KDE on AMD64

2006-05-30 Thread Matthias Faulstich
Hello everyone!

I would like to install a 64bit version for AMD of testing/etch debian with
X/KDE.
On most mirror servers, I have tried yet, there was README with an entry like

amd64 is now available on ftp.debian.org

Please use your nearest ftp.debian.org mirror now for the etch or unstable
version of the amd64 port of Debian. The sarge version continues to be
available
from amd64.debian.net and its mirrors until sarge is archived.

This one I found on
ftp://ftp.de.debian.org/debian-amd64/debian/dists/etch
which IS my nearest ftp.debian.org mirror.

My actual etch amd64 installation is from
http://sunsite.informatik.rwth-aachen.de/ftp/pub/Linux/debian/
but there is no X/KDE included.

Does anyone know, where the complete amd64 etch/testing versions are hosted
actually?

Regards
Matthias

Re: no sound after routine upgrade

2006-05-30 Thread Lawrence Williams

Hello,

I had the same problem, but yesterdays libasound2 update fixed the problem.
It wasn't aRts fault, but rather broken sound card detect code I think
(something about cannot open hw:1.. don't recall the exact message.. sorry).
But the new libasound2 in unstable (i386 definitely, maybe other arches are
still awaiting a build??) fixed things here for me. I get sound in Kopete
again :)

Is it safe to upgrade libasound2 yet? Or will it still break arts?

gkrellm knows about KDE sessions. in its configuration, I have in
General, Properties, the 'make gkrellm a dock' checked (approximative
translation from french). this is the sole change I did to make it
restarted.

Autostart gkrellm

2006-05-30 Thread Chris
Hi,

i have a symbolic link gkrellm -> /usr/bin/gkrellm in .kde/Autostart.

It used to start gkrellm maximized (on the desktop) but no longer does so. It
now always starts minimized. Strangely, if I start it from a console it
starts maximized. How can I get it to start maximized from Autostart again.

The quick solution: create a shell script called .Xsession in your home
directory and invoke whatever clients you wish to run when X starts,
e.g.:

#!/bin/sh
xrdb -load $HOME/.Xresources
exec xterm

This script will be run when you do 'startx'.

Or if you just want to launch the X Window System alone, why not run
'X'?

You might also want to look into the alternatives for x-session-manager
and x-window-manager under /etc/alternatives.

Preventing kde to start

2006-05-30 Thread Francesco Pietra
On debian 32 etch/sid I am trying from a few days frustratingly to prevent kde
from starting at the command . I already asked for advice but the
problem was not solved. I am posing the question again because the position
may have been blurred from repeated e-mails.

What I want is the X-system (which is what I normally need in combination with
Open Motif) and the possibility to start kde from only when I need
it.

Today I updated xserver-org. What I have is:
X-Window System version 7.0.0
X Protocol Version 11 Rev 0 Release 7.0

I removed gdm and xdm with command
#apt-get remove gdm kdm xdm

Now the system boots to text but launches both X and, unwillingly,
also kde.

I forgot before the last step to reconfigure; see what happens:

debian:/home/francesco# dpkg -reconfigure kdm
dpkg: conflicting actions --control and --remove

Type dpkg --help for help about installing and deinstalling packages [*];
Use `dselect' or `aptitude' for user-friendly package management;
Type dpkg -Dhelp for a list of dpkg debug flag values;
Type dpkg --force-help for a list of forcing options;
Type dpkg-deb --help for help about manipulating *.deb files;
Type dpkg --license for copyright license and lack of warranty (GNU GPL) [*].

Options marked [*] produce a lot of output - pipe it through `less' or
`more' !
debian:/home/francesco#

I understand that there is a conflict but I am unable to solve it. Help
please.
Thank you
francesco pietra
