Until gcc 3.2 came along building the Java bits with gcj was not an option. Now we have gcc 3.3 it is a real option, but it will require some work to convert from using the Sun compiler and run time (which of course are non-free and non-open-source) to using gcj. If someone has a working source deb for the Sun compiler and run time I am happy to give it a go to convert the Java bits to gcj. I talked to Ralf about this before 3.1 made it into unstable, but then he could not even get the Sun version from upstream to build properly. David
