Bug#523742: (no subject)

2009-05-18 Thread Julien Goodwin
In the same vein it would be nice for (perhaps optionally) zero's to be
replaced by - which is commonly used by many other systems as a more
visually distinct way of showing zero.

Bug#528754: closed by Sune Vuorela deb...@pusling.com (Re: Bug#528754: kdelibs do not build without avahi)

2009-05-18 Thread bugreporter
I didn't understand, why you closed the bug. Seriously.
Do you have enough expertise to read the mentioned patch file?
(./debian/patches/98_buildprep.diff)
If so, do it. If not, I will try to explain what I am seeing.

So, first, there are the original source package. It builds OK.
There are debianised sources - the added ./debian directory.
That directory contains subdirectory ./patches.
When you build .deb binary packages, you usually run debian/rules
makefile. And it unconditionally applies .diff files from debian/patches
directory (it really doesn't ask you). That's not my modification, that's
Debian's.
This report was about Debian package kdelibs, not upstream's, not my own
version.

What is wrong with Debian's modifications to the package.
It removes (otherwise provided by upstream) the option to build without
some questionable and purely optional feature like dnssd,
that opens additional remote attack vectors, limited to local network.
The files, that come from Debian maintainers (do you represent any of them?),
break configure process if there is no libahavi development files present
on the system.

I have wrote already to the debian desktop mailing list and
was told, that I have a freedom to recompile binary .debs from
sources and without that exactly option.

This report was to inform everyone, that it is no more true for Debian version
of the kdelibs.
The problem is that:
 1. Original upstream version build and work okay.
 2. My modifications to ./debian/patches/98_buildprep.diff (mostly to
./configure part)
allow to build and run kdelibs without avahi dependencies and without dnssd,
that suggests that ./configure script was erroneously broken and without
any cause.
 3.
a) Optional usability feature became core part of the package. Cool, but
not everyone
   will benefit from that feature.
b) That feature contradicts security in some way. Well, that is
questionable, but you know...
c) Sometimes it is safer to be able to exclude unneeded functionality from
applications.
   Sometimes that is REQUIREMENT.
d) The optional security feature of being able to compile out the unneeded
functionality was broken. But there was no real reason for that, except
lack of expertise or mistype or what?..
e) That change makes Debian more favorable for inexperienced OR lame users,
and less favorable for users with special requirements.
Fix that, please.

Steps to reproduce the bug:
  1. apt-get source kdelibs
  2. apt-get build-dep kdelibs
  3. apt-get --purge remove libavahi-client-dev libavahi-common-dev
libavahi-qt3-dev
  4. cd kdelibs-3.5.10.dfsg.1
  5. debian/rules binary

The mentioned version will not even start to compile here.

2009-05-18 Thread Jordan Manolov
Package: akregator

After fetching feeds - about 75-100 - and marking them as read,

Bug#528754: closed by Sune Vuorela deb...@pusling.com (Re: Bug#528754: kdelibs do not build without avahi)

On Mon, 18 May 09 15:18, bugrepor...@udmvt.ru wrote:

Do you expect random people to close random bugreports?

I have wrote already to the debian desktop mailing list and
was told, that I have a freedom to recompile binary .debs from
sources and without that exactly option.

This report was to inform everyone, that it is no more true for Debian version
 of the kdelibs.

We do officially not support any kind of changes to the Debian packages
in the archive. I'm sorry, but if you change a Debian source package and it
does not work afterwards, you are on your own. You could use the sources
provided by upstream e.g.
Debian is not Gentoo. We do not support enabling/disabling random
features by recompiling.
Debian is all about the binary packages and unchanged source packages.

And anyway: KDE 3 is dead. There will be no uploads which do not fix
RC-Bugs. If we consider this to be a bug (and we don't), it changes nothing,
because it is definitely not RC and will therefore not be fixed.

Friendly,
Armin

Yakuake not working with KDE 4.2.2

2009-05-18 Thread Sergio Padrino

Hi

I've just updated my KDE to 4.2.2 (I'm using Debian Testing) and now Yakuake
doesn't work. When I run it from a terminal, I get this output:

ser...@debian-kde4:~$ yakuake
kbuildsycoca running...
DCOP aborting (delayed) call from 'anonymous-3143' to 'yakuake'
KCrash: Application 'yakuake' crashing...
Could not find 'drkonqi' executable.
KCrash cannot reach kdeinit, launching directly.

I think that's happening because Yakuake 2.8.1 (version from testing) was
written for KDE3. Last version of Yakuake is 2.9.5:
http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=29153

BTW, sorry about the little off-topic, but is there any way to inform
package mantainers about new versions of some packages?

Thank you in advance :)

When trying to install it with aptitude it tried to install various kde3

Or is that just paranoia on my side?

I also found the download on the kde-look.org with instructions to compile it

Adding emoticons to KDE4

2009-05-18 Thread didi.debian
How can I add my own emoticons to KDE4?

When trying to add an icon to the default emoticons theme (kde4), it fails
telling that /usr/share/emoticons/kde/ is unwritable, which is correct, only
root can do that.
When trying to start settingsmanager as root (kdesu systemsettings) it starts
the System Settings as root. But when you try to browse to the icon to add, it
tries to start the file-browser dialog, but I get consistently the error msg
Could not start process Cannot talk to klauncher: The name org.kde.klauncher
was not provided by any .service files.
When trying to type the full path in the Name part of that dialog I get The
specified folder does not exist or was not readable.

So I tried to do it another way (as normal user), creating my own theme, by
clicking New Theme I then get a dialog screen asking me for the name and
after that for the type of emoticon them. I select Kde Emoticons Theme,
press OK ... and then ... nothing.

I then edited (as root) the emoticons.xml file in the before mentioned location
and then it showed up in the emoticons list. But when I typed the shortcut I
assigned to it, I saw the shortcut, but not the image linked to it (it was a
gif file, while the rest were pngs if that's relevant).

So, what's the procedure to add your own emoticons to either an existing theme
or create your own theme?

Another related question: Will it send your custom emoticon to the person
you're chatting with (Kopete using MSN protocol)?
Or will they only see the shortcut text?

TIA

Akregator is not auto-fetching

2009-05-18 Thread B A
Got a little problem with akregator in kde 4.2.2. Its not autofetching. I
have it set for

Show tray icon
Use interval fetching
Fetch feeds every 30 minutes
Fetch all feeds on startup
Use the browser cache

I've tried various combinations of these and the other General settings, and
I still cannot get it to fetch on its own. I also had kde 4.2.2 on my laptop
before I turned it in, and it was fetching fine.

Any ideas?
