Instability after kernel upgrade
I have been using the kernel 2.4.19 but need to go to .20 for security purposes. I've compiled it successfully and installed it with no hitch but things do not seem as stable in KDE now. When I scroll in a window, I get little white lines on my desktop window. They don't seem to appear in other Window managers. Also things are not as stable. I get crashes about once a week/every two weeks when before I never had them. I also noticed that in the game TuxRacer, Tux is discolored (white), leading me to wonder if I'm having a DRI problem. I've looked through all the /var/log/messages and the XFree86.0.log and can't find anything that would indicate what's going on. I'm using Ralf Nolden's XFree 4.3 packages with KDE 3.1.1 and a Radeon 7500. Is it possible to use the ATI provided drivers even though they are for the 8500+? Or should I downgrade to XFree86 4.2? tia

Re: no sound when logged as user
Hi :) How's that for a quick response? It's not a KDE issue, as you guessed, but anyways: Look at /dev/audio, which should be your sound device. It should be: crw-rw1 root audio 14, 4 2002-03-14 21:51 /dev/audio This means unless you're root, OR a member of the audio group, you can't write to it. The best way to do this is to add the user/users in question to the audio group ie usermod -G audio If you really don't care about permissions, you *can* make /dev/audio read/writable by anyone, although on a multiuser system, this has some security issues (people listening through your microphone, or playing audio at 3am to wake you up?) no sound when logged as user
I installed debian 3.0r1 onto a desktop and a laptop and have the same problem with both...when loggen in as a user I have no sound. I know it's a permission problem (at least I think I do), but don't know where to look. I know this question has been asked but I couldn't find it in the archives. How do I set the permissions for sound to all users? When logged on as root everything works fine. Thanks, Jay

Yes, but both have to be handled. Can you think of a basic premise where if a user doesn't have a process running, he needs the mounts still? And even if there is a case for that, it is an exeption to the rule, and not the norm. > > Well, we should be able to detect if > > 1) the user has active processes > > 2) the user is logged in (Actually that will be covered by 1) > > > > If not, the mount can be reaped. > > How do you propose to reap the mounts? It needs to be addressed, in any case, and if at least any mounts created by Komba were reaped when unused, then we would be a long way. Any shares mounted manually, (ie not via Komba) it doesn't have to deal with.. Then noone has to deal with the whole debian system logic as a whole, and deal with it strictly in the package that handles 'mounting and unmounting'. Maybe a seperate 'mtab style' record keeping, and a cron job to clean them would be the simplest, or a Komba Reaper Daemon, and this could have 'as an option' the ability to clean up system mounts, but this should not be the default. > Perhaps automatic unmounting-upon-closing-komba could be added as a They already have that.. > user-definable option, but I think that would be a bad idea. But that doesn't handle disco's So a reaper would have to be in place anyways, so might as well let the reaper do all the work. As well, it may need to be at the user logoff, and not KDE logoff, however that might be more satisfying for those liking 'Microsoft Style' > I can understand the problem you percieve, but I do not agree with your > proposed solutions. If they do not unmount them, perhaps they had a good reason No, it shoudl be that if they have a NEED to keep shares opened after all their tasks are completed, they should perform some special operation to do so, but this SHOULD NOT be the default behavior in a robust system. -- -- "Catch the Magic of Linux..." How do you propose to reap the mounts? This is not, AFAIK, something which komba is concerned with. Description: KDE Samba browser Komba2 is a GUI machine and share browser for the SMB protocol. Komba2 allows you to scan any number of subnets for machines with SMB. The workgroups, machines and share are shown in a tree-view. For each machine you can then view the list of shares, and mount, unmount or browse them. You can also search a machine by name or ip. If you want users to unmount things when they log off, perhaps this could be added as an option to komba ( [X] Always unmount upon logoff ), but it should not be on by default. if you want unused mounts on your system to be unmounted, you need some daemon to do that. Perhaps automatic unmounting-upon-closing-komba could be added as a user-definable option, but I think that would be a bad idea. One should not have to have komba running the entire time one wants to use a share mounted _via_ komba. Having an unmount-upon-logoff would be better, but would require some part of komba to be called upon KDE logoff to do the unmounting. I can understand the problem you percieve, but I do not agree with your proposed solutions. Users should unmount shares when they have finished with them. I posted this on the debian-user list a while back and got no reponse. Does anyone here have a solution, or any idea how to fix this problem: I am experiencing this problem with KDE theme manager: See this link: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22147 I'm running Woody with KDE 2.2.2-14.2. When I go into Control Center>Look and Feel>Theme Manager I have a good list of themes, but when I click on a theme name I get this message: "Sorry - Theme does not contain a .themerc nor a .theme file." I've searched Google. There have been other postings with this problem but with no solution. I've searched the kde.org kde-user archives with no success. I've searched the debian-kde archives with no success. Because this is the highest volume mailing list I thought I would first post this here. At the end of the above bug page they say it's fixed in KDE 3.1rc6. Does anybody know how to fix this problem in Woody with KDE 2.2.2? Or do I have to wait until I can upgrade to 3.1.1? I know there are KDE 3.1 packages availabe for Woody, but I'm trying to stay stable. Any recommendations? Thank you very much! -- debian_newbie, Thanks [;-)

over 200 font.cache files and growing.
I just installed sid and kde 3.1.1. I noticed a weird flickering every time I displayed my home directory in konqueror. On a hunch, I selected the show hidden files option and noticed that a ridiclulously large number of font.cache files werebeing created and deleted on an almost constant basis. Since the creation of files is a slightly expensive process, I'm pretty sure that this is having an effect on my performance. Most of the files are empty (0 bytes). Why is this happening and how do I stop it?
