Bug#252969: kdelibs-bin: changing the transperancy effects to 'xrender' fixes the problem

2004-06-30 Thread Gal Ben-Haim
Package: kdelibs-bin
Version: 4:3.2.3-2
Followup-For: Bug #252969

after testing it I found that changing the transperancy settings in the
'effects' dialog box under 'style' in the control panel to 'xrender'
fixes the problem.

Bug#256962: konqueror: mp3 id3 tag show in wrong locale

2004-06-30 Thread Gal Ben-Haim
Package: konqueror
Version: 4:3.2.2-1
Severity: normal
Tags: l10n

when browsing local filesystems and moving the mouse over mp3 files with
heberw id3 tag, the id3 tag is written with boxes inside the popup box,
like the locale is incorrect.
Im working with UTF-8, but I also tried it with ISO8859-8-I and I got
the same resaults.
konqueror should convert the id3 tag to the current locale before trying
to display it.

Bug#257009: some of the applets don't honor panel transparency

2004-06-30 Thread Marc Haber
Package: kicker
Version: 4:3.2.2-1.0
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

the new option to make the panel transparent is really neat. Mucho eye
candy ;)

However, some applets seem to not know about panel transparency. For
me, it is the lockout applet, the desktop chooser and the task list.

See the attached file.

KDE would look even better if all applets would honor the transparency
of the panel.

1. konsole (with xfonts-konsole)
2. kontact (mainly kmail/knode, then korganizer)
3. amarok (sadly still not in Debian)
4. konqueror (with all kfile plugins from Debian)
5. kopete (the only one QT-based IM with multi tabs in window)

not using kde cd player, kmix rarely used, for PDF I prefer Acrobat Reader
(kghostview is limited - it's rather PDF pager then viewer)

Aside from the kdebase and kdepim stuff (I use Kontact) I would say the
following are important to me:
Kopete, Kaffeine (or KMplayer or KPlayer doesn't really matter, but kaffeine
is xine based and not mplayer), amaroK and Kate. (in no specific order)

All my basic I just wanna use 'em tasks covered: surfing, mailing, listening
to music, watching video , a powerful editor and shell access. That's
basically the stuff I just want to work out of the box with no or little
hassle.

That may seem pretty skewed towards multimedia, but even from a base install
(or more like: basic install) I would expect to have viewers for all basic
and common file types like images (not only embedded in konqueror, but also
something like gwenview or at least kuickshow), audio (MP3/OGG), video
(Avi/MPG) and text (not to forget PDF). If I would find that I have to
install a whole bunch of applications later (finding them may be difficult,
especially for new user) just to get the simple things done, I'd be pretty
annoyed. If I have to install extra packages to get an office application,
that would be expected I think.

Presenting users with only a bare desktop and no everyday applications will
leave a bad impression (can't that thing do anything on its own?).

I have converted several people to use (or at least try) Linux instead of
Windows and one of the first questions after setting up the Network (i.e. web
and mail) almost invariably is How do I play my Mp3s and Videos?

The top priority on my personal wishlist would be (buzzword alert!)
integrated system configuration, so Samba (ksambaplugin), Apache, a
Firewall and maybe some FTP server become accessible without having to read
through tons of newbie incompatible server manuals... 8-)

Make it just feel simple (everything just works) and complete (Doesn't miss
anything trivial or basic)...

Well just my 2 cents... ;-)

Konqueror crashing regularly

2004-06-30 Thread Gavin Hamill
Hi :)

We run a call centre with 20-30 KDE diskless workstations. The machines are
mainly used with a web-based hotel-booking application which we have
developed, and are finding a relatively high level of instability with
Konqueror.

In short, Konq will sometimes segfault after submitting a POST form at the
point where the remote server is starting to send the next HTML through.

This problem has stayed with us for a few months and I thought it had gone
away with a previous KDE release, but I've been told that the problem is
still there.

Given that I would like to trace the problem rather than just moving everyone
to Firefox, etc. - how can I (easily?) build a set of Debian packages for sid
that will contain debug information so I can submit a useful backtrace to the
developers?

As I said, the machines are diskless, and have 256MB RAM and no swap space -
all they run is Konq and an Evolution instance - nothing really heavy like
OpenOffice, etc. so I can't really see the problem being lack of RAM, but I
would dearly like to get to the bottom of this, and fix it not only for us,
but possibly for many others who just put it down to 'some bug'.

Cheers,
Gavin.

Given that I would like to trace the problem rather than just moving
everyone to Firefox, etc. - how can I (easily?) build a set of Debian
packages for sid that will contain debug information so I can submit a
 useful backtrace to the developers?

Without recompile:

-Execute kdebugdialog and enable all options
-Execute it in a console with
konqueror 2 konq.log
-Crash it :(
-You will have in /tmp/kde-$USER/konqueror-crash* a log. Look before, and
delete all the konqueror-crash* to be sure you have the last one.
-Also you should have a long log in ~/.xsession-errors. clear it before also
to get the only the last errors messages (ex: echo ~/.xsession-errors)

Send the logs to the list (we can try later with bugs.kde.org). Compress them
please.

You can also make all this watching the net with ethereal (as root) and
sending (to me or to the list) the packet dump, to try to reproduce it and
make a testcase.

If you want to build it for debug, I can explain it if you want so. It's easy
but long.
