I've tried with the "us" layout and got the same problem.

Yes. And Xkb in KDE is always disabled with me.

Is maybe the "pt" layout broken?

Did you also try to disable KDE's key handling (layout and xkb)?

I can't test that option 'cause I don't have any external keyboard with me.
Perhaps only after tomorrow.

No. Just in KDE. In Gnome, the key behaves just fine.

One more strange discovery:
- when I'm editing some text, if I want to jump between words (using
CRTL_right + left (or right) cursor key) the cursor stays in the same place
blinking (ab)normally.
If I use the Shift key with left (or right) cursor key selecting some text and
start pressing the CONTROL-left key I begin to select word by word, which is
normal. Unpressing the shift key, but still pressing CONTROL_left and left
(or right) cursor key, the CONTROL_left key behaves normally making the
cursor jump to the beginning of the next word which is the expected behavior.
If I release the CONTROL_left key, and press it again, the cursor stays still
again :-(
Seems like the Shift key is responsible for "unblocking" the CONTROL_left key.
Is there any bad configuration in Control Center that I could have made?

/etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc was upgraded. It didn't even ask a question,
presumably because I hadn't touched it.

I am able to login as a new user. On the first try I got a message
"Error while initializing the sound driver
device /dev/dsp can not be opened (permission denied)"

I added the new user to the audio group and logged in again. This
time I didn't get the error. However, no sound is working, and the
problem appears to be below the KDE or arts level. Even with arts
suspended xmms didn't produce any sounds (I also tried to adjust all
the mixer controls).

The only messages from the restart were "shutting down" and "starting up."

I don't need the sound working, though that would be nice. I would
like to be able to login to KDE, however :)

I appreciate your help.

This package is built against kdelibs4c2a (>= 4:3.5.0-1), and I don't want to
install kde from experimental. Does anybody know if there's a package
available for unstable or testing?

Thanks for any hint,
