Debian & KDE users FAQ V-0.1

Jaime Robles ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
Begin 27/Jan/2001

This FAQ comes from the Debian & KDE user list: "debian-kde@lists.debian.org"

0.-Question: Where can I find the last version of this FAQ?
   Answer: 27 Jan 2001
You can find it in http://kde.tdyc.com

1.-Q: Is there a list for KDE & Debian users?
   A: 27 Jan 2001
Yes, the email address is: debian-kde@lists.debian.org

2.-Q: How can I subscribe the  "debian-kde@lists.debian.org"
   A: 27 Jan 2001
Send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the subject "subscribe".

3.-Q: Where are the Release schedules?

4.-Q: Is there any web for KDE & Debian?
   A: 27 Jan 2001
Please try http://kde.tdyc.com

5.-Q: What's avail and what's not?

6.-Q: How do I install it...I can't find a package called "kde"?
   A: 27 Jan 2001
Go to http://kde.tdyc.com/  find a mirror close to you...throw that apt line in...apt-get install task-kde
if you want 2.1 beta packages you need to add a "beta" to the end of the apt line.

7.-Q: What is the proper line to add to /etc/apt/sources.list?

8.-Q: BTW, what is this 'sources.list'?

9.-Q: Where do I go for non-Debian specific info about KDE?

10.-Q: How do I know if I should ask here, or kde.org?

11.-Q: What are the differences between Debian KDE and other(RedHat) KDE?

12.-Q: Where can I download a KDevelop .deb?
A: 27 Jan 2001
Try in http://people.debian.org/~rkrusty/ and also in
http://kde.tdyc.com/debian/dists/potato/beta/binary-i386

13.-Q: What are the packages installed by task-kde and what are the others
I have to install one by one.?
A: 27 Jan 2001
For offline viewing do "apt-get update", then use dselect, console-apt, aptitude, etc.
Online, use http://www.debian.org/Packages to see what is available, then either download and do "dpkg -i ..."
or use "apt-get ...

14.-Q: How to install one package at a time as well as with task-kde
(it can be easier if you have a slow or time limited connection).

15.-Q: Who do I report what bugs to?

Ok, you mean (if i have taken the idea) to tell in FAQ that it is not
the place for KDE "specific" (i do not know if that word exists in
English) nor Debian questions... I like your idea.
I added your last questions, many thanks!

Perhaps also a question like how do i get anti-aliased fonts to work in kde?
and, Who do i report what bugs to? - cos some people think that kde-bugs
come in here when i don't think they should.

KDE2 in potato vs. unstable/testing (was Re: Debian-KDE FAQ...)

Do you guys have a question for the difference between getting KDE2
from kde.tdyc.com for potato and just getting KDE2 from debian.org
for unstable? Will the potato one be less current? Or will they always
be about the same? I'm having trouble with unstable/testing and have
decided that I want to do a lot of KDE2 bug reporting, so I'm considering
going to Debian potato and getting KDE2 from kde.tdyc.com . So is
there actually much of a difference in terms of development time between
the KDE2 in potato and KDE2 in unstable/testing?

I didn't ask myself,I know how to find them-I use apt-cache search ,but
I can see
it as a question and it would be nice to just have the answers instead
of having one do the whole process of search and compare which takes
some time(granted not much).Well IMHO that's what a FAQ is for.I'll post
an answer later today when I get to it.

Thanks anyway.

lemme take a crack at this one...

I would like you to include how to install one package at a time as well as
with task-kde - it can be easier if you have a slow or time limited
connection.

Don't forget,

Where do I go for non-Debian specific info about KDE?
How do I know if I should ask here, or kde.org?
What are the differences between Debian KDE and other(RedHat) KDE? (I.E. file
system differences, config file and documentation locations)

6 -Q: "What is the proper line to add to /etc/apt/sources.list?"
7 -Q: "BTW, what is this 'sources.list'?"

2001-01-27 Thread Jaime Robles
Hello all!

The List FAQ is going to be started so... the first thing is to
decide ALL the questions that the FAQ should try to answer...
Maybe it could start with:

1.-Question: Is there a list for KDE & Debian users?
2.-Q: How can I subscribe the "debian-kde@lists.debian.org"
3.-Q:Where are the Release schedules?
4.-Q: What's avail and what's not?
5.-Q: How do I install it...I can't find a package called "kde"?

Those are only suggestions the main idea, i think shoud be that we
all make the FAQ... so please, reports!
