Bug#244608: distorted decoding of mp3s since mpeglib 3.2.2-1
Package: mpeglib Version: 4:3.2.2-1 Severity: important Tags: sid Since upgrading to mpeglib 3.2.2-1, decoding of mp3s using mpeglib sounds dreadful, full of strange MPEG artifacts. Version 3.2.1-1 works perfectly, as do players built around other MP3 decoders (e.g. XMMS, mpg123, mpg321). Given that there appears to be no code change in the upstream release from 3.2.1-1, is this possibly a compiler/optimization bug, maybe only on i386? To reproduce, simply use: yaf-splay foo.mp3 High-frequency sounds such as hi-hats appear to trigger the artifacts more than other sounds. This also happens when playing the mp3 using arts/libarts1-mpeglib, so I don't think it's a problem with yaf-splay's output routines - it doesn't sound like it either. Ogg Vorbis files play perfectly using yaf-vorbis or through arts. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.4-ck1 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C Versions of packages mpeglib depends on: ii kdelibs44:3.2.2-1KDE core libraries ii libc6 2.3.2.ds1-11 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libcdparanoia0 3a9.8-11 Shared libraries for cdparanoia (r ii libgcc1 1:3.3.3-6GCC support library ii libogg0 1.1.0-1 Ogg Bitstream Library ii libstdc++5 1:3.3.3-6The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libvorbis0a 1.0.1-1 The Vorbis General Audio Compressi ii libvorbisfile3 1.0.1-1 The Vorbis General Audio Compressi ii libx11-64.3.0-7 X Window System protocol client li ii libxext64.3.0-7 X Window System miscellaneous exte ii libxv1 4.3.0-7 X Window System video extension li ii xlibs 4.3.0-7 X Window System client libraries m -- no debconf information

I captured the output of the same 30 seconds of audio from Noatun/arts/mpeglib and also from mpg321/libmad, then encoded them with FLAC. Available here: http://www.marm.org.uk/mpeglib-decode-bug-mad-output.flac http://www.marm.org.uk/mpeglib-decode-bug-mpeglib-output.flac -- marm

It's not entirely clear to me how this code actually ever works, but apparently it does. Why wouldn't it work ? I didn't say it wouldn't, I just said I don't understand how it works. I did locate kthemestyle/themes and got null output, so I guess that string is some sort of key and not a physical directory. However, I don't really know the internals of KDE. What happens there is a QSettings class is created, the current config resource dirs are added to its search path. Then, QSettings is told to get the config entry /kthemestyle/themes which it is supposed to get from a file kthemestylerc in its search path. I can't see why that fails for you. I'd like to debug this, but I can't since I don't get the error. However, I'm no closer to figuring out why I'm getting this message. Can you send us the output of the command locate kthemestylerc and the contents of the file /etc/kde3/kthemestylerc ? Possibly, 152:cavy:/usr/share/apps/kstyle/themes locate kthemestylerc /etc/kde3/.kthemestylerc.lock /etc/kde3/kthemestylerc /usr/local/kde/share/config/kthemestylerc /usr/local/kde/share/config/.kthemestylerc.lock /usr/local/src/kde/kdelibs/kstyles/themes/kthemestylerc All three copies of the file are identical: 153:cavy:/usr/share/apps/kstyle/themes cat /etc/kde3/kthemestylerc [General] themes=marble^eriscos^esystem^esystemalt^e [marble] file=marble.themerc [riscos] file=riscos.themerc [system] file=system.themerc [systemalt] file=systemalt.themerc Right. It means you have installed a local version of KDE, right ? Do you happen to have set KDEDIRS to something or have done other uncommon things ? Can you check if the problem goes away if you remove those settings ? thanks domi

Bug#244715: Use system bell doesn't use system bell (and kills everything else)
Package: arts Version: 1.2.2-1 Severity: grave My first thought was 'critical', following its description of makes unrelated software on the system break, but surely this can't be that hard to fix... On this box, the hardware beep /must/ work. And it works fine, outside of KDE. But once KDE starts up, artsd takes over the system beep, and artsd doesn't work. The System Bell module has its checkbox next to use the system bell instead of the little notification sounds, but the Test botton on that dialog does nothing, and the system beep never happens. Reading the logfiles, I can see artsd messages every time the hardware beep is supposed to go off. So clearly it's still being intercepted and notification sounds are still trying to be played; that's the bug. Toggling the checkboxes, enabling/disabling the sound system, deleting cache files, rebooting, etc, etc, doesn't help. It seems to be write-only. I don't really care for the moment that no sounds or music can play. That's a different problem and one that I don't ever expect to solve. But the hardware beep needs to keep working, not get silently (ha) killed when a user logs into the desktop. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.4.22-lac13 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C Versions of packages arts depends on: ii libarts1 1.2.2-1aRts Sound system ii libartsc0 1.2.2-1aRts Sound system C support librar -- no debconf information

Qt3 libraries not found while compiling
Hi! I've been trying to compile various programs for KDE, but every time I receive error message telling that the script (configure) can't find Qt3 libraries (qt-mt). I checked if they were installed and found them. I have also installed almost all Qt3 development packages found with 'apt-cache search' but it doesn't help to solve the problem. Can anyone help me to figure out what is going wrong here? Thanks, Ville _ Flirttaile, rupattele, juorua tai vaihda kuulumisia näytössä tapahtuvissa keskusteluissa. Please look at the docs in kdelibs4-dev and the admin/debianrules file for more information about how to compile kde packages under Debian. Chris signature.asc Description: Digital signature

I need to add that the problem with 3.2.2 is confined to KDE apps (juk, noatun, kaboodle). XMMS and mpg321 playing through ALSA worked fine all the time. That's why I blame libarts1-mpeglib and/or mpeglib (haven't tried them individually). Michael yep. exactly. so thanks for posting the solution. c

MIME / Wav files
Hi there, How can I set up my debian-KDE to play .wav files automatically? (If I had clicked on the filename in Konqueror, Kmail, etc...) Thanks, Tamas kernel-2.4.25 with OSS (I do not use ALSA yet) kdebase-3.2.2-1
Re: MIME / Wav files
You can right click and then select open with. After that, select any app capable of playing wav (xmms, noatun etc), and check the checkbox for remembering filetype association. KDE 3.2.2 for Woody... Careful upgrading..
Hmm.. THis was the worst KDE upgrade in a long while.. Had to delete 1/2 of KDE to get the upgrade to work, from KDE 3.2.0 to 3.2.2 Korganizer ate my calendar.. (Backup your .ics, actually my fault, anyone upgrading should always backup their .kde directory, JUST IN CASE, however it still should not have ate it.) OpenOffice no longer wants to install Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies: openoffice.org1.1-bin: Depends: libfreetype6 ( 2.1.0) but 2.1.5-1woody2 is to be installed kdeaddons won't install... Not sure why.. (Actually, NOW it does, but only after installing kdeaddons-kfile-plugins, not sure why that didn't automagically work) Fonts all changed.. (maybe new defaults, and didn't keep the old settings.) Aspell no longer likes it.. I think I backed up a version? komba2 is now gone..(That I understand, I guess) Lost 'psi' as it needs libqt3-mt, but that will remove everything.. as we now use libqt3c102-mt (Strange the naming for qt3-dev-tools stayed the same) Something replaces kdepim-libs.. I had to remove that one, it got jammed up as well.. apt-get install aspell Reading Package Lists... Done Building Dependency Tree... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. SIC, did this on kdeaddons as well Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that the package is simply not installable and a bug report against that package should be filed.
