kdm not starting after init level change
[please CC me on replies] Hi, I have a sarge machine with KDE 3.3 installed, and for some reason, kdm doesn't start anymore. It's properly registered as S99 with runlevel 2 (the default), it is the default window manager, and a `set -x` in the init script reveals that start-stop-daemon is being called properly while the script executes. However, when I boot the machine, or change to runlevel 2 (e.g. from single user mode), the script says it started the KDE window manager, but the machine is left with the /bin/login prompt, and neither kdm.log nor XFree86.0.log contain any hint for a problem. The screen also does not turn blank or flicker, so it seems as if kdm simply doesn't start. It seems that sometimes the machine just sits and waits for a keypress, then suddenly starts kdm. However, this is not reproducible at will, happens randomly it seems. Curiously, running the init script by hand after the boot works alright. I've attached a tarball of four strace scripts after putting an strace -ff -F in front of the init script start-stop-daemon call for kdm. I can't make sense of it, but maybe it helps. how to enable antialiasing?
[please CC me on replies] Generally, Debian's KDE works out of the box with respect to antialiasing. However, every now and then we install a box and get jaggy fonts. I cannot find out where the problem is. All machines have fontconfig installed and bitmap fonts enabled, as well as autohinting and subpixel rendering on the ones with LCD displays. All machines have xfonts-konsole installed, and `fc-cache -f` was run after the installation of xfonts-konsole. All machines have X configured correctly. For instance, Firefox uses antialiasing properly. Fluxbox also works fine, so it's just KDE. Enabling Antialiasing in kcontrol/Appearance/Fonts does not make a difference. I am at a loss and would appreciate any hints! -- Please do not send copies of list mail to me; I read the list! .''`. martin f. krafft <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> : :' :proud Debian developer, admin, user, and author `. `'` `- Debian - when you have better things to do than fixing a system Invalid/expired PGP subkeys? setting KDEDIRS
[please CC me on replies] I am trying to figure out how to best set KDEDIRS for Debian's KDE. I tried pam_env and the kdm init.d script, but as soon as startkde is called, the environment is cleaned and I can't figure out where or how. So the only way to set $KDEDIRS for startkde is to modify /usr/bin/startkde directly, which is horrible. Am I overseeing something? problems with nsswitch.conf and KDM
[please CC me on replies] We are using LDAP to manage our cluster and have modified the /etc/nsswitch.conf file accordingly. 3.2.1 weirdnesses
I just upgraded a system to KDE 3.2.1-1 and am experiencing some weirdness. Most prominent: startkde seems not to be called after logging in through kdm. All I get is a konsole, and the desktop does not appear until I execute ksmserver on that konsole. The same happens when I use startx without kdm. Second, the kdm login screen is missing the items next to the users. Is this intentional? I am downgrading to 3.1.5 where everything works for now. Should I file a bug?
