Bug#318765: libqt4-dev: got broken alternatives symlink for moc
Package: libqt4-dev Version: 4.0.0-1 Severity: minor Compiling a simple test program with qt4 failed with this error message: $ qmake $ make (cd /src/tools/moc make) /bin/sh: line 0: cd: /src/tools/moc: No such file or directory make: *** [/usr/bin/moc] Error 1 The reason is, that I somehow ended up with a broken alternatives symlink for moc: $ ls -al /etc/alternatives/moc lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 20 Nov 5 2003 /etc/alternatives/moc - /usr/lib/qt2/bin/moc $ ls -al /usr/lib/qt2/bin/moc ls: /usr/lib/qt2/bin/moc: No such file or directory Unfortunately, update-alternatives seems to be unable to correct this: # update-alternatives --config moc There is only 1 program which provides moc (/usr/bin/moc-qt4). Nothing to configure. Of course, the fix is trivial (manually correct the symlink). I have no idea how this happened, but I surely didn't manually mess with the alternatives. Probably some interesting sequence of installs and uninstalls of different versions of qt. If I'm the only one with this problem, just close the report. So, other people with the same symptoms, please speak up ;) Jan -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (990, 'unstable'), (500, 'oldstable'), (500, 'testing'), (500, 'stable'), (101, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.12 Locale: LANG=C, (charmap=ISO-8859-15) Versions of packages libqt4-dev depends on: ii libaudio-dev 1.7-2 The Network Audio System (NAS). OT: Package stability (was: Re: safe to upgrade sid?)
On Saturday 16 July 2005 21:00, Adeodato Simó wrote: * Anders Breindahl [Sat, 16 Jul 2005 19:37:40 +0200]: It is rather disturbing, that errors in libraries in unstable is not prioritized any higher than the ongoing transitions. Sorry, but if this fuckup has not been fixed already is because it can't be fixed without major pain, due to GCC 4 being the default compiler now. Thanks to those who pointed this out. That had passed my attention. I was merely providing the (thought-up) view of a user, who didn't understand how his or her system broke because of a software update. The frustration is real, but if I worried about stability of packages, I shouldn't have gone with Unstable. I know that fact, but I just didn't know that I worried about the stability of packages. As is, I have become afraid of dist-upgrading: What is going to break this time? And I suppose that I am not the only wannabe-dev, who runs Unstable simply because of the version numbers it supplies. All that is well known. The morale is, that I still shouldn't suggest Unstable to users I help install, and that I really should consider Testing myself. I assume that such ``errors'' as kmail breaking would be considered rather important to fix straightaway, if they should emerge in Testing..? QDVD Author
Hi there, I am wondering if ANYONE has had any luck with making a DVD from the program QDVDAuthor? I am trying to make one of a bunch of video clips that I want to put into a DVD for my parents in Ohio. I am currently running Debian 3.1 0a release with gnome 2.8.3. I know K3B does a GREAT job of making Data DVD's but I don't want that, I want them to select it from a menu screen on what ones they want to view. 'Run Command' problems
Hello all, Since shortly, I get a lot of 'Could not run the specified command' when using the 'Run command' box (ALT-F2). The commands in question are prefectly valid (they work perfectly from an xterm), and it started off recently that it doesn't find half of the commands anymore. Any ideas? Any library that might have been replaced? Jan -- Spelling is a lossed art. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact

Well, if such an error emerged in testing, it would take even longer to fix, as the fix would first have to go through unstable. This is exactly the reason testing is often considered safer in regard to package stability, though - hopefully all errors such as this will turn up in unstable and therefore the broken package will not make it into testing. Could be a different environment, i.e. a different PATH for KDE and the shell inside xterm. This can happen when additional directories are added to PATH in shell config files that are only read by interactive shells such as the one in terminals, but not the shell running startkde. Double Trash Cans???
Attached is a viewing of two Trash icons on my KDE 3.4.1 desktop. Included in the screenshot are different property windows. Can someone please explain this bit of weirdness? Why are there two instead of one? Thanks, Bob -- Chess tonight. double-trash-icons.png Description: PNG image

Yes, I know that.. But I'm just wondering what might have caused the problem, since I haven't changed a thing myself, only the 'usual' upgrades through apt-get. Earlier the 'Run command' box also showed the icon of the program you were (trying to) start, that it has stopped doing too. I guess something broke in unstable ;p but that's to be expected from now and then. Ah well, i'll just keep launching things from the xterm then for now. Sarge install problem
I tried installing Sarge from a DVD to a laptop. As I don't like gdm, I tried replacing it with kdm during the install process. I chose subpixel rendering as recommended by the installer. Now the fonts and sometimes the windows in kdm and in KDE are far too big even though the fonts are set to 10 or 12 points. The fonts in konsole are however fine, everything in gnome is fine, and the system itself seems OK. The screen itself is OK, e.g. the icons, taskbar and background pictures are the correct sizes. KDE is however unusable as only a few words at a time fit on the screen (The huge letters are incidently completely sharp, i.e. not magnified 10 or 12 pt letters). I tried using the KDE control center and xf86config (using vesa) to remedy this without success. I also tried purging and reinstalling both kdem and gdm several times to no avail. Gdm is also too large. One other thing: after 10 minutes or so the USB mouse stops working, may be a unrelated problem. Any ideas how to solve this or should I just try a complete new install at this point? Is there any way to get back to the Debian installer without doing a complete ne install? Using base-config only gives a few of the setting options. Theo Schmidt -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact
