troubleshooting kmail

Greetings,

I'm a debian GNU/linux user for quite some time now (decades at least)
and am in general very happy. I've been using claws-mail as an IMAP
client for some time, but recently (a few months ago) I set up Kmail
(and I like it very much, as integration with gnupg was relatively
painless). I am again using it as an IMAP client (with a different gmail
address). I have two computers, both running debian 9 stretch. On one
of them (the laptop), Kmail is functioning properly, but on the desktop
machine which I'm writing from now, incoming email has not been
appearing since the end of January. I don't see any obvious menu
entries which would give me access to log files in order to try to
troubleshoot the problem, so I'm looking for any advice as to how I
might go about correcting the issue so this instance of Kmail can again
receive email (it's possible that the problem is as simple as an
incorrectly entered password). I'm not subscribed to this list, so
CCing me is perfectly fine (though I'll monitor the web archives for
responses on which I may not be CCed).

thanks so very much in advance for any hints,

Re: KMail--Can't Delete Phantom Message(s)

2008-07-23 Thread Charlie
On Thu, 24 Jul 2008, Null engaged keyboard and shared this with us all:
--} Using KMail 3.5.9 from unstable.

--}
--} Is anyone else having this problem? Any suggestions?
--}
--} Thanks.
--}
--}

Usually going into /home/user/.kde/share/apps/kmail/mail and find the
appropriate directory, and delete the email from there will fix the problem.
It happens occasionally but isn't a lot of effort to correct.

Kmail - satellite server error...

2007-08-06 Thread Charlie
Subject copied over to Kmail...

As sent to debian-user list...

Kmail works with the satellite server now? A long online chat and Kmail works
a treat as ever. Phew

Thanks to everyone for your help. It is much appreciated, and by using the
ideas you put forward probably helped to get this working.

Be well,

Interesting, they sent me a message through kmail from their end, and I

If I attempt to send an email to myself, the test of the satellite

This indicates that you could connect to the mail server but he rejected
your mail for some reason. Therefore you should check this out with your
email provider.

The provider couldn't discover why this should happen from my end. They
had no problem sending to me through kmail from their end? They did
describe a different configuration window, so assume they were using
something like Ubuntu rather than Debian. It sounded like a more up to
date kmail.

I have no problem sending through the old dialup provider and have used
Kmail for years. This is a new twist.

I'd assume that your satellite provider is blacklisted somewhere.

Interesting as well? Icedove isn't blacklisted through that provider?
Kmail is?

You may well be right, but why kmail and not Icedove?

Thanks for your suggestions.

The message will stay in the 'outbox' folder until you either fix the
problem (e.g. a broken address) or remove the message from the 'outbox'
folder.

I have no problem sending through the old dialup provider and have used

Am wondering if someone might point me in the direction of a fix?

I googled DCOP for you and tried the commands on my sarge machine, and it would
appear that I don't have DCOP myself.

I am a new Debian user and this might assist you thanks to several people from
the debian-user lists They found what i was missing.

I have had several problems one being that I couldn't connect to local host and
the other being that I couldn't get anything KDE to work when I was connected
to the net through pon

This may not help you, but it could also be a DNS issue I was run through
several procedures but the crux of it was that I had to add to:- /etc/hosts to
read like this. 127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost

That /etc/nsswitch.conf has a line like this:

hosts: files dns

That /etc/network/interfaces by adding these lines:

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

Nothing of mine had anything like this, and maybe that was because DCOP isn't
installed or entered or what. But I am working on looking through this.

So maybe check these things and that might help you as well. But i would also
depend on your firewall. I disabled mine to work through this and then
reenabled it.

Charlie.

default web browser

2003-09-09 Thread charlie derr
I have an install of sid on my laptop (with non-free sources) and the
only software on the machine that doesn't come from .deb files is the
0.2 version of thunderbird (mozilla mail/news client). I do use kde
(straight from sid) and X 4.3 (from Daniel Stone) (though there is
probably a way to solve this problem independent of my particular
desktop environment).

Thunderbird automatically makes a link out of any http[s] url that it
finds in incoming mail, but clicking on it doesn't actually do anything.
I can right click on the link, (and choose Copy Link Location) and
then paste that link into the browser of my choice (mozilla or
konqueror), but this is slightly cumbersome. Does anyone have any
suggestion as to how I might be able to configure something so that when
I left click (or middle click) on the link in my thunderbird mail client
that it would automatically open a new browser (window or tab -- i don't
care which) for either mozilla or konqueror?

thanks so much in advance,
~c

Re: KDE 3.1.1 for woody + updates

2003-03-21 Thread charlie derr
Once again, thank you so much for providing these .deb files, they're
fantastic.

I have gotten into a situation on one machine (which uses all three
source lines: kde X11 and Printing) which I *think* I have traced to an
error in the
http://ktown.kde.org/~nolden/X11/dists/stable/main/binary-i386/Packages
file. The problem seems to be that xlibs-data is listed with Version:
4.3.0-0woody3 when truly there's a 4.3.0-0woody4 deb file available on
the site which should be used instead.

In case i'm completely misdiagnosing the problem, here's the actual
error i get:

debianask:~# apt-get install xlibs
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:
Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies:
 xlibs: Depends: xlibs-data (= 4.3.0-0woody4) but 4.3.0-0woody3 is to
be installed
E: Sorry, broken packages

again, thanks very much for providing these packages, they're quite
a valuable resource for me,

Just guessing: may be you can manage this by adding noatime to the
options of the corresponding entry in /etc/fstab. At least this solved a
similar problem like this for me some time ago.

 I've tried that:
   [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ mount
   /dev/hda6 on / type auto (rw,noatime,errors=remount-ro)
proc on /proc type proc (rw)
 but to no avail.

Any other suggestions as to why it's doing this? Perhaps kded is
 desperately
trying to write to a log or error file? How can I find out?

 Thanks,
 Daniel.

You can always use find. Sign on as root, then run this:

sleep 310; find /var -mount \( -type d -o -type f \) -mmin -5

This will find anything modified in the last 5 minutes on the /var
partition. This should be enough to get you started finding the problem.

Fonts on KDE

2002-11-21 Thread Charlie Reiman
I've got Debian sid (2.4.18 kernel) with kde 2.2.2 installed on my Omnibook
500. I'm having a hard time getting fonts to behave. Is there a decent FAQ
covering font installation? I'd really love something with a troubleshooting
diagram.

I have anti-aliasing working. My problem is KDE itself only seems to
recognize about 10 fonts in the look Feel:Fonts panel (courier 10 pitch,
nimbus, a few others). KDE will render Helvitica but I can't select it in
the picker. KWord also seems to let me select from about 10 different fonts.

This is a KDE problem since gfontsel seems to recognize over 100 fonts,
including my true type fonts, but it has problems with some (not all) 2 byte
fonts. gfontview seems to render everything as long as I point it at the
right directory. Crufty old xfontsel seems to recongnize all my fonts and
renders them just fine.

xlsfonts | wc -l gives 5462, so there are plenty of fonts installed as far
as X is concerned.

How do I get KDE to at least recognize my TT fonts?

Thanks for any help

Charlie.

 Charlie,

It just so happens that I have recently did a fresh install of Debian
Woody, then upgraded to testing and installed the msttcorefonts
package AND ran into the same problem as you! I had a working KDE
system before the re-install, so I had to re-create my previous steps.

As it turned out, all I had to do was modify the /etc/X11/XftConfig file
and add the new Defoma path names to get access to the TrueType fonts
from the status you described. Basically, I had to make the changes
recommended during the x-ttcidfont package config when it was installed!
I also had to start (restart?) the xfs server to read in the new /
 modified file.

 Here is my /etc/X11/XftConfig file:

 # $XFree86: xc/lib/Xft/XftConfig.cpp,v 1.8 2001/11/21 23:41:12
 keithp Exp $

 dir /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1
 # dir /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType
 dir /var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/CID
 dir /var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType

 #
 # alias 'fixed' for 'mono'
 #
 match any family == fixed edit family =+ mono;

 #
 # Check users config file
 #
 includeif ~/.xftconfig

 #
 # Alias between XLFD families and font file family name, prefer local
 # fonts
 #
match any family == charter edit family += bitstream
 charter;
 match any family == bitstream charter edit family =+ charter;

There is some other stuff that you can do with this file to clean up
hinting and aliases, that I have not done here. That is described in
 the /usr/share/doc/anti-aliasing-howto/XftConfig.examples file on your
computer. You might be interested in some of that too..

 HTH,
 -Don Spoon-

Thanks. That stopped the hurting. I'm still not sure why image fonts
(wingdings, etc) don't render correctly but at least I can stop using
bitstream for everything.
