gwenview 24.08.1 is compiling and working fine
With the (now fixed) problem on dolphin that was initially pointing to baloo (but missing kio extra was the real culprit), I removed kf5 baloo components and this removed (unfortunately) gwenview that is still the kf5 version. This has for long been my default image viewer and I missed it. I took the debian directory from 23.04.2 source package copied it to 24.08.1 uptsream tar ball and changed only kf5 to kf6 in debian/rules (and the changelog) to generate the correct package version number). Made a "fakeroot make -f debian/rules binary" and after fixing the missing -dev packages, it did build and works. Re: Other issues
* Any time I need to reboot, it's delayed by systemd for 90 seconds while it's waiting for some session to complete? In the past I enabled systemd startup for KDE, not sure if it's related. (I used this to enable it https://blog.davidedmundson.co.uk/blog/plasma-and-the-systemd-startup/) * user level ssh-agent.service isn't kicking in, so I have to every time start it manually with systemctl --user start to be able to use ssh-add. These 2 issues are fixed in plasma-workspace 4:6.1.4-5 that I just uploaded to experimental. We were missing a build-dependency on systemd and it looks like part of the session processes were started with systemd and others not which caused various issues. Re: Re: Dolphin 24.08 on Plasma 6: protocols in kio-extras Qt 5/KF 5 only (was: Re: Some feedback on KDE6 install)
Just upload kio-extras 24.08.0 to experimental as well as an updated version of dolphin that will now recommend kio-extras 24.08 or higher. I hope that solves some of the problems. Yes it does. Dolphin now works correctly. And the thumbnails for wallpapers in systemsettings do also. Good catch Martin and thanks to uploader. -- Eric Valette
Re: Dolphin 24.08 on Plasma 6: protocols in kio-extras Qt 5/KF 5 only (was: Re: Some feedback on KDE6 install)
The other two work, but I do get kf.kio.core: couldn't create worker: "Unknown protocol 'thumbnail'." messages when I run Dolphin from console. Hummm. Maybe this could also explin why we do not get thumbnails for wallpapers in systemsettings also. kio-extras is still 4:23.08.4-2 and only contains Qt 5/KF 5 protocols. In there are all the protocols that Dolphin said were missing above and then some. Wait and see then. Thanks for the hints. Have a nice day, -- Eric Valette

Check if its enabled in Systemsettings / Desktop / Search. If not, enable it and relog into the session. balooctl6 status should show Baloo as running and probably doing some work. KDE6 : ktorrent 24.08 : works correctly while kde5 version is unusable for many users
I already opened a bug on ktorrent, saying its fixed upstream but apparently no one took care to propagate downstream to debian version. When I realized the bug was in libktorrent and still unfixed, I installed transmission-qt that works but I dislike it. Today I took the plunge, motivated but kde6 transition, and tried to see if version 24.08 works. It does work and is easy to compile/install (you also need libktorrent 24.08). I installed it to /usr/local and removed official KDE5 Debian one (well except the libtorrent library that is also using by kget). If someone with KDE6 packaging knowledge can make a .deb version I would appreciate it. I know the focus is not yet on extra packages but still torrent is a good way to share isos. Some feedback on KDE6 install
Hi, First a big thank to everyone involved. It was nearly smooth. I was running unstable + some experimental stuff and did: apt -t experimental install plasma-desktop kgamma digikam frameworkintegration6 powerdevil kscreen libkscreenlocker6 plasma-widgets-addons sddm Everything when well. And I then restarted. sddmd did pop up and I tough it was already fine. However when I logged in, the screen went back, stay so for one minute or so and then I was back to sddm prompt. So I though some pacage where missing and did an experimental upgrade from console login. I saw that some packages like dokphin, kwrite, kgamma, ... were missing and installed them. Just to discover that this did not fix the problem. So I was about to change my session type to fvwm that I keep when kde breaks, just to realize that during sddm upgrade, the session type was not set to plasma-x11. Changing it back to it, made login work successfully. I still have some minor annoyance (my taste): 1) The list of recent element is empty and generates errors on sqlite, 2) When using main menu to shutdown, I had the habit to use sleep instead of shutdown. Now I see only shutdown or cancel. 3) The battery icon is not always displayed. I have to enter the "hidden icons" menu to see it. Found no way to make it stick on menu bar. SOme other icons that I had are still there. Dunno why specifically this one disapperared. I do see the sleep option when I get back to the prompt after letting the PC unused. I can also use a special key. So far so good. Thanks for the good work. -- eric

Re: Re: Plasma 5.23 25th Annivery Release coming to unstable
IME it's *rarely* needed. Normally aptitude safe-upgrade installs and removes packages as needed. I beg to disagree. Here you speak about *aptitude* which is a tool that is not the plain apt tool itself. You could also say things for dselect, synaptic, discover... With apt-get, you have to use dist-upgrade quite often because as other have pointed out, you cannot add or remove packages without dist-upgrade. Clearly to install libkdecorations2-5v5, you will need apt-get dist-upgrade. And the libkdecorations2-5v5 that was wrongly put in experimental does break the unstable version... -- eric

Re: kdeconnect doesn't
I keep reading wonderful things about KDEconnect but I've yet to experience them. My android phones can't see my Debian/Buster desktop and vice versa. Both devices are on the same network and I'm not running an internal firewall on my desktop. I've been trying KDEconnect intermittently for many months, during which time I've had a couple different Android phones, but have yet to have any success. I have no indication of any other network issues on my home network. Both IP addresses (phone & desktop) are assigned via DHCP, which is probably about as normal as you can get. Manually adding the desktop's current IP address to the phone app doesn't help either. Any ideas? I already reported this bug , even upstream >, even on the kdeconnect dev mailing list. Ktorrent no more installable. Rebuild with qt 4.7.1?
Hi, I upgraded the packages but do miss ktorrent. I also have seen no update although qt 4.7.1 has been released. Side question; the kde plasma icons are black and white (e.g kmix, krandrtray), while other (non kde) are still coloured. Is this normal? On one machine I have a systematic crash that prevent shutdown in policykit (bus error). -- eric
