At least with k3b, there is a way to simply not have the wizard change anything. I only used cdbakeoven long enough to figure out that it does not have my killer feature*, so I'll just take your word for it not having the same thing :-) D.A.Bishop *for those who are interested, (all 2 of you), my killer feature is being able to drag a directory into the 'project', find that it is 900+ megs, and then selectively delete subdirs and individual files until it fits. k3b allows this, gcombust and cdbakeoven don't, dunno about xcdroast. Of course, I have all the config still from the karolina version, so I didn't even see the wizard again :-) The only thing of note is that it appears to be compiled with some sort of debugging turned on (?). At least, it is extremely verbose when started from the command-line. And while I *like* my apps with debugging enabled, to make better bug reports, I know that isn't generally the "ship" state. Re: Where is kdenetwork, where is Chris?
I'm a Debian newbie/refugee from RedHat and don't consider myself particularly unqualified to use Sid. And yes, I'm wondering where KDE 3.1 (complete) is and why I can't use apt-get to install it rather than compiling my own. I have searched the archives and they don't provide the info. I don't understand why this is an unreasonable question. I need to install KDE 3.1 on two slow iMac powerpc boxes and apt-get would beat the heck out of compiles. In general, my experience with Sid has been fine. Jeff Elkins http://www.elkins.org

Anybody who's willing to go to the trouble of following the mailing list, searching the archives, and adding Ralf's KDE packages to his sources.list sounds like a good candidate for running Sid (and giving useful feedback when things don't work). I think the problem is that KDE just isn't quite "there" yet in Debian, and these are the growing pains that we should expect in these early days. No amount of reading the list of googling would have given the answer to the question he asked, which was, "when is the rest of kde going into sid?". Actually, he showed the ability to search archives when he looked up the rebuttal to this. It hasn't been discussed over and over *by the people who can answer his question*. Chris hasn't posted to this mailing list in almost three weeks. IIRC, his last email or so was regarding the rest of kde being help up by a bad qt, which, unless I'm mistaken, has been fixed for a while now. So the perfectly valid question, posed in a perfectly valid non-demanding way, is: what's the holdup? Much of the antsiness of people around here could be settled by simple 3-line status updates by the relevant parties. > Sorry if this sounds harsh, but I'm just in a irritated mood with topics > that have been discussed OVER and OVER and OVER again. :) Nobody can stop newbies from signing up to the list and asking the same questions over and over again, with no regard for the list archives (why doesn't my sound work would be a good example of that), but this isn't that email. -- "Yousa steala precious from meesa!" - Jar-Jaromir D.A.Bishop

Strange cd-burner I have
I have a strange CD burner. It's not detected by cdrecord -scanbus, and so therefore not detected by cdbakeoven. The only way I can actually use it to burn stuff is with xcdroast, whose interface I absolutely despise. I'll continue to use it if I must, but I'd rather not. When I go into xcdroast, it says the bus id is ATAPI:0,1, and all the speed settings are correct. Does anyone have any idea why this would be? I'd like to use cdbakeoven, but I can't get it (or cdrecord, unless I tell it to use ATAPI:0,1) to detect my cd-burner. You just have to configure your device in /etc/cdrecord/cdrecord, so all defaults are okay. To all: I am sure many people made such easy scripts for various uses and bound them to mime types in konqueror (think about "wget this recursively"). How about collecting these and making a package from all this, "konqueror-helpers" or so... I am missing a lot of useful commandline tools from KDE and just starting them in an xterm should be a good idea. This could even get a bigger project, with a kcontrol module to choose from many utilities. To the .deb-specialists and KDE package maintainers: Debian has a MIME registry with filetype-program and filetype-action associations (like "view" or "edit"). Is there any reason not to write a script "update-konqueror-actions", making .desktop-files for all those mime types? It just would have to store whichh files are autogenerated to be able to remove them when the package is removed. Or does apt have a directory for scripts executed after every install/update/remove action? This would be even better, then the .desktop-files would be always up-to-date. There are even things like "needsterminal" in /etc/mailcap... If anyone except me finds this useful, I will write it, that shouldn't be so much work in python or perl ;) kappfinder does this the other way round, it maintains a small set of applications with hand-written .desktop files. With debian and apt and its mime registry system (which should be far more used my package maintainers) this should be handled smarter. PS: There is no MIME type for "ISO-Image"? I had the same problem, trying all programs in debian. That was until I found k3b, and found that it does the job good. Unfortunately, the common answer for a KDE program applies - it is not in debian yet. Probably on the way. Karolina

This tells apt to give Debian/unstable a priority of 800 (i.e. higher than already installed debs and higher than the default for 'other' sources), but gives the two unofficial sources even higher priority than Debian unstable. This means that the unofficial debs of kdenetwork and kdepim will be prefered over the old ones in Debian/unstable, but Debian/unstable will be used for everything else (i.e. everything not in the two unofficial sources). Problem after installing KDE 3.1
Hi, I've a problem with KDE 3.1. I'm quite new to Debian, so to start, I installed a basic system without kde and servers. Now I tried to install KDE 3.1, adding deb http://ktown.kde.org/~nolden/kde stable main to my sources.list and using apt-get install kdebase kdm So far so good. Everythink works fine, and the right packages are installed, i chose kdm as default. At the end of the installation Starting K Desktop Manager: done is printed. Now what do I have to do now? Where do I have to set my display and graphic adapter settings? How do I start it? Thanks for helping, Kay Michael Voit

Bob, Before you go, try gcombust ... this has been the most consistent stable, accurate and lean and mean burner for Linux I have found. I have tried them all and always got back to gcombust. How Do I Burn CDs?
As heretical as this may sound, I've actually been contemplating moving back to a Windows XP OS simply for the ease of CD burning. I have no cd burning program on my Debian unstable box, having tried all available (namely, xcdroast, which is horribly unusable). QT Version Problem
When attempting to compile cdbakeoven, the following occured: checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.1 (20021021)) (headers and libraries) not found. Please check your installation! This same error occurs with most software for KDE 3.1 that I try to compile. I have installed KDE 3.1 on my Debian unstable box and am clueless as to why this occurs. If I have KDE 3.1, don't I automatically require and therefore have QT 3.1? -- Comments are most appreciated, Bob

unstable upgrade breaks all kde3.1 apps
Hi all, I've got my first serious problem since many years that I cannot track down. I'm running "unstable", so this can happen :-) Today (03/03/2003) I did an apt-get update, apt-get upgrade and more than 100 packages were upgraded. meanwhile (I'm running kde3.1) the window manager was dead, the hd was spinning. I killed X and kdm started to launch but never came to life, kdm_greeter eats more than 100 MB memory and more than 60% CPU, so I shut down kdm and tried startx with kde3 with the same problem, and with icewm also. Only with wmaker it works. Most stuff works like mozilla xterm, rxvt, lynx, gtk-applications, only any kde app eats memory and cpu and never appears (for instancce kcalc > 100 MB virtual mem, and > 65% cpu). So anyone has a similar problem? Any idea to track this down (library problem?)? I've tried to run "nice -n 10 kcalc > xxxfile 2>&1" and only found thousands of lines where the app is loading every font file ... What the hell is this, other apps doesn't do that. I did dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 but this did not help. thanx Sebastian -- Sebastian Bunka, Dr. med. vet. Inst. Med. Chemistry, Vet. cdbakeoven
I installed cdbakeoven on my machine this past weekend. During the configuration, it wanted to add my cdburner to fstab as /dev/hdd. The burner is already working properly as /dev/scd0. Is there any advantage to having it listed as /dev/hdd in addition to /dev/scd0? Am I missing something obvious here? TIA bob
