Re: What happened to rekonq?
Diederik de Haas didi.deb...@cknow.org Hi! I just found a website that doesn't display properly in iceweasel, so I wanted to try it with rekonq, only to find it's no longer in the archives. What happened and will rekonq return to the archives? Cheers, Diederik Some time ago it was removed - allegedly - for security reasons with regarding to qtwebkit. See: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=712808 As you can see in the bug report: * The removal wasn't asked by its current maintainer (me) * I tried to stop the removal, but it was removed anyway Furthermore as I explained here and in the other bug report: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=714688#35 There are other browsers which use the qtwebkit (which aren't maintained by me) which weren't removed from debian sid. So I don't buy the it's for security argument. Probably the removal of rekonq has more to do with a group of powerful people trying to make impossible any contribution from me to debian. The same people was responsible (among other things) for the unexplainable disappearing of qt-kde.debian.net several months ago (remember the bunch of mails of people asking how does one install kde 4.10 from experimental?) Also note that I offered myself to package a newer qtwebkit (I have updated it in siduction a few weeks ago) and the reply was: Please refrain from forwarding changes to the pkg-kde team for reasons you are very well aware of. So at this point I have two possible conclusions about that diversity statement[1] which generated some debate in the mailing lists, it's either: a) packaging qtwebkit doesn't count as a contribution which interacts constructively with our community or b) it's the greatest bullshit ever told about debian. I have uploaded it here again a long time ago: http://mentors.debian.net/package/rekonq and made the corresponding RFS (request for sponsoring, the procedure to follow for those who don't have permissions to upload packages to sid). Nobody uploaded it. Also I have been maintaining it in siduction where is up to date. So, if you ask my opinion it's just a shame, but: If you want to use rekonq you can: a) Build it yourself from the mentors package. b) Add to your sources.list the siduction's kdenext repository. c) Switch completely to any debian derivative or just use other distribution. The Debian Qt/KDE team has asked Jose Manuel Santamaria Lema to leave the team because he is a poisonous person to work with. No, I wasn't asked to leave. Since some time ago the debian qt(kde team is nothing but 2 or 3 persons doing the 99% of the work and some kind of council of elders which doesn't do much more than making noise in the IRC and bossing around those who actually do the work. You, and some other members of the council of elders (some of them are just part of the alioth project and barely did anything useful in the latest few years) were hindering my work. Since you were continuously hindering my work, and you still do (see the subtitlecomposer hijacking for example) we had flames very often. I think you did your best to demotivate me in order to leave the team on my own will. And since I didn't leave on my own will you used the flames we had to expell me from the team. Congratulations, because that flames we had were quite useful to your political agenda. You also told me the team would be better without me. Several months later, I wonder what's exactly the improvement. The Diversity Statement luckily isn't inclusive on this point. That's your interpretation of that diversity statement. As we can see, how it works in practice is: people like you are almost free to do whatever they want, including expelling people even if it's at the expense of the quality of the software provided by the project. I have been monitoring what happened after I left and I have seen you did various technical mistakes, for instance the latest uncoordinated transition to kde 4.11, or not uploading virtuoso 6.1.6 along with kde 4.10. That kind of things wouldn't have happened if I were allowed to do my job. So not only the status of kde in debian wasn't improved: it's also slightly worse. At the same time I have been providing various versions of kde in siduction almost the same day of the release, which is an example of what can be done without the burden of the council of elders and some other undesirable things of debian. Bug#643726: Still happening
Hello Brian, brian m. carlson sand...@crustytoothpaste.net Attached is a patch fixing the problem. It is untested, since I don't feel like installing all the dependencies to build kde4libs. You could also just define KDE_NO_DEBUG_OUTPUT, but that might be a bit much. Just as a note, this bug has been present in KDE for at least the last decade. I didn't mean to be so blunt, but as a non-KDE user, it pops up at the most inconvenient times, and it is rather annoying when it does, since it forces me to abandon a terminal that I'm working in, usually with 2 lines of important scrollback. while I'm not part of the Debian Qt/KDE team anymore, I can tell you this patch shouldn't be included because apparently it just silents the debug output of kbuilsycoca4 which doesn't seem very appropiate. However not everything are bad news for you: to fix your problem, you just can execute kdebugdialog and disabled the debug output. Disabling it patching kdelibs like that isn't a good solution because some people needs to inspect the kDebug() output of their programs, besides, as you can see, you can just turn it off. If experimental's prio is = 100 then a full-upgrade does want to upgrade digikam to the 3.0.0 versions and suggest to remove a bunch of other packages because of unresolved dependencies. How does it work in 4.9? I mean, does it load the opengl es compositing automatically if possible? The packages in qt-kde.debian.net and the secondary mirror are just a copy of the experimental packages .Therefore, right now, these packages are as official as the packages in the Debian experimental repository, and you can file bugs against them, it doesn't matter if your apt/aptitude/whatever downloaded the packages from Debian experimental or qt-kde.debian.net. If you file bugs please make sure that you are using the official version; you can easily check this, for instance, with apt-show-versions. Since some packages will need to go trough the NEW queue again for 4.7.4 (at least kdesdk and kde-l10n will do, also kdesdk is failing to build in big endian architectures) we might want to upload some bits of KDE SC uploaded 4.7.4 in the next few days. With regarding to the things that will happen in the next few weeks: We won't upload 4.7.2 to sid. We won't upload 4.7.3 at all. We will upload 4.7.4 to qt-kde.debian.net. KDE SC 4.7 available in qt-kde.debian.net
Hello, KDE Software Compilation 4.7.2 (except kdepim) has been uploaded to http://qt-kde.debian.net/ The secondary mirror qt-kde2.debian.net is temporarily unavailable. Follow instructions on the homepage if you are considering to upgrade or install these packages. Please do *NOT* report bugs in the BTS against these semi-official packages. Use this mailing list or IRC support channel (#debian-...@irc.debian.org) instead. Architectures = In the past, we provided both amd64 and i386 packages in our semi-official repository. This time, we are providing only for amd64 because the developer who was in charge of building for i386 is busy right now. We may or may not provide i386 packages in the future. Why 4.7.2? === We started to work on KDE SC 4.7.x packages a long time ago. While we were working on 4.7.2, KDE SC 4.7.3 was released. With the 4.7.x releases some tarballs released by the KDE developers were split and others were renamed. This produced some extra work for us, including changing some package relationships and adding dummy packages to make the upgrades work. So when 4.7.3 was released we had to choose between spending our time in updating the packages or spending our time in polishing the current package relationships and such. We choose the latter and (hopefully) this will lead to an easy and straightforward upgrade. Also this will make it easier for us to update the packages in the future. KDEPIM 4.7 === While developing the 4.7 packages our fellow developer Eshat Cakar experienced some important problems with kmail. On the other hand, kdepim 4.4.x wasn't tested against 4.7 by upstream KDE developers (unlike what happened with the 4.6.x releases). Therefore, this may raise some new bugs.[1] In hope that we are choosing the lesser of two evils, we are skipping kdepim 4.7 for now. Last but not least, note that kdepim developers work on one of the most dangerous module (this module can chew users' data if there are important bugs) so be patient with them, they deserve our respect. [1] These bugs probably won't be fixed by us, since we hope to provide any kdepim 4.7.x which works better than 4.7.2. Packages renamed Some packages were renamed with this release, you can check them here: http://pkg-kde.alioth.debian.org/kde47.html Also, there are some packages which are dummy packages now and which can be safely removed, you can remove these (in case they aren't already removed by your package manager in the upgrade): * kdebase-runtime-dbg * kdebase-apps * kdebase-workspace * kdebase-wokspace-bin * kdebase-workspace-dev * kdebase-workspace-dbg * kdebase-bin * kdebase-dbg If removing one of the above mentioned packages makes you remove other different packages, probably it's a bug, so please let us know if that happens. However, probably you would not be able to remove (yet) these dummy packages: * kdebase-runtime[1] * kdegraphics-libs-data[2] [1]because a lot of packages still depend on it. This minor problem will be there for a long time until we have no packages depending on kdebase-runtime. [2]because of koffice. Rekonq = rekonq 0.8.0 has been uploaded to qt-kde.debian.net as well. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kde-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Eshat Cakar i...@eshat.de The status is (few) people are working on it, and there's no ETA, so same as /topic in #debian-kde. Please bear with the team, if it is not possible to give an ETA, since it's just a handful of people currently been working on packaging, and we depend on them having the time. This isn't true. The reason for not having an ETA is the nature of the work itself. KDE SC 4.6.3 uploaded to unstable
Hello, yesterday Modestas started to upload our KDE SC 4.6.3 packages to unstable. We recomend to upgrade carefully i.e. pay attention to what apt- get/aptitude/whatever wants to remove. If you have problems, we recommend you to wait until everything is built and available in your local mirror, specially if you are using non amd64 architectures. We are still shipping kdepim and kdepim-runtime 4.4.x. We may or may not provide kdepim 4.6 in experimental in the future. If you have any translations installed, we recomend you to use apt-get dist- upgrade since looks like it acts smarter that aptitude for this concrete upgrade. [1] [1] Details: We moved kdepim translations from kde-l10n-* to src:kdepim, this is suposed to make easier the upgrade to a possible kdepim 4.6 in experimental. Yesterday when we were testing and discussing upgrades I installed all translations and I checked what happens with aptitude dist-upgrade and apt-get dist-upgrade. I'm attaching the results, note how apt-get dist-upgrade comes up with a right solution while with aptitude I had to answer 'n' several times to get something which looks like acceptable (that kde-l10n-* packages were removed in 4.6 iirc). If you have enough spare time, you might want to help in upstream with this problem; if this is the case, ask your coordinator how to proceed. Realizing screenshots is really time consuming and is less useful than translating GUI and Docs, anyhow, now that I only need to maintain documentation, since only small changes are introduced upstream, I will quickly start this work. Thank you for caring :) If every translator is going to localize the screenshots (.png format) of digikam-doc as I hope, then you will face an increase in digikam-doc size. It's just a modest proposal, but what do you think about splitting documentation in single packages like etc. and have digikam-doc as meta-package which installs the proper localized version considering environmental variables? Is it feasible? Well, having a metapackage which installs a localized version depending on env variables is not feasible. Note that none of the debian packages that I know works that way, for instance for kde-l10n-xx you should install just the translations you're interested in. About splitting the package producing digikam-doc-es, digikam-doc-de, digikam- doc-it and so on: yes, it's feasible; however if a new translation appears, the package would need to enter the NEW queue because the new translation would produce a new binary package. It's not good idea to force the people who manage the NEW queue to waste their time, so if it's really neccesary to split the package I would do when the number of translations would be somewhat constant in order to avoid the NEW queue as much as possible. Re: Digikam-doc is old
Hi Valerio, Mark have uploaded an updated digikam-doc to unstable, however note that while your italian *.po files are 100% translated (thank you for your work), there are no localized screenshots for italian, even there are some screenshots from the KDE 3 old days in english. If you have enough spare time, you might want to help in upstream with this problem; if this is the case, ask your coordinator how to proceed. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

By the way, did you realized that the current digikam-doc package doesn't provide showfoto docs? Give us some time to fix it Sorry if you feel that I was putting pressure on you, it was not my intention. I just wanted to discuss about the fact that the package is not complete from a localization POV, and that is not translators' fault as it has been suggested previously. With that Give us some time to fix it I mean that we may take some time to fix it, just to warn you. It wasn't my intention to be rude or something :S Also, this kind of discussions are useful, in fact if you dindn't raised this problem I wouldn't be fixing it. showfoto should be already documented (and translated), it does not have it's own .po file, but topics related to it are inside other files. Thank you for working on a fix. Are you sure? I guess this file includes the showfoto translation... http://websvn.kde.org/trunk/l10n-kde4/it/docmessages/extragear- graphics/showfoto.po?view=log Anyway, we don't care about po files for translations' docs, what I would include in the package would be these dirs (for italian translation): http://websvn.kde.org/trunk/l10n-kde4/it/docs/extragear-graphics/digikam/ http://websvn.kde.org/trunk/l10n-kde4/it/docs/extragear-graphics/showfoto/ which are generated using the po files. At the moment I have some partial work to include digikam doc translations, my wish is to include showfoto docs with its translations as well. What I don't know is how much up to date is the documentation, I'm just packaging what KDE's svn provides, i.e.: http://docs.kde.org/development/en/extragear-graphics/digikam/ http://docs.kde.org/development/en/extragear-graphics/showfoto/ Valerio signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

Hi Pol, with kde 4.2.4 (currently avaliable on debian sid) Plugins - Images - Email images Please, ask this kind of questions in debian-kde mailing list before filing bugs, will save developers time (which will help a lot): http://lists.debian.org/debian-kde/ Cheers. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-qt-kde-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
