Please specify what version of KMail you are running. I haven't seen that bug
in 3.1.3 or in CVS head.

Why are there "More" and "Fewer" buttons in the Actions area while there are

export XAUTHORITY=~kjetil/.Xauthority

i don't expect this to help with the real problem, though.

KDM/X authorization problems on a laptop

2003-09-06 Thread Kjetil Kjernsmo
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Dear all,

I was just given a laptop to use on a course that will take me offline
for three weeks, starting tomorrow night, and over the past couple of
days, I've been trying desperately to get Debian on it.

The install itself went smoothly, but I have some real trouble
configuring it, I think it could have something to do with KDM talking
with X. I first posted a message to debian-laptop, but I got no
response. I hope it doesn't mean the question was stupid... :-) Perhaps
people didn't know the answer, so I hope this is a better forum, and as
you understand, I'm in a slight hurry... :-)

The laptop itself is a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo D, the further specs (as
well as some install notes), can be found at
http://www.ratnaweera.net/amilo/

In addition to Woody, I installed the KDE 3.1.3 packages by inserting
the apt source at install time, so it has never seen the KDE packages
from Woody, KDE 3.1.3 was installed just after doing the tasksel stuff.
I just mention it in case it could be something that is in KDE 2.2.2
that isn't in KDE 3.1.3. Except for that, it is a pure Woody system.

I've also installed KDM to use as the default manager, and it comes up
at startup. When I log in, either as a user or as root, the splash
screen comes up, proceeds to "Initializing Peripherals" before it goes
boom, and throws me back to the login screen.

After this has happened, I can find lines such as this in
/var/log/XFree86.0.log:
AUDIT: Fri Sep 5 14:38:06 2003: 410 X: client 5 rejected from local
host
AUDIT: Fri Sep 5 14:38:06 2003: 410 X: client 5 rejected from local
host

in ~/.xsession-errors, I see this:
startkde: Starting up...
kbuildsycoca running...
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server
artsmessage: cannot connect to X server :0.0
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server
knotify: cannot connect to X server :0
DCOP aborting call from 'anonymous-426' to 'knotify'
ERROR: Communication problem with knotify, it probably crashed.

It seems to connect to the X-server twice every time I do this, and that
explains why I see two messages I guess. If knotify has crashed, I
guess that's a bad sign, but it may be a consequence rather than a
cause of the problem, which I assume must have to do with
authorization.

Any ideas at this point? If not, this is what I've been playing with...:

Myself I've been working along the lines of that there is something
wrong with how kdm is configured to work with the X server.

I've googled a lot and tried many things. DRI is 0666 as it should be.
Knoppix works beautifully, but I guess it only connects to the xserver
as the user who started it. I've even tried copying the Knoppix config
and start from there. There are some errors about "Generic Mouse", I
don't know why that is configured, but I've tried commenting it out. I
think it is unrelated.

In posts to various mailing lists, I've seen people set
DisplayManager*authorize: false in xdm-config, delete /dev/dri, etc,
and I've done all that. I've also seen something about Xwrapper
mentioned in a post about an ibook,
http://lists.debian.org/debian-powerpc/2003/debian-powerpc-200302/msg00021.html
but the mentioned README is not something I find on my system...
(powerpc specific?)

I've tried (as root)
xhost +
which says
xhost: unable to open display ""
so I set
DISPLAY=:0.0
export DISPLAY
and then go
xhost +
which says
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server
xhost: unable to open display ":0.0"

uh, so it won't even let root do that...

So, I'm out of ideas now, and getting desparate. So, any ideas would be
greatly appreciated!

Best,

Kjetil

Really big meta-packages are known to have problems. One should not
install kde (or gnome) using their meta-packages, as so much can be
changed in the packages that compose the big one, thus making problems.

The proper way (at least that's what I always do) to install kde is :

apt-get install kdelibs arts kdebase

That will install a basic kde environment, but you can then install the
meta-packages such as -graphics or -network, which cause in general less
issues.

I'm running KDE and update/upgrade everyday, and I haven't seen any
broken dependancies yet. If you still do, please post your sources.list
as it may cause the problem too.

Hmm, i have a 'more' button, but only for the actions, not for more
conditions...

There is a item 'pass through script' (translated from german...) in the
list of available actions. Maybe that's more useful for a white-list?
(From within that script, one can add a special header, which is used

Normally kdemultimedia is set to hold automatically, I don't know what
the problem with kdemultimedia is - you should look into the bug database
for that.

Yes, aptitude has selected every package of kde for removal and also
every package that they depends on, if it is not needed. So the only
possibility is to manually select every single package for
installation.

Did you ever use apt-get update + apt-get (dist)upgrade for normal
upgrade? It is IMHO much faster for a single upgrade.

> Does this imply some change to the package dependenacies of kde?

I will not check the dependecies of kde, but I don't think that the
problem is there. I think it could be that aptitude deselected kde
because of the broken kdemultimedia packages and though also
deselected kde* packages.

entry boxes sufficient to define two criteria. There are no "More" or

Unstable has a problem somewhere - but where?

2003-09-06 Thread Alan Chandler

My kde is installed from unstable using aptitude - where I select "kde" and it
automatically brings in the rest.

I have just updated the package lists (using the u key) and now aptitude wants
to uninstall most of kde.

I suspect there is a problem with some of the packages - kdemultimedia seems
to have unsatisfiable dependencies - but I am not sure that should then cause
all of kde to be removed.

Questions

a) Has something happened to a recent upload to lose most of kdemultimedia?

b) Why when I try manually selecting another kde meta package (eg kdenetwork)
and trying to tell it manually install does it just show broken dependencies.
However, as I track each one down in aptitude (by selecting enter and looking
at the packages on which this package depends) each one shows unsatisfied
dependencies but if I eventually get to a leaf node (ie a package not
dependant on anything else) and manually select it for install - I can do
this. Does this imply some change to the package dependenacies of kde?

executing Jar archives in Konqueror 3.1.3

Hello,
Java Jar archives are executed using java -jar file.jar. I want to start
Jar archives directly from within Konqueror. In KDE 2.2.2 this was easy
to do: I associated Jar archives with the command java -jar. In KDE
3.1.3 from sid this is still possible, but no longer works. There's no
error message, the Jar file is simply not executed. How do I have to do
it now?

I haven't noticed it, but there do seem to be other random quirks
appearing as a result of the Qt 3.1 -> 3.2 upgrade. If downgrading Qt
to 3.1 gets rid of this problem then it might be worth submitting a KDE
bug report so this can be fixed in the forthcoming KDE 3.1.4 (which
amongst other things is designed to resolve Qt 3.2 issues).

Ben. :)
