It is perfectly usable, I have also used it for 6 years (POP3 and IMAP),

problems on unreliable connections, but come on, it is a pretty nice mail
client, restarting it usually solves most issues. If you hate kmail,
switch to something else. Plain simple.

I can only second that, I used Kmail for nearly a decade too. And I think
its perfectly usable, too. I had only a few minor crashes.
And I had only minor crashes, if any, in the kde4 KMail, too. I especially
didnt lose any Mail since kde4 and Im using it since its introduction in
 kde 4.1 (I think).

kmail is usable and its integration in kontact makes it worthwile for me to
live with some minor issues for now:
kmail stalls quite often (sometimes only kmail, sometimes the system for ~ 10
sec.) when moving/deleting mails, even crashes on me sometimes when deleting
group of mails. i have not checked yet if these issues are fixed in 4.2.3

It works here. Maybe you must increase the Maximum file size for
previews (Settings / View Modes / General).

 Cheers,
 André

thanks, increasing size did not do the trick but needed to be done anyways
to get the thumbs i needed to install kdegraphics-strigi-plugins

Your statement is very general.
We at sidux will release KDE4 properly integrated with sidux-2009-02 but if
your complaints are pointed at KDE4 in general, you might want to look at
different desktops. Many people have installed KDE4 to sidux in the past few
days and it is mostly very fine except for a few glitches.
Thanks to debian-kde team for the hard work and an overall good release.

I'm not criticising Sidux. I know it's a great team and a wonderful
distribution. If there is anyway to keep the legacy KDE functionality I
would appreciate it. As I can't myself liking KDE 4.x any more than I like
Gnome. I hope you will be doing an xfce release as well for 2009.02. My
immediate solution was a complete reinstall of 2009.01 in order to continue
using KDE 3.x What I miss most in KDE 4 is a good taskbar, and konqueror
just as it was in 3.x

Of course we will release sidux-2009-02 with xfce as well as with KDE4.
But as far as sidux is concerned KDE3 is dead and gone.

 Hi,

I can only speak behalf of the unofficial backports on debian-desktop.org.

At the moment I will have no intention to backport kaboom.
This is mostly due to the fact that I had yet no time to dig into kaboom
and analyze its procedures during installation and removal.

So I stick to the following for now:
 - My backport is for Lenny only and I definitely want to have a .kde4
 directory.
 - This will allow users to switch back to kde 3.5 without loosing their
data after playing around with kde 4.2.

thanks for your reply.
i think i have not made myself clear.
my quest was if kaboom will be able to switch a kde4 backport to a proper
4.2.2 install in unstable. i guess thats for someone else to clarify.

sorry to say, but it didnt work here on sid.
i have sid, testing and experimental enabled but still not all depends from
your initial 'apt-get install' can be satisfied.

* gstreamer0.10 does not exist, i installed libgstreamer-dev instead
* libexpat-ocaml-dev is not installable:
depends ocaml-nox-3.10.2
depends ocaml-findlib (= 1.1)

ocaml-nox-3.10.2 was installable from testing, ocaml-findlib (= 1.1) would
need etch (oldstable) which i will not add to be able to build kde4.3

I have no idea how crucical libexpat-ocaml-dev is to the process.
