Odd pauses with KDE 3
On my only sid KDE 3 machine, I notice that the entire system seems to pause for a few seconds at a time. Launching a new Konqueror process (I have "minimize memory usage" set to "local only", so I assume starting a Konqueror web browser will start a new process) has this effect, and the KDE save file dialog also does it sometimes, particularly if I am editing the filename to save to. When these pauses occur, everything (or at least everything KDE-related, which is usually everything visible) is unresponsive; even XMMS (which is using xmms-arts for output) pauses when its current sample buffer runs out. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this, or suggestions for things I should check? This problem does not occur under Gnome 2 or in other non-KDE environments, even on the same machine. TIA for any help that anyone can offer. Craig pgpouUy9ZJCCc.pgp Description: PGP signature

(ie, there is still more I would like to do - perhaps use metacity instead of kwm, and how to change this for only a single user instead of system-wide). thanks, jason

Hi Jason, The magic happens in $KDEDIR/share/autostart/panel.desktop $ vi /usr/share/autostart/panel.desktop replace Exec=kicker with Exec=gnome-panel replace X-DCOP-ServiceType=wait with X-DCOP-ServiceType=nowait Works for me, gnome-panel does not seem too stable though, but my gnome is broken. Good luck, Johan

Yes. I'm a Kde user, and I know I can set file preferences so that files are opened with something other than konq, kwrite, or whatever. I assume similar features are available in GNome. I would think that what you want to do is run the GNome desktop, and find the way to set the file associations for the desired files (.html, ???) to open using konq. Randy Kramer

Debian packages of KDevelop 3.0 (Gideon) from CVS
I have made some packages of KDevelop 3.0 from CVS. I have made both Woody and Sid packages. If you have htdig 3.1.6-4 or greater installed, then it will generate a global documentation index that all users can use. This will be done automatically during the install. You can get packages of htdig 3.1.6-5 using the apt sources lines below. Here are the KDevelop packages: gideon (required) gideon-data (required) gideon-plugins (required) gideon-dev (optional) gideon-doc (optional) The apt sources lines for Woody are: deb http://people.debian.org/~njordan/stable binary deb-src http://people.debian.org/~njordan/stable source The apt soruces lines for Sid are: deb http://people.debian.org/~njordan/unstable binary deb-src http://people.debian.org/~njordan/unstable source Thanks. -- Norman Jordan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
use partial kde?
is it possible to only use parts of kde? ie, I want the "desktop" (i want kde icons on the desktop, and when I click a folder icon on the desktop I want konq to open it), but I want to use gnome-panel instead of kicker, etc. is there any hope for this? -jason
