linked against sid's qt
library (libqt3c102-mt) and against a self-compiled qt library.
The first program didn't show the characters correctly, the second did.
So I think (if it is not my system which is broken) that there is
something wrong with qt3 in sid.
Does anybody else experience the same problem?
Regards,
Henning

I was unable to do that. kmail seems to require both kdelibs-dev and
libpng2-dev to compile, but they conflict with each other. Is anyone
able to compile kmail from sid at the moment?

Hello,
I have Woody installed. I wanted to have X support for an ATI Radeon

the files from the XFree86 website and installed them according to their

Maybe try the 4.2.1 debs for woody from:
deb http://debian.mpe.mpg.de/apt-cacher/people.debian.org/~blade/woody/i386 ./

instructions. I use KDE 2.2.2 as my window manager, and KDM as my login
manager. Everything worked fine before the XFree upgrade. However, now
when I boot up, Woody goes straight to a console login prompt. I have
RTFineM. My /etc/X11/default-display-manager file says /usr/bin/kdm. I
have KDM installed. I have run "dpkg-reconfigure kdm" and set kdm as
default. When I ran "update-rc.d kdm defaults" it says that 'System
startup links for /etc/init.d/kdm' already exists. Still, everytime I
boot up, Woody goes straight to a console login prompt. If I then login
as user, and then run "startx", then KDE starts up. I want KDM to start
up at bootup. What could be wrong?

Does KDM run?
ps -ef | grep kdm
If not try '/etc/init.d/kdm start' for root on the console work.
Check /etc/kde2/kdm/Xserver and check that
the path to the xserver match the one you've chosen
for your own Xfree86 installation (I guess here's the bug ;)
Check
grep ' kdm['  /var/log/syslog
tail -100   /var/log/kdm.log

debian_newbie,

Thanks for replying Achim. I just haven't had the time to try your
suggestions. But, yes KDM is running. If I type 'kdm' at a root prompt,
I get no response, just another root prompt. Like this:

debian:/home/jerry# kdm
debian:/home/jerry#
So, I'm pretty sure KDM is running.

I just upgraded 3.0.3 to 3.1 from debs at kde.org and ran into quite a few
problems like Nick's (kdelibs4 is the only one that comes to immediate mind). I
just did "dpkg --force-override -i /var/cache/apt/archives..." to force the
install of the packages that had conflicts and everything worked.

I've solved this by:

- Uninstall all former KDE related packages
- Deleting every line of my sources list except:
  deb http://download.kde.org/stable/3.1/Debian stable main
- apt-get update
- installing all required KDE packages.

kde sid problem: unresolved symbols

2003-02-13 Thread Frank Van Damme
Hello,

I just apt-got the sid kde 3.1 packages (this box is mainly unstable).
However if I start a kde program I get something like this:

konqueror: relocation error: /usr/lib/libkdeui.so.4: undefined symbol:
_ZN9QComboBox13focusOutEventEP11QFocusEven

I think this is because of mixing packages compiled with gcc 3.2 with those
compiled with gcc 2.95, but I also tried to apt-get -t unstable every
dependency of kdelibs4 and konqueror manually - they're all upgraded to
unstable now. I don't want to upgrade EVERYTHING to sid, just the necessary
stuff (ie all C++ libraries and binaries).

Does anyone have a clue what lib I might have missed. I know I can also
install unofficial debs (as some people here have solved this problem), but
I would rather go "the right way" and install the official stuff.

apt-get -t unstable dist-upgrade shows me that I can still upgrade the

uh, duplicat bookmarks...

does that mean both a link in the konqueror bookmarks bar
(parallel to the URL-bar) and the bookmarks sub(-sub-)folders?

or is it a duplicate bookmark if any given URL reoccures within
any of the sub(-sub-)folders? does it qualify as duplicate if
there are the same URL with different arguments (like google with
different seach words)?

In fact I didn't update that as Calc is now adding KDE to sid with proper
conflicts. Qt has been reworked since almost 4 weeks now so it is to be
considered a perfect set of packages. We even managed to make all of the
examples and tutorials work for Qt, Designer and Linguist that will just
require the user to install qt3-examples (in accordance with qt2-examples),
tar xzvf /usr/share/doc/qt3-examples/qt3-examples.tar.gz; cd qt3-examples;
./build-examples.

The only exception is that qconfig.h does not really contain all the defines
that are necessary, which is a bug in the configure script of Qt. Therefore
compiling the examples which derive from QWindowsStyle (or any style) won't
work.

Chris,

if anything in the KDE_3_1_BRANCH won't compile without the compat-includes,
please notify me or change the source. We could also use the fixincludes
script to do it all at once across KDE to make sure everything is using the
right includes.
